A special train carrying 120 Chinese in bond bound east, was just about to start on its journey yesterday when dynamite, with fuse and caps, was discovered in one of the stoves of the colonist cars. A search was immediately made and the stoves in each of the other cars were found similarly tieated. The dynamite and fuse was covered with paper and wood as if arranged for kindling. If the fires had been stated, a terrible wreck and loss of life must have resulted. No trace of the perpetrators of the foul plot has been discovered. couver with water, Minnie Pement of this city, aged 16 years, fell in. Her brother Albeit plunged into the water to rescue her, both were drowned. BY WIRELESS PREMIER LEAVES ON JULY 7th. Sir Wilfrid Laurier Will Visit Prince Rupert About First Week in August. Ottawa, May 16,—Sir Wilfred Laurier, premier of the Dominion, accompanied by Hon. George P. Graham, minister of Railways and Canals.E.M.Macdonald M. P., and Fred Pardee, M. P., will leave Ottawa on July 7th, for a sixty days political tour of western Canada. They will reach the Pacific Coast about the first week in August and address meetings in Victoria, Vancouver and Prince Rupert. SEVEN REASONS WHY MANSON SHOULD BE ELECTED. BECAUSE he has a better knowledge of Prince Rupert's civic affairs than anyone else. BECAUSE his honesty and integity is above reproach. BECAUSE lie thoroughly understands municipal law and systemitiz- ing municipal work. BECAUSE financiers to whom Prince Rupert must go for heavy loans demand a big, clean man who has had experience in handling public funds. BECAUSE he knows where to start and how to start organizing the . civic administration. BECAUSE he has the confidence of the Provincial Government, with whom the city will have considerable important business transactions within the present year. BECAUSE his policy is straightforward, good business and allows no room for juggling. ENGLISH IMMIGRATION. London, May 16,—The question of I English immigration to Canada is | receiving particular attention just now owing to Canada's stipulation that ! assisted emigrants must be willing to i work on land that is a farm. Sir Clement Kinloss Cooke, M. P., chairman of the emigration board is working assiduously 1 to have this restriction removed, be-! lieving that it is depriving the Dominion j ; of many artisans who, though assisted : in their passage to Canada, will eventually prove desirable inhabitants of I that land. "My great desire is to see labour exchanges throughout the British Empire. This will tend to do away with starvation and settle unemployment question. Through these exchanges men would learn where there was a demand for their services and desirable workmen could be assisted." Smoke up, boys! There will be only a few more days of free cigars. The Stork always brings more trouble and expense. Ask a married man. Which of the mayoralty candidates would you name as a trustee of your estate? According to his would-be critics, Morrow's chief fault appears to be his success. Even the Stork buttons were made in Seattle. Vote for Manson and patronize home industry. Speaking of wages—everybody seems to have it mixed up in their political talk. Who is it pays the big wages now ? TELEGRAPHIC BRIEFS. Kansas City, —The jury found Dr. Hyde guilty of murder in the first degree and he was sentenced to the penitentiary for life. Seattle, May 16,—Charles I, an educated monkey valued $10,000 because of earning powers was smothered in a baggage car between here and Portland. Los Angelos, May 16,—An earthquake is reported in several southern Cali- fornian cities. It is the most severe in years. Riverside, Santa Ana report damage. At Santa Maragita a man terrified leaped through the window of a cafe taking sash with him. London, May 16,—Official courtesies having been exchanged, Roosevelt proceeded to Buckingham palace where he viewed the body of the King Edward VII. He then went to Marlborough house where Ambassador Reid presented him to King George. Rich Americans are responsible for the high price of seats along the line march. A rich American purchased a store room from small merchant for $5,000. Others have paid similar prices. Humorous Incident. An amusing incident took place on Saturday evening at the close of the Manson rally. After the National Anthem had been sung,, a man who had just entered the hall stood up on one of the back benches and asked permission to ask a question. Some one said "go ahead" and he then asked in dramatic tones, "Why is it that every blindpig in Prince Rupert is supporting Fred Stork?" As no one volunteered a reply the gentleman in question made his way to the platform and said he would answer the question himself. He said it was because they did not want Manson for mayor, as they were afraid he would soon put an end to their business. There are seventy-five blind pigs in Prince Rupert and I have visited them all during the past few days, and in each of themthe owner is wearing the Stork button." He closed with the prophesy that, if Stork is elected, that that baby—the one that the Stork is carrying suspended from its mouth, or in other words Prince Rupert—would take a fall and when it did it would fall into a hundred and fifty blind pigs, or twice as many as existed at the present time. After these potent remarks, the wanderer strolled out again into the cool night air. PREPARATIONS FOR FUNERAL. London, May 16,—Whole court and all London is absorbed in the preparations for the burial of King Edward VII, which will be the most imposing ceremonial Great Britain's capital has ever witnessed. The city will have the appearance of an invested town for two days. It is said that 700,000 people will pass through Westminster hall to look at the coffin. Barriers are being built by means of which the people will be ushered through in four lines at the rate of 18,000 an hour. The body of the late King will not be exposed to view. The mourners will see only the coffin with the official regalia and heaps of flowers. Prices of seats to view the procession are now fabulous. No evidence of Stork having paid more than three dollars a day for common labour has been obtainable up to date. Pat Daly says that the three dollar a day minimum wage which the platform offers is not enough. Well, a hard working man like Pat ought to know. Maybe it is none of our business but we have a curiosity to know which of the Stork ticket candidates is going to get the knife in order to take in Pattullo. SCOTCH LASSES FOR THE WEST. Winnipeg, May 16,—Sixty Scotch lassies passed here to-day en route to Vancouver, where they have been secured situations as domestics by the Salvation Army. It is said that cupid awaits them in the coast city, and the supply will have to be replenished veiy soon. The "as soon as possible" candidates | will probably realize that the electors I have taken their platform at its real value and supported it "in so far as it is consistent " with good government. A candidate at the rally in the Theatre Saturday evening accused the Manson division with being led by a man with brains. So far as we have learned, no counter charge has been laid against the Stork ticket. ANOTHER LIBERAL UNSEATED. London, May 16,— Capt. Hon F. Grest, the Liberal member of parliament for Poole division of Dorset has been unseated. Bribery and corruption was proven on an extensive and surprising scale. Sailings for the Week. i From the South: City of Seattle on Friday, Camosun from Vancouver on Friday, Humboldt I from Seattle on Sunday. For the South. Humboldt leaves for Seattle on Tuesday, Camosun for Vancouver on Sunday. The "personal devil" who hangs round this office and draws a weekly | pay envelope says that Stork may be alright at nursing babies, but if he had to deliver the Optimist route No. 2 every night, he would find out that this city is no kid. BROTHER AND SISTER DROWNED. Vancouver, May 16,—On Sunday, while picnicking on the banks of the Capilano river, which supplies Van- T Bradstreet's representative Mr. Dob- son, of Vancouver, is in the city, rearranging the rating of the business people. Many changes will be made which will greatly improve the credit of the citizens. William Manson committee rooms were again crowded on Saturday night with some of the best people in Rupert. Stirring addresses were delivered by many prominent citizens who are supporting Mr. Manson, and the people's candidate for mayor also addressed the boys, who gave him a rousing reception. The Metlakatla band and Kaufmann's orchestra furnished music. Pattullo, Stork, Dunn and the rest of the critics had an opportunity of running against Manson if they did not approve of sending him to Victoria, and they will have an opportunity again. In the meantime, let us have argument on which is the better man to organize the civic administration of Prince Rupert. HON. BRODEUR BETTER. Ottawa, May 16,—Hon. L. P. Bro- deur to Ottawa after a four month's absence and has resumed charge of his department. He is greatly improved in helth and is steadily gaining in strength. Winnipeg, May 16,—Fire in the warehouse of the Canada Oil Co. Ltd., did $25,000 damage. Two men were seriously burned. THE PRINCE RUPERT OPTIMIST The Prince Rupert Optimist Daily Edition Monday, May 16 A MALICIOUS INSINUATION To-day the official list of voters was turned over by the returning officer to the candidates. It contains 1219 names, with their respective occupations and addi esses. Careful enquiry into the insinuation of the Stork newspaper reveals the fact that the so-called list published was teeming with errors of omission and commission. It seems a representative of the paper was permitted to have possession of the returning officer's register book all day last Monday, and although there were a great many names filed that day, the returning officer delayed putting them in the book in order to let the newspaper representative continue his work. The book, as a public document was open for inspection, but not necessarily to an extent that the officer could not work upon it. As a matter of fact, he labored far into the night in order to enter up all the names filed that day. As a recompense for this accommodation the returning officer is charged with attempting to obstruct the inspection of the books, and an insinuation that he placed on names illegally, or permitted them to be placed on. Only an inexperienced or malicious newspaper man would ever think of putting a hastily copied and unproved list up against an official document. The Optimist believes, that in fairness to a competent, energetic and unbiased official, these facts should be published. Mr. Cuthbert has made a splendid job of both the assessment and the voter's list, and men who know what his work is appreciate it. ILLEGAL DECLARATIONS Those who are taking an active interest in the election have discovered a great many registered who are aliens, or who have not been residents of the city for six months. These persons who thus illegally attempt to get the franchise belong to an element that does not add to the business value, the respectability or the morale of the city. This stealing of the right to vote should not be tolerated, and the time to stop it is now. Taking a false declaration by signing an application before an officer qualified to take them is committing perjury, one of the most serious crimes in Canada, and the severe punishment given for it: would not be unjust to those who would thus aim to defeat the honest opinion of the real electors of Prince Rupert. The Optimist learns that a list of those who are not British subjects, or who have not had the necessary length of residence here has been prepared and they will not only be challenged at the polls, but prosecuted in the courts. Every honest citizen, irrespective of party should assist in this work. Prince Rupert should be cleaned out of those kind of citizens. There may have been a few who took the declaration under influence and the Optimist would not like to see such prosecuted, but they should, in the meantime, request the returning officer to remove ther names. PRODUCTS OF THE FOREST. An Interesting Comparison of Values Produced by the Previnces. The Forestry Branch of the Department of the Interior has just issued its eighth bulletin, entitled "Forest Products of Canada, 190S". This gives the result of the first year s work by the Branch in the collection of statistics regarding the annual production in Canada of lumber, pulpwood, poles and other wood products. The figures have been compiled by Messrs. H.R. MacMillan and G.A. Cutchcs. These statistics have been compiled from answers to circulars sent out by the Branch to manufacturers in the different wood-working industries. While it is not claimed that they are complete yet the figures they give seem to be the mosf comprehensive yet published. The work was new, both to the manu facturers and to the officials of the Forestry Branch, and mistakes have no doubt occurred in it. The work is to be continued, however, and increasing familiarity with the work, both on the part of the manufacturers and on that of of the Branch will doubtless bring about greater accurancy and completeness in the returns. The total value of the production of lumber, lath, shingles, cross-ties, poles and pulpwood during the year was ?67,425,044. The production of sawn lumber is shown by the figures to be in the neighborhood of 3,348,176,000 ft., board measure, per annum, valued at $54,388,036. In this Ontario leads with a production of 1,294,794,000 ft, valued at $24,:i98,077, Quebec being second with 690,136,000 ft. of the value of $10,838,608, and B.C. third, with 647,977,000 ft., worth $9,107,186. The other provinces rank in the following order:- N. B.., :!08,400,000 ft. valued at $4,081,402; N. S., 216,825,000 ft., of value of $2,873,730; Saskatchewan, 91,166,000 ft., valued at $1,576,820; Manitoba, 56,447,000 ft., valued at $867,969; Alberta. 41,382,000 ft., valued at $593,244. The total production of wood pulp is 363,079 tons, made from 482,777 cords of wood and valued at $2,931,653. SHINGLES. B. C. easily leads in the production of shingles, producing 724,652,000 of the value of $1,391,306. Its nearest competitor is Quebec, which produced 406,440,000, valued at $849,787, and then follow, in their order, Ontario, production of 223,533,000 valued at $461,155; N.B., 109,913,000 worth $325,865; N.S., making 33,141,000, valued at $69,370; Manitoba, turning out 1,125,000, worth $3,150, and Saskatchewan, which produces 592,000, valued at $1,363. The total production for the Dominion was 1,499,396,000 shingles, the aggregate value of which was $3,101,996. LATHS. In the manufacture of laths Ontar takes fiist place with 263,241,000 to her credit, valued at $612,856. Little more that number, viz., 138,991,000, is made by her nearest competitor, New Brunswick, the value of whose product is $286,088. Quebec made 92,914,000 laths, worth $189,076; British Columbia 86,862,000, worth $208,255; Nova Scotia 62,688,000, worth $136,893; Saskat- chewan, 18,477,000, valued at $40,173; Manitoba, 7,370,000, at a value of $10,200 and Alberta 1,069,000, worth $3,584. The total number of laths manufactured was 671,562,000, of the value of $1,487,125. RAILWAY TIES. During the year the railways purch- sed 13,!)78,41(> cross-ties for which they paid $5,281,685. Of these the steam railways 47 in number and having a total] of 25,772 miles of track bought 13,738,157, paying therefor $5,189,674, and the electric roads numbering 32 and having 81S miles of track purchased 240,259 ties costing $92,011. Cedar including under this term both the eastern and the western cedars is easily the I favorite wood for ties, twice as many ties being of this species as of any other, while hemlock and tamarack in about equal numbers take next place. POLKS USED. Reports as to the poles purchased were received from 46 telegraph and telephone companies, 151 electric light, power anil railway companies and 19 steam railways owning their pole lines. These represent 66,544 miles of line, supported by 2,433,245 poles. These companies bought a total of 185,807 poles, paying for these, at the point of purchase, $284,549. Of these 185,807 poles 162,211 were of cedar, other woods being used were tamarack, spruce and Douglas fir.. We have a country here in which many good finds j have been made by the few prospectors who have been in the hills, and yet in which there are hundreds of square miles of territory badly in need of good prospectors. Coming up the river by steamer, ninety-one miles from Prince Rupert is the town of Kitsurnkalum, from which there is a wagon road to within a few miles of Kitsurnkalum lake. In vicinity of Kitsurnkalum lake a number of placer claims were discovered last season, and prospecting has proved them very promising. Extensive development work will be done on them this season. In the hills in this vicinity a number of lode claims have been located and worked by the prospectors. One vein is 18 to 20 feet wide, contacting between a slate and quartzite, giving assays from $24 to $55 in gold and silver to the ton; another vein 6 to 7 feet wide gave assays of $7.80 gold, and $11.70 copper per ton, this vein lays in line with porphyritic intusives; a ledge of pure graphite 8 feet wide was also located near the Lake last year. But few prospectors have been in that region, and it should receive considerable attention this year by the incoming prospector. Next stop, ninety-eight miles from Prince Rupert, isCipper City, at head of the CopTViTriTOT. Three miles back of Copper City Jack Nesbit is now opening up a free-milling gold property, on which there are three good leads. Near him Prospector Cody is also working a free milling vein. From Copper City all the why up Dopper river to its head, about a distance of 30 miles, claims showing good values have been located, and good float has been made in many places by the prospectors who could not follow it up without neglecting the claims already held. $20,000 was expended last year on a trail leading from Copper City to the Bulkley valley, and it is reported a like sum will be expended on it this spring, thus it in first class shape for the incoming prospector early in the season. Kitselas is the next stop,104 miles from Prince Rupert. Gold creek flows into the Skeena river at Kitselas, and all the way from the mouth of this creek to its head waters a distance of 18 miles to the east, is a good promising field. A number of claims have already been located along this creek, one property free-milling being only thirty minutes walk from town. The Single hurst mine is two hours walk from town, and the Bums-Ohlson, and Fred Forrest properties are twelve miles. A number of good finds were made last fall near the head of Gold Creek, the leads are reported to be from 60 to lOOfeet wide, giving good assays in gold silver and copper, but the fall snows came a few weeks earlier than usual, and the prospectors were unable to do any extensive work. Considerable work will be under way on these claims early this season. A trail was built up Gold creek a few years ago for a distance of about 12 miles, but after building it with little or no regard to grades, it it was left to fill up by rock slides and grow up with small timber again without any] further attention from the Province. It is reported there is a $10,000 appropriation for the improvement of this trail this season. That amount will do some good, but until the Provincial government opens its eyes to the fact that the Gold Creek is a very promising mineral country that will be more or less neglected or passed up by the incoming prospector if good trails are not given, and makes sufficient appropriation to run a good pack trail Kitselas over to the coal fields now being opened near McDonnel lake, a distance of 28 miles away, we fear it will be a difficult task to induce any number of prospectors to seriously consider a season in the Gold creek country. From Kitselas to Hazelton, a distance of 85 miles by steamer, claims have been located and worked all along the river, but few, if any, prospectors have so far gone more than two or three miles away All the hills east of I Hazelton, on both sides of the Bulkley I river, and up the Telkwa and Morris J rivers, according to the reports from the j few prospectors who have so far worked ! in them, are fairly teeming with rich float, and the area is such that hundreds of prospectors can go there and with good chances of making early and good finds. Gold, silver, lead, copper, plenty of it! | The only thing needed is many good practical and reliable prospectors: the man who knows how to follow it up, and with a record that will inspire the confidence of capital after the find has been made. Big Contract The Brin Furniture company have been successful in tendering for the furnishings in the new 70 room hotel at Stewart. They had to go up against the competition of the largest furniture dealers in Victoria and Vancouver. The contract will amount to between $5000 and $6000 and it calls for the very best in everything. The furniture will be solid oak and mahogany j with brass] beds. They will furnish all i the bed rooms, offices, parlours, sitting rooms, dining room and kitchen. A ! great deal of the furniture will be sent ' from the Prince Rupert stock and the | balance will go direct from the manu- ; facturers and wholesale houses. The I Brin Furniture Co., deserve credit , for thus capturing so large a contract from much larger and longer established houses. famous Gerard-Heinzman pianos. On Saturday no attempt was made to do business in the new store. It was open only for inspection and what made it doubly interesting and inviting was the music that was furnished all day and evening. Moore of Portland, Ore., has decided to join the ranks of the real estate operators, and she is now preparing to leave her native city for Stewart where she willopen an office. There will be some sorry people in Stewart after the sale of lots the latter part of this month. There are only about 250 lots to be sold and at least a thousand people are waiting to bid on them. As a result the prices will advance to such a figure that the ordinary individual will not be able lo touch them. The Brin Furniture Co's new furniture store on Third avenue is now open and ready for business, although nothing like the full stock has been received. Every boat from the south is bringing in more stuff. The opening took place on Saturday and the handsome premises were thronged all day by the citizens. The stock that is now on display made a very favourable impression upon the visitors, all of whom were glad to know that it is no longer necessary to send out of town for really good goods in the house furnishing line. Brins new store contains everything from kitchen chairs to the best rugs, the handsomest furniture and the Purchasing A Watch In a recent advertisement the Waltham Watch Co. say: "If you wish to procure a good watch go to a reliable jeweler." Do not be deluded by mail order houses that buy job lots of inferior movements for their trade. We carry as fine a line of Watches ns any house in the country, and can sell you one at as low a figure as GOOD watches can be sold. Eyery watch that leaves the store is exactly as represented, and you get it in perfect running order. R. W. CAMERON S CO. 2nd Avenue and 6th Street Opp. Theatre CHARITY or BUSINESS — Which? — THE germ of both Life and Fire Insurance had its rise in the custom of taking up a collection for the stricken family. We all chipped in in the hope and expectation that if we were snuffed out by either sickness or accident, the neighbors would do as much for us. Life insurance avoids the uncertainty of leaving things to neighbors. It is a business plan, founded on laws of mathematics and sound economy, to provide for those dependent on us in case of death. Life insurance is no longer a charity, or quasialtruism, any more than fire insurance is. Life insurance is a duty and a privilege. To eliminate the distressing results of death, through insurance, payable to business partners, wife, or children, seems but common prudence. Lord Nelson in his will left his wife and daughter "to the tender care of the British Nation, to which I have given my life." And the wife and daughter gravitated to the Poor House; for what is everybody's business is nobody's business. Don't leave your loved ones to the care of the public or the neighbors. The neighbors may have troubles of their own. Cut out the risk and worry by insuring in the Sun Life of Canada The cost is nominal; the results phenomenal. Let us talk the matter over with you. F. B. NEWTON i' i ■ ,' < THE PRINCE RUPERT OPTIMIST TO THE CITIZENS OF PRINCE RUPERT The Ministerial Association of Prince Rupert extends an earnest invitation to ALL CITIZENS to attend a MEMORIAL SERVICE to be held in the Empress theatre on Friday, May 20, at 2.30 p. m., the day of the funeral of our late Sovereign, King Edward VII. The association suggests that the mayor and council, and various Societies, Orders, Unions, etc., be represented on this memorable occasion. Places will be reserved in the theatre for all such bodies, provided notification be given to the secretary beforehand. F. H. DU VERNET, President. C. F. CONNOR, Secretary. To Buy Right-of-Way. George H. Pope, right-of-way purchasing agent for the G. T. P., whose head office is in Winnipeg, spent the week end in Prince Rupert and while here he called on the Optimist and joined the ever increasing ranks of this paper's readers. . Mr. Pope is here in connection with the purchasing of a few properties not taken over by the Company previously, and also laying out the work for his assistant Mr. Dempsey, who will be here shortly to purchase the right of way for the 13fi miles between Copper Rivet and Aldermere. Mr. Pope has been with the Grand Trunk and the Grand Trunk Pacific for the past twenty-six years, and during that time has purchased a strip across the country from St. Johns to Prince Rupert He has been here six times] the last visit being in September last. He was greatly surprised to see the wonderful progress that had been made here in the way of building and development He could hardly believe it possible. In speaking .of the G. T. P., he was very optimistic and felt sure that trains would be running in and out of here in a very few months. Had it not been for the trouble at Zenardi Rapids bridge, the trains would now be running on the first 100 miles east from here. When asked about the remaining contracts to be let, which will connect Prince Rupert with the east, Mr. Pope said nothing had been done yet, but would be as soon as the surveyors had practically completed their work. poliEe court In the police court Saturday, before Magistrate McMullen, J. Donohue charged Edward Hardy with striking him on the head with a blunt instrument. The affair took place on Comox Ave. After hearing the evidence, the case was dismissed. Are You Here to Save Money?
