These records, kept as a matter of routine by the traders of the historic Company throughout the length and breadth of the great fur country, are alluring and suggestive to the student of Canada's history, who frequently finds, enlivening the matter- of-fact daily notes of weather conditions and ordinary happenings at lonely posts and forts, records of incidents and events of far-reaching importance, often unappreciated by the writers. Through the kindnees of J. C. Boyd, manager of the local store of the Hudson's Bay Company, The Herald was given access to the journals of the local post from the year 1885 onward. Exigencies of space will not at present allow reference to many interesting facts contained in the diaries, but as a matter of considerable interest to our readers, we give the names of the white men who wintered at Hazelton in 1885-6. E. C. Stephenson, of Stephenson & Crum, appears on the record as the lay representative of the Church Missionary Society, James May was then, as now, a Tom Creek placer miner; Chas. McKinnon, until recently a resident of Hazelton, was also engaged in placer mining in the Omineca, as was C. W. D. Clifford, ex-M. L. A., now at Kitselas. The others whose names are given were A. Graham, A. McDonald, H. War- burton, C. H. Oren, H. Froats, Fred Harte. In January, 1895, the following record appears: "The following persons are wintering at Hazelton: R. E. Loring, Indian agent, Mrs. Loring and three children, Arthur Hankin ,E. C. Stephenson, James May, C. Rolls, Ezra Evans, W. K. Speer, W. B. Forrest, E. O. DeLong, O. M. Dutton, E. Will- man, George Nash. James Wells, Gabriel La Croix and wife, Joe LeCroix, wife and two children, Master Joe Gardner, J. H. Lyon, H. B. Co., R. S. Sargent, H. B. Co. At Kispiox were Rev. J. C. Spencer and wife; at the mouth of the Haguel-get (Bulk- ley) river, R. H. Cole; four miles below Hazelton, A Mcintosh and family and Wm. Keynton and family; at Old Kitseguecla, Rev. T. Neville; at Kitwangah, Rev. A. E. Price and family. Of some forty persons here in 1895, over twenty are still in the town and district. The construction of roads and trails in every direction is most essential in the opening up and development of the country; so let us hope that our officials shall not become distracted from their duties in this regard by the agitation in Hazelton for that grand highway to Mexico. Interior "News. That the editor of the News utterly fails to catch the spirit of of the times and in nowise represents public opinion at Aider- mere, the place of its publication, is quite apparent from the fact that the petition for a National Highway from Hazelton to the southern boundary of the province was almost unanimously signed by the residents of that town, the editor's name being about the only one missing. Anything which is for the general good of the district must naturally be favored by everyone who expects to remain in it. The narrow spirit which fails to grasp the significance of a thoroughly good road from one end of the district to the other will not be tolerated by Bulkley valley people, who are, almost without exception, a progressive, wide awake lot. The mild form of knocking which the News indulges in is quite harmless and would not be noticed except for the impression that might be created, that there are men in Bulkley valley who do not know a good thing when they see it. On Saturday last a case was tried at the police court which has since caused a good deal of comment. W. J. McAfee, of the Ingineca hotel, appeared on a charge of selling more than a quart of liquor without a wholesale license, and having entered no denial, was fined the maximum penalty. So far as we know this was the first case of the kind ever tried in British Columbia, notwithstanding that, in this district at least, dealers have been in the habit of selling more than one bottle to a customer quite openly. In the circumstances it would have been no more than fair to have notified the local hotel men that the law would be construed to forbid such selling rather than to hale into court, without warning, men who have a large stake in the country and who have never before been charged with any contravention of the law. Mrs. E. H. Hicks Beach as "Sarah" gave a convincing impersonation of the slavey. Miss Sharpe as "Mrs. Pillicoddy" and Mrs. Maitland-Dougal as "Mrs. O'Scuttle" gave a very creditable rendition of their lines and fitted well into the cast. H. Dorrien-Miller in the title role was good and he has evidently had considerable experience on the boards before. He is a comedian of no mean ability. J. H. Hetherington rounded out the cast as "Captain O'Scuttle." very nicely. On the whole the performance was so ably rendered that the audience left very well pleased indeed and it is to be hoped that the same company will have something more to offer before the winter is over. When the new hall is completed and better facilities are available they may well undertake something more ambitious. Preceding the comedy Mrs. Maitland - Dougall very ably rendered a piano solo; H. W. Sharpe sang and five public school pupils went through a musical drill, guided by Miss Sharpe at the piano, so well that they were roundly applauded and an encore demanded. Vera Lee, the small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee, made a decided hit with her singing. William Hammack. October 21, 1910. For Many Reasons We Recommend^= Silver Cup Mines FOR MANY REASONS we recommend the immediate purchase of Silver Cup shares at the present offering of 121-2 cents per share. FIRST AND FOREMOST. We believe the stock will steadily advance on the true merit of the property. We believe in the management of this company. That the safety of the investors' money is absolutely assured--we believe furthermore that there is great value in the property holdings far and above the present selling price of the stock. It is with all these facts in mind that we recommend investment in the "Silver Cup Mines." Believing that the conditions surrounding this enterprise, consisting of a big mining property systematically developed, the management by reliable business men, assuring a clean business administration, offers an opportunity for extraordinary profits to everyone who wishes to share in the profits derived from a succesful and energetic development of a big mining property. Looking months ahead we venture the opinion that SILVER CUP will sell for many times the present price of shares. Our predictions are based upon sound estimates of what may reasonably be expected from a liberal development of the Silver Cup ore bodies. The treasury fund is fast growing into proportions that will enable the company to proceed on a scale that is calculated to add great value to the shares, after this issue is deposed of and as development proceeds there will be a lot of people wanting Silver Cup stock, and to secure it they will be obliged to offer a sufficient profit to the early purchaser to induce him to sell. Why not be one of the early purchasers and thereby secure the stock at a price that will give you the maximun of profit. We have only a limited allotment of shares that we can sell at the special price of 121-2 cents per share. To those interested we suggest immediate action before the issue is fully subscribed. Oct. 30, 1910. John P. Munn. UiE 3MINECA HERALD SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31. 1910. ENORMOUS SUM FOR GOOD ROADS 18,000,000 To Be Spent. Part For Advancing Paific Highway Mark Carr has returned to the Carr ranch at Canyon creek. He will leave in a few days for Quesnel, to pick up some horses left there on a former trip, and to secure some new work stock. Gratification has been felt all all along the coast, a feeling shared in to a great extent on Vancouver island by the vote just passed by the California state legislature permitting a bond issue for a sum of $18,000,- 000 for building new roads in that state. This large expenditure will have an important bearing on the carrying through of the Pacific highway project- namely the building of a continuous trunk road through from Mexico to British Columbia. Speaking of the action of the Californian legislature Mr. A. E. Todd says: ' 'The greatest difficulty which confronted those interested in the Pacific Highway Association was that of getting roads constructed in Northern California. The county system of road building prevails in that state, and in the northern part the settlements are few and far between, and the inhabitants are by no means wealthy. It has been easy up to the present to have roads built in and around such populated and wealthy centres as Los Angeles and San Francisco, but the roads in the less wealthy countries are scarce and in poor condition. Governor Gillett took up the question, and in spite of strong opposition he has succeeded in having the vote carried by a very substantial majority. The result is that roads will now be built in the northern part of the state, and part of the expenditure will be devoted to carrying through the scheme for a continuous trunk road through the state. "The greatest difficulty in the way of this Pacific Trunk highway having been removed, it it now seems almost certain that the project will be carried out, and that the road will be in operation by 1914. Similiarly on the Canadian side, chiefly through the British Columbia government, a continuous road will be in operation between the coast and Lake Superior. As is generally known the Hon. Mr. Taylor has been in communication with the different public works ministers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta, and from each he has received a n endorsation of the scheme. We on the Canadian side are anxious to see this portion of a transcontinental highway an accomplished fact in time for the Winnipeg international exposition of 1914. I personally have been in communication with people in the East, looking towards the carrying of this project still further, so that the highway will ultimately become a transcontinental one, and will be the greatest one in the world. On the American side the people there are anxious to have transpacific trunk road completed in time for the San Francisco and San Diego expositions of 1915. The Canadian and American trunk roads will be linked up, and the amount of wealthy travel which they will bring to this province and Vancouver Island especially can hardly be overestimated. There was a large attendance and the affair was most successful in every respect. The ladies committee, to which credit for the enjoyable entertainment is due, included Mesdames Stephenson, Coyle, Williams, Goodwill, Watchorn, Turner and Simpson. Those taking part in the concert program, which was well received, were: Mrs. Stephenson, Mrs. Williams. Mrs. Simpson, Rev. F.L. Stephenson, and Messrs Springsteen, Higgins and Frank Johnson. The sale of work, which, with the amount realized at the refreshment booths, produced the satisfactory sum of $318, was conducted by the following gentlemen as auctioneers: Roy Williams, Frank Johnson, Wm. Henry and Harry Smith. Considerable amusement was occasioned by the sale of the colt "Wonder" which exhibited the most approved show-ring style. At ten-thirty the crowd in attendance adjourned to the annex of the New Telkwa Hotel, where dancing was the order until the midnight hour. hard shots. As the result shows the teams were about evenly matched. It if annoudced that another game will be played next Monday. Following is the line-up of the teams: G.T.P. C. was contested between teams from the town and the engineering staff of the G. T. P. last Monday at the lake. A large rink has been kept clear all winter. Although snow banks had to serve as barrier walls, making it harder for the players to make a good showing, the play on both sides was very creditable. Grand Trunk scored the first goal shortly before the end of the first half. Hazelton's two came during the latter part of the second half. Ramsay was easily the star of the railway team, a dangerous man at all times, and has evidently played in fast company. A. C. Aldous, cover point for Hazelton, was the most effective for the town team. S. B. Slinger did good work in goal and stopped a number of THE RIVERSIDE ROOMS Mrs. M. A.
