No.~24r NEW HAZELTON, B. C, DECEMBER 13. 1912 EICHT PAGES NEW HAZELTON NEW HAZELTON WINS ANOTHER MERCHANT MAY SOON HAVE LARGE TROM OLD TOWN MODERN HOTEL FIRE INSPECTOR NEW HAZELTON WAS APPOINTED IS T0 HAVE TW0 M0RE WAREHOUSES It was reported on good authority last week that Noel & Rock, men's furnishers, now in the old town, were negotiating for the purchase of the building now occupied by Jack Williams as a restaurant. If the deal goes through, Jack will erect a new place at once on the property adjoining. If the deal does not got through he will shortly put an addition to his present place. His Roof Burned Off About half past eleven on Tuesday night Henry George discovered that his tent shack on Pugsley street was on fire. A hurried investigation disclosed the fact that he would not be able to sleep there much longer j so he turned his attention to sav- ing what property he could. Assistance was soon on the scene also and the fire was extinquished before any damage was done to the interior or the contents. Just the tent roof was lost, but Henry had to seek other quarters for the night. First thing Wednesday morning he started the repairs and now has a roof that will not burn so easily. Installing Machinery Manager Haskins has quite a crew of men employed installing the last of the machinery and equipment for the Silver Standard. It will be a very short time now until everything will be completed and the miners all back to work and in greater numbers too. The ore will be taken out of the mine as fast as the men can get it out and otheis will be driving to open up new veins. This mine alone will make things busy around New Hazelton as every pound of it will be shipped from this point. A movement is now on foot among some well known capitalists to organize a hotel company and to erect an up-to-date hotel in New Hazelton. The movement has every ear mark of success and it is more than probable that within the next week or two announcement will be made to that effect. The structure will be large and modern and the site in view at present is the four lots adjoining the Omineca Herald building on Tenth Ave. New Hazelton will support a big hotel and it is hoped that the construction of it will be undertaken in the very near future. Fix Your Own Road The condition of the road between here and where the G. T. P. dump the passengers and freight off the trains, is so bad that the teamsters and stage men have undertaken to make some repairs. They are putting men on to cut down the rough places and to fill in the ruts. It is indeed a disgrace to the province, and especially the province which does so much boasting about its roads. Back From a Holiday. Engineers E. F. Harlow and Skookum Johnson from the residency beyond Aldermere, who have been spending a couple of weeks in Vancouver and Seattle, have returned as far as Prince Rupert and will be up on Saturday en route to Aldermere. G. C. Hartley Will See That Flues and Chimneys are SafeExtinguishers to be Installed At a meeting of the Citizens' Association Executive last Friday night G. C. Hartley was appointed fire inspector for New Hazelton, his duties to begin at once. Mr. Hartley will make an inspection of all chimneys and flues and instruct the owners how to fix them, if necessary, and to make them as safe as possible against fire. The committee is also ascertaining the number of fire extinquishers that can be placed in town and an order will be sent in at an early date for a large number. It is expected that every one will take from one up of these chemicals and that it will not be necessary to use any other method in inducing the people to protect themselves. There was also some talk of organizing a fire brigade and this matter will come up at a later date. Gordon Wilson returned home Saturday afternoon after a very successful trip into the Babine district where he has large interests in land. This time he was out for other parties and he got what he was after. BORDEN'S NAVAL POLICY TO PLEASE EVERYBODY Canada Pays Specialist in Maritime Defence But Attaches a String to Contribution==Three Dreadnoughts to be Built in EnglandCost Thirty-five Millions Borden's much talked of and speculatively criticized naval policy was announced in the Dominion parliament last week. Here are the main points: Canada will spend $35,000,000 immediately on three dreadnoughts for the British navy. Memorandum from the British government requests for the largest and strongest vessels that money can buy. Canada will be given voice in foreign affairs through the presence of at least one minister in London the year round. Canadians will be given an opportunity to serve as officers and men. The Dominion will be allowed to recall the ships at any time she desires to establish a navy of her own. The ships will be built in England. It would cost $12,000,000 NEW HAZELTON DRAWING ANOTHER FROM OLD HAZELTON SAY APPLICATION HAS BEEN MADE It has been found necessary to erect two more large structures at this point to accommodate the immense plants and stores for the Foley, Welch & Stewart contractors. One was started on the east side of the track, opposite the first big building, on Monday morning. It will be 30x120 feet, and will be used for storing machinery, etc. At present it will cover the plant that was used at mile 88 or thereabouts until it is needed on another bridge. At the far end of the company's siding another storehouse 30x125 feet will be put up immediately. This will give Foley, Welch & Stewart four very large buildings and these may also have to be added to. This will give an idea of the immense amount of supplies required to keep the construction of the railway going, and it will also give an idea of the amount of work that is going on in New Hazelton at the present time. Another old Hazelton merchant has decided to move to the new town, and he is having a local architect prepare plans. Anger, the tailor, announced last week that.as soon as he could complete arrangements he would erect a good sized building and move his tailoring business over. Mr. Anger, like the rest, is going where the crowd goes and where the business is. Finishing His Contract H. L. McHugh is now about completed with his contract at mile 137, or some seven miles from New Hazelton. He expects to have everything cleaned up by the middle of January. If he has not taken another contract before that time he will likely turn all his horses to hauling ore from the Silver Standard mine. In the meantime other teams will be used for that purpose if sufficient snow comes for good sleighing. G.T.P. Official in Prince Rupert Claims Commission is Responsible for Delay in Opening Road Wm. Wark arrived in town j from Aldermere on Tuesday j night and on Wednesday opened j up his stock of jewelry which included many Christmas novelties. Mr. J. B. F. Macdonald who left a year ago last September for a trip to Scotland, has returned as far as Prince Rupert where he is looking up his friends again. He will probably be in New Hazelton net week. extra to build them in Canada. The debate on the issue will start to-day, following the seoond reading of the bill. In the meantime the newspaper criticisms are inclined to be laudatory. The Conservatives believe that Borden has done a masterpiece of j statescraft. He has satisfied the Imperial government who have: been looking for Canada to pay her share ; he has satisfied the I practical Canadians who believe in paying their way but who do not want to see Canada saddled with a navy; he has made it possible for these ships to become the neculous of a navy if Canada decides she wants one; he has arranged that Canadians who have a hankering for blue coats and brass buttons may break into that kind of society. It is, according to Conservatives, the nearest approach to a panacea possible. Replying to an article in last week's Herald, a prominent railway official in Prince Rupert stated that the G.T.P. had made application to the Railway Commission for permission to open the railway to New Hazelton and that they were waiting for the sanction of the commission. The same official stated further that the commissioners' inspector had inspected the grade to South Hazelton at the time the railway was opened to Sealey. It was on this inspection that permission was granted to open to South Hazelton. So much for the railway side of the grievance, but the question naturally arises, "Why was not the grade inspected to New Hazelton at the same time, and why was the application to open to New Hazelton not made and granted at the same time, the road having been ready right through to New Hazelton where the people are located and to which point traffic is directed ? Just where the blame is to be located is not the real concern of the people of New Hazelton. They are merely looking for a square deal from a company of I Q common carriers who are being backed by the credit of the Canadian people. But the fact remains that a rank discrimination is being made in favor of a town- site in which a subsidiary company of the G.T.P. is interested. Annual W. A. Sale The Annual W. A. Sale of Work, refreshments, home made candies, etc., will be held in the Town Hall, Hazelton, on Thursday, Dec. 19. A good musical program will be provided. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission Free. Pertinent Questions and Answers Q. What is the population of New Hazelton ? A. It has a permanent population of three hundred and a floating population of as many more. Q. How many buildings in New Hazelton ? A. At least one hundred and twenty-five. Q. Does the G. T. P. carry passengers to New Hazelton ? If not, why not ? A. Passengers and freight, except for the railway contractors, is not carried to New Hazelton because, it is rumored, some of the G. T. P. R. officials are interested in some land farther down the line that they are trying to boost as a townsite. Q. Where are the passengers and freight put off the trains ? A. Some three miles west of New Hazelton at a point where there is no one living. Q, What accommodation does the railway provide for passengers and freight put off at such a distance from the objective point ? A. Absolutely none. Two box cars serve as a station and the agent's residence. Q. Wrhat do the people do ? A. Either walk or drive to their destination. Q, Is the road completed to New Hazelton ? A. It is, and every train, after unloading three miles down the track, runs on to this town, turns and goes back. Q. Would it cost the G.T.P. any more to carry passengers and freight to New Hazelton ? A. Not a cent, because they have to come here to turn at the only "Y" and to deliver Foley, Welch & Stewart's freight and the laborers for the contractors. Q. Does President Chamberlain know of the existing conditions ? A. He has been given full particulars by the New Hazelton Citizens' Association. Q. Does the Railway Commission know the conditions ? A. They have been given the same information as President Chamberlain and by the same association. Q. Then why does the Railway Commission permit the (band Trunk Pacific Railway, which is subsidized by the Dominion government, to ignore entirely the requirements of the district through which it is building, and to ignore the requirements and requests of the residents of that district ? . ?????? DECEMBER IM. 1912 Water Works System The time has arrived when those interested in the development of New Hazelton and the welfare of this town took into consideration the installation of a water works system, both for local consumption and for fire protection. The town is increasing in size every week and it now has all the ear marks of being a big and a prosperous town. Some time ago the provincial government placed a reserve on certain water courses in this vicinity for use by municipalities as water supplies. One of these creeks is Mission Creek with its headquarters at the hack of the town. Another is Four Mile Creek on the opposite side nf the Bulkley River, but so situated that it can be carried across with a minimum expense. On Four Mile Creek there is a natural site for a reservoir which would provide a gravity flow. Mission Creek can also be brought into town very easily. Water works is one of the most important features in a town and as the provincial government is deeply interested in the real estate of this town, and as the government has on previous occasions advanced money for the installation of such things, it would be a good policy for the Citizens' Association to take the matter up at once and prepare a plan to present to the provincial government before the winter session. If the government will advance the money now then the municipality could take over the liability upon incorporation. No doubt the owners of the townsite will also advance money for this or other necessary improvements. The time is now ripe for the Citizens to get busy. A month or two will be too late. *l* *t* *l* *T* *t* Another week has gone by and there is no word from the G.T.P. to the effect that they will carry passengers and freight to New Hazelton, although for more than a month every train has been run through to this point while passengers walk or drive and the freight is kicked around and finally is hauled up by teams and paid for by the people. The railway commission "is pressing" the railway to extend service for its own benefit as well as for the benefit of the residents. The railway commission has the authority to instruct the railway, and it was appointed by the Dominion government to protect the people against the railways in just such cases as this one. Both the head officials of the railway and the railway commission have the facts before them and the commission allows the railway to do as it pleases. The Herald learns from Ottawa that there will be a slight change in the program recently drawn up by the Marine and Fisheries Department for the management , of the fisheries. Heretofore there has always been dissatisfaction with the department regulations which would not work out practically between the east and west and interior fisheries. It was decided to appoint an ad- visary board having all districts and interests represented. Such a board hasalready been appointed for the Atlantic fisheries but as the B.C. provincial and the Dominion governments are now working in harmony on the fisheries for the first time, it has been decided not to appoint a ; western board just yet. The ad- j visory functions will be left for ; the present with the local mem- i ber and the department inspectors. DECEMBER 13, 1912 r L POULTRY DEPARTMENT *=-___] A Good Example is Contagious You will do a good work if you can raise the standard of poultry keeping in your own neighborhood. It is not hard to do this, for if people see good chickens once, they want some themselves, and this, with a little talking, will soon bring good stock into your neighborhood. This will be profitable to you, if you have eggs or stock for sale, and will lie the means of helping some one in the poultry business. There is money lo be made in poultry, even on a village lot, and the truth of this has been demonstrated time and again. The Need of Patience Patience is a virtue in the poultry business. There are times when everything seems to go wrong and your temper becomes so aroused that you almost forget yourself. Then is the time that you need patience and self control. If you keep a steady head and an even temper you will find that things will go better and without so much discomfort to yourself. Things are not always rosy in poultry work, so keep a stiff upper li)) amid the discouraging parts of the work. Shell Making Material If hens are to lay. they must not only be furnished with proper food for the inside of the eggs, but they must aiso have what is necessary for shell-making. And as shells are largely composed of lime a supply of this must be furnished. Some is found in the grains, but not in sufficient quantities. In extreme cases it may be necessary to use water-slaked ! lime, making it into a putty, and, : when thoroughly dried, reducing it to powder. Ordinarily oyster shells will I answer every purpose; but there is nothing better than old mortar, pounded fine. Hens are very fond of it, and will eat it readily and in large quantities. 1 When possible, it is well to secure a good stock and store it away for future use. Save Only the Best for Breeders Measure the value of your flock by the quality of the individual birds. If here and there you find one that is not as good as the rest, you might better weed them out than to reduce the standard of your flock. Each year if you will carefully cull your flock, you can eliminate the undesirable specimens and retain only those which come up to your ideal. This will mean quality birds and a quality flock. <-. +;- Public Telephone Connection with HAZELTON, SEALEY, NEW HAZKLTON, and the Prominent MINKS Public I'hom'H at Slinger & Ayerde - Hazelton j Polley & Moran, New Hazelton +. K + A.
