Price are in town. Mrs. Price will remain for tne summer. Miss Kate O'Neil, operator at Meanskinisht,. is visiting Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Cox. Tom and William Carr were arrivals by the Hazelton, after a winter spent on the coast. -J. J. McNeil, of the firm of Broughtbrt & McNeil, Aldermere, is spending a few days in town. Just arrived Dishes, glassware, fresh bananas, yeast cakes, and other goods at C. V. Smith's. James Cronin ot Spokane is having his land in the Bulkley Valley put under fence, a gang of men flow being engaged on the wbrk. James Brewer, one of the locators of the Dibble group of claims in the Babine mountains, came up the river on the Hazel* ton for another season's prospecting ih the district. It is reported from the coast that W. Wjlliscroft is to be in charge of all the government work in this vicinity for the coming summer. He1 may b% expected up the river soon. A few lines of candicjs at C. V. Smith's General Store, Hazelton, are peanut, Ramsay's Chocolates in 1-lb. boxes, Cinnamon Stick Chocolates, Marshmallows, Fig Caramel, Mixed, Sugar Sticks, Licorice, Mints, and Prize Packages. Arthur Skelhorne came near being the victim of a serious accident Wednesday. While on the way to town a large cottonwood tree fell across the road and some of the branches struck his. horse, throwing both horse and rider to the ground. Fortunately nothing more serious resulted than a severe shaking up. James Cronin of Spokane, who holds the bonds on tne Dibble group in the Babine mountains, is coming in this year by way of Ashcroft, bringing some horses with him. In talking to one of the local, mining men recently in Vancouver Mr. Cronin is reported to have said that permanent buildings would be erected this summer and preparations made to continue development work on the claims ' throughout next winter. R. S. Sargent was one the business . men qf Hazelton . who returned from a winter spent at the coast. While at Victoria- he was at the shipyards where the two new river steamers for the G. T. P, and; Foley, Welch & Stewart are being built. Mr. Sargent considers the building of these two new boats at, an expense of nearly $100,000 is the best guarantee possible that work will be undertaken before long on the second hundred miles, as they will be. completed and on the river some time in July. The Skeena and Distributor are able to supply all the camps along the lower river, and there can be no other use for the new ones except to haul'freight va^d supplies for camps to be established along the upper river. For cartridges, all sizes, go to Sargent's. F. L. Charleson, general merchant of Telkwa, arrived in town Thursday evening. Frank Brown of Spokane has returned to the district and will inspect some of the properties on Hudson's Bay mountain1 Quite a crowd witnessed the baseball match between the Aldermere and Telkwa teams, which took place on the Aldermere grounds Sunday. The game was an exciting bne and resulted in a victory for Aldermere. The hotel and store buildings of Broughton & McNeil at Aider- mere have recently been enlarged and thb necessary improvements and alterations made to accommodate the increased volume of business. The buildings now present a very handsome appearance. A party of G.T.P. engineers at the head of which was Charles E. Betts, came up the river on the HaZelton and left the boat a short distance above the1 canyon. They will work along the north side of the river arid it is surmised their work may result in a change of tli'e line1. The proposed trdmway aroiind the Kitselac c'aftyon to avoid the necessity of u&ing teams in transferring freight, seems to be in a fair way of being carried to completion. Engineers have been engaged in surveying the line and work is expected to commence before long. The str. Hazelton, which arrived yesterday, brought the following passengers: A. F. Mr. Carnegie suggests that Great Britain and tne United States Should agree, the latter t6 defend the British possessions ih the Atlantic, including the islands in the south, and the latter to protect the American coast on the Pacific, including Hawaii and the Philippines. Ml- SATURDAY, MAY 15, 1909. Big Profit in Farming;. That farming in the Northerr Interior of British Columbia \\i profitable, ;^)dextremely so, ea; be easily demonstrated by the prices received by the farmers for the crop of last year. Tm pat crop' was a perfect success from every standpoint and thi yield from 60 to 75 bushels to the acre. : Five' cents1 a pound was the going price at the ranch, the purchaser paying the freight. ,The provincial government paid $100 per ton for oats and tnet paid three cents a pound for freight ' Wheat and barley have proved a success. . On oats the rancher can easily clear $100 per acr- when planted on newly cleared land. The cost of clearing land in the valleys has been largely overestimated. Some of the lane1 is open in places and some is brush and small poplars, which can be cleared for from five to fifteen dollars per acre. Besides oats this land will also raise the best of timothy hay, from two to four tons* to the acre according to government reports, a3 it is a natural timothy country. Vegetables are raised with as much success in this country a? in any part of North America. The absence of all pests, such as the Canadian thistle, wild mustard and wild oats, potato bugs and other insects relieves th; farmer of all the dead work spent in fighting weeds and insect pests that are so numerous elsewhere. On account of the great growth pf natural hay throughout th(: country and even extending in the summer time to the tops of the highest mountains, this country is very favorably adapted to dairying. The shipping distance for outside dairy products will always guarantee a good price for all that can be raised. Even in the summer months butter never has sold for less than fifty cents a pound and in the winter when only canned butter is kept the price is $1.25 for a two-pound tin. Some localities are specially adapted to the growing of small fruits and berries apples and other hardy varieties of fruit trees. All that anyone needs in the way of proof of this asser- tion is a visit to anv of the places where these are grown. It, is a continual cause of surprise to new comers wh.! n they first see the enormous yield of berries and small fruits. With a little more time and the establishment of canneries the fruit growing industry will grow into one of first importance. We are all waiting for the railroad, it is true, but the time when the farmer will make the most money for each acre under cultivation is in the next three years, while the G.T.P. is under construction and prices are high, owing to the fact that everything must be shipped via Vancouver Jndthus with the high freight ates prevailing, acts as a protec tive tariff wall for the benefit cf i'.-.e farmer in the Northern In- rerior. Potatoes have always been a success for the past 40 years and 'or the last year have never sold for less than fifty dollars a ton ind the present price locally is ive cents a pound.
