The Lieut.-Governorship, the leadership of the Opposition in the British Columbia legislature, a scut jn the Senate-all these, in turn, jt is said, says the Albernja Pioneer News, have been offered to Billy Sloan the man whose "deep sense of responsibility to the province" caused him to make way for Bill Templeman in Comox-Atlin, and yet he remains a private citizen. Perhaps Billy is simply waiting for a change of Provincial Government in the hope of being appointed stipendiary magistrate at Quatsino. The Empire, the pioneer newspaper of Prince Rupert, and pul - lished by John Houston, has changed hands The Empire has been published for over two years and during that time Mr. Houston made a number of friends and some enemies on account of the bold stand he took on many public questions, but he was undoubtedly sincere in his endeavor to have Prince Rupert conducted as a model town. His efforts did not meet with the success he desired and he has decided to move to pastures green. The contestants in the leading events were the crew of the ss. Simpson and the stalwarts of the Canyon, tinder the generalship of Police Officer Collins. The first event was a two mile race, and af- Icr a very exciting contest a prospector at the Canyon won by n Heck. Then came a baseball mutch and both "nines" entered into it With much spirit, but after a very interesting game the Simpson boys proved the best twirlers arid won by a score of 9 to 3. In the evening a return game was played, but the Simpson boys still held the upper hand, though with a reduced score, li to 3; The tug-of-war was the next on the programme, best two pulls out of three, and Officer Collins was the anchor for the Canyon boys, but it was the Simp- Son crew's lucky day and they once more came out victorious. TWISTING THE LION'S TAIL ) Russian Torpedo-boat Fires On British Vessel. A despatch from St. Petersburg says: Firing upon the British steamship Northburg, a torpedo boat accompanying the Czar's yacht Standart to Pitkipas Bay, to meet the 'icrnnin Emperor, injured a British sailor, according to advices received here. The shot was riii'd because the captain commanding the Northburg refused to heed the torpedo boat's warning to stay away from the bay where the Russian and German rulers were to meet. News regarding the firing on the British vessel is censored and but little can be learned of the incident, but rumors which are being circulated here have caused the greatest excitement. According the meagure advices the Northburg was in Waters from Which all foreign vessels had beiyi barred, pending tho meeting of the lnonarclis, when she was encountered by the torpedo boat, which was one of a flotilla accompanying the Standart. The commander of the torpedo boat hailed tlie Northburg and demanded that she leave \\he vicinity at once. No attention Was paid to the command and the War vessel fired on the British ship, hitting a smoke stack and injuring One sailor. 0. SPORT TWENTY MILES TOO LONG FOR ALFRED SHRUBB His Ankle Gives Out It was before a wildly enthusiastic crowd of 12,000 people that Tom Longboat defeated Alfred Shrubb in the twenty-mile race at Hanlon's Point, Toronto. The Englishman quit in the fifteenth mile after limping badly for three laps; he claimed that his old sprained ankle bothered him Longboat jogged the remaining distance and finished in 2:02-10. The track was a quarter mile one. Slfruub set a hot pace at the start and gained half a lap in the third mile, at live miles he led by 100 yards, and by a lap at the seventh mile. At the ninth mile the positions were unchanged. Shrubb sprinted but could not shake off the Indian. Twelve miles saw Shrubb still a lap to the good, but both men were fresh. On the thirteenth mile Shrubb again tried sprinting, but every time he sprinted Longboat did the same. Shrubb began to show signs of distress, but still held the lead, doing the fourteenth mile in 1:18:29. After running the fourteenth mile, Shrubb sprinted, trying to coax Longboat on; then Longboat sprinted and took the lead, gaining half a lap. Shrubb was limping badly, while Longboat was running easy. Shrubb's time for the fifteen miles was 1:25 and Longboat's was 1:26:8. Shrubb was [still limping badly and after going three laps over the fifteen mile quit for good, saying he was unable to go any further owing to an old sprain, Scholes Defeats Desbrisay Nelson, July 3.Lou Scholes, of Toronto, defeated T. 1).
