Prnised Their Conduct The pledge came at the close of a short address by Mr. J. S. Cowper, in which he paid tribute to them (or their exemplary conduct during the dispute with the council and the eoiitr;.ctors. "1 do this," continued the speaker, "because, for ycur own good name and welfare I am anxious that you maintain that standard of respect lor law and order. Will bc Back by Janunry 1st "I am going away to the Klondike in three weeks' time, boys," said another, who is a properly owner in Prince Rupert, "but 1 pledge myself I'll be back hy January 1st if I have to 'mush' all the way from the Klondike bark \\fl Rupert. I'll do it to cast my vote and use my influence, just to show the present council what I think of them." The "Three Criminals" It was stated that the "throe criminals who once got a twenty-day sentence in that city police regulations the preservation of the peace in Prince Rupert. That our streets may not hc stained with the blood of innocent men who have no quarrel with each other, and that the name and honor of Prince Rupert may not be humbled in the eyes of civilized people it is necessary that the public be put in possession of the fact that steps may be taken to prevent Irreparable damage being done. The information is that the City Council have sent for H.M.C.S. Rainbow and a detachment of Militia to quell the imaginery riote and disorders with which it ia repreaented thia city ia, or about to be inflicted. Fortunately the whole proceedings though arrived at at a aecret session of the Council have come to light. The inevitable bloodshed which such a course would prcciptate will not take place. The men at their meeting last night pledged themselves to the maintenance of order after being informed of the Council's action. They took the view that the Council's action might have been prompted by a desire to irritate them to a point where they would cease from their present admirable, peaceable, law-abiding and entirely praiseworthy conduct of the strike. The men will continue to spend their time snagging herring at the wharf, digging for clams at Lighthouse Point, sparring matches at their Hall and in the other innocent and peaceable ways in which they have passed away the time for the last two weeks. They will continue to show the citizens that they are as good citizens as any in this city. At the time of writing it looks as if Canada's Navy is not to be sent to intimidate the workingmen of Prince Rupert in their dispute over the election pledges of the Council. Hill, of the Minnesota state board of health, in an article in the current number of Journal of Home Economics. The answer follows quickly. It is not the germ-laden air, not impure water, not even the public drinking cup, but mother. It will be hard on mother to tell her that baby did not "catch" the whooping cough from brother, but thai she herself gave it to the little one, and harder still to accuse her of being the cause of all children's ailments, especially as she usually sufTers more during a sickness than the patients themselves. The author does admit, it is true, that the spread of infectious disease by mothers is a fault of the head, not the heart, and that there is much excuse for them in a state of society which requires one woman to do for her children "individually and alone that which three women could hardly do well working together"; for which small favor the mother should be properly grateful, though the larger hurt still rankles. The specific cause of all infection, of course, is the transfer of bacteria from a sick person to a well one, and "however the germs leave the sick person, they, practically speaking, never produce another case of the disease, unless a well person gets these discharges into his or her mouth. The mother kisses her baby, or tries the nipple of the nursing bottle to see if it draws well or if the milk is warm enough by- first sucking the nipple herself, and of course her mouth discharges go into the baby's mouth. She feeds the baby with a spoon, and tries the temperature of the spoon and its contents in her own mouth first, or she laughs and talks into the baby's face, cuddling and playing with it. The fine spray from her mouth, thrown out in explosive outrush of air during speech, as it ia not during quiet breathing, flies over the baby's face, into its mouth, eyes and nose, and the baby's into hers. Not until women understand bacteriology will they stop the practices that lead to the transfer of germs. Dr. Hill argues. Only by such study can they be made to realize that to kiss a baby is as wicked, from the point of view of hygiene, as to suck a 5-cent piece. The hatred of visible din fairly common among womenwhich is, says the doctor, probably part of the feminine desire for adornment, must give place to a tolerance of harmless mud and a hatred of invisible germs. smile at the ignorance of the people who were shocked at the sight of the first umbrella used in the London streets, and at the women who, we are told, went into convulsions the first time they saw a man in a top hat. HOMELY RECIPES Doughnuts A reliable recipe calls for one egg beaten with a half cupful of sugar, a quarter of a teaspoonful of salt, a half teaspoonful of gTated nutmeg and cinnamon mixed, a half cupful of milk, one cupful of flour, one heaping teaspoonful of baking powder and enough more flour to just roll out. Cut and fry in deep, smoking hot fat. Rice Pudding For each quart of milk used allow one tablespoonful of washed rice, two tablespoonfuls of sugar imore if liked quite sweet) one teaspoonful of butter and a third of a teaspoonful of salt. When all ingredients are in the baking dish add a little grated nutmeg or a teaspoonful of vannilla and place in a slow oven. When a brown skin forms over the top turn it under a couple of times and then stir carefully without disturbing the top. Allow two hours or more for the baking until the rice is well swollen or about half of the liquid absorbed or evaporated. Then set aside and serve very cold. MRS. CHURCHES ADVERTISED Found that it Increased Their Attendance Fifty Per Cent Shocked the Crowd The harem skirt had appeared on the streets of New York and caused something approaching a riot. A harem skin consists only of an ordinary skin divided below the knee and gathered around the ankles in a ruffle. It must be absolutely modest x a costume. The lady who wore the skirt also wore a long coat, which concealed it almost wholly. Nevertheless she was almost mobbed by a great crowd. And yet we Binghamton, N. Y., March 13.The i churches of this city have just made an unusual demonstration of the value of newspaper advertising. As the re- I suit of an advertising campaign of just one day, an average increase in i the attendance at the church of 6) ' per cent was brought about. The experiment was participated in by all the Protestant churches. The clergy- . men are conducting a special move- ; ment to increase attendance at the services and fill empty pevs. On Sat- urady nearly all the merchants, by agreement, gave up their regular advertising space in the newspapers to the Ministerial Association, which filled the papers with display advertising urging the public to attend church. As a result every church was filled to overflowing yesterday. O. M. Helgerson, Limited, have houses to rent. TRY THE OPTIMIST WANT AD. WAY OF FINDING 53. All the lines between the coast and the Orient will be affected and the rate on flour may bc depressed to $1 a ton. The rate is now $3. BugginsYes, but you should remember there were no apartment houses when the Bible was written. &THE HOUSE OF THE YEARS (Priscilla Leonard, in the New York Outlook) Life's room, in childhood, seems a boundless place, Full of strange corners and adventurous space; Youth finds it wider yet, a home of dreams With shining casementa lit by rainbow- gleams; While ri|>er years bring firelight on the hearth, Content and welcome, love and work and minh, Until the walls draw nearer and more near And age beholds them, suddenly and clear. How small the room and how each thing recalls Some memory that breathes within the walls Here joy stood smiling, garlanded with flowers, Here sorrow sate through long and intimate hours; The mirror's depths glimpse with a shadowy host That waver, melt, and in the dust arc lost; The fire burns low and quivers on the floor Yet, as an unseen hand sets wide the door, Lo through its arch, as thc child, appears The beckoning vision of immortal years. WILL SEE DOWNING STREET 'Frienda of Indiana" not Satisfied With Treatment (Special to the Optimist) Vancouver, March 11.There has been open dissatisfaction expressed over thc result of the interview whieh the "Friends of the Indians" had with Premier McBride over the Indians' claim to lands. Today in an interview appearing in a local paper, Bishop Perrin of Victoria is credited with saying he intends to take thc cause of thc Indians to Downing street officials. He says the Indians in the north are starving and that the claims of the natives are fair. Messrs. Mclnnis & Kelly got a gang of eight men together, and at eight a.m., an attempt waa made to su.rt work in the em opposite thc Central Hotel. One dumping cur was filled with dirt, and the gang were aliout to run it over to the dump when a crowd of about sixty strikers who had hurried to tie scene interfered and prevented lie car from lieing n oved. There was n verbal altercation for a few momenta and the strikers Dually settled the mutter by dumping .If car on the grade. Mr. Mclnnis bin self was on the job, but there was no violence shown bini or any of his worktrs. lhe strikers state that the men who started work did not Understand that a strike was on. They did not wish to scab on their fellow-countrymen, and stippcd work on the situation being explained to them. Two of them joined the P. R. I. A. Messrs. Mclnnis & Ke'.ly appealed for police protection for their workers, but when Sergeant Phillipson arrived thc (rouble was over, und the men had stopped work. All three contractors McMordie, Watson, and Mclnnis & Kelly, have apprtachid the Police Commissioners on the matter of Police protection. Sergeant l'hillipson in his capacity us Acting Chief Comtable states that while he is ready to take Instant action in the event of any violente being shown, he does not think thut anything is to be gained by the dflunstratlon of force meantime. On Messrs. S. H. Watson's cut beyond the junction this morning another Kl ne occurred more humorous than serious. Mr. Watson hud expressed hiir.M-li ready to stun up with uny men who are willing to work at the ,'!7 \\-2 cent rate. Two or three men came forward today, but under the criticism of the strikers which wus expressed in unmistakable terms they all quit except one stubborn old chap who stuck to his spade unllinchingl.V under a strom of comical comments and derision. To be called u scab didn't seim to worry the grluled veteran in the slightest. He shovelled uwuy as if he needed the money, und wheeled his barrow loads of dirt off to the dump unperturbed by the remarks of the strikers thronging around. Standing guard over the solitary worker was a stalwart member of the city police force, armed with a gentle persuader less innocent looking than the toiler's shovel, and on the alert for any sign of interference with the work. One thing was strongly emphasised U| o;-, the strikers, viz., thu they n.usi not touch any tool in the hands of a man working. The penalty for so doing is a long term ol imprisonment. At one moment this morning on Watson's cut it looked like trouble. The strikers gathered around the one worker and the two contractors, und the word "scab" passed. It roused the ire of Harry Watson. A blow might have been stiuck, but Constable Mansell warned both the contractor und the striker against violence, and A. Morse, secretary of the P. R. I. A., advised 'the strikers lo come away dfrom the cut. They tlid so quietly. Mr. Morse continually emphasises the fact that there is no desire whatever on the part of the strikers to resort to violence, though they will certainly tell any men working at the old rale of wages what they think of them.
