HAZELTON, B. C, SATURDAY, MAY 7, 1910. No. /&. KING EDWARD SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS A Sudden Attack of Pneumonia Results In Death of Monarch Friday at Midnight. Mourning is General. ic U If I* b LONDON, MAY 6.-The King died at 11.45 to- night. The members of the Royal Family and the Archbishop of Canterbury were at the bedside. During a brief period of consciousness, just before the end, the King said: Well, 'tis all over; but I think I have done my duty. London, May 7. The King returned from a visit to the continent a few days ago, apparently in the best of health; but contracted a cold, which developed into bronchitis, and, towards the end, into pneumonia. Yesterday morning an operation was considered; but was not carried out, owing to the weak condition of the King's heart. The anxious crowds, waiting in hushed expectancy, were not informed of the King's death until after midnight. The Prince of Wales, according to English law, became King immediately, without ceremony. His first act as King was to notify the Lord Mayor of London of his father's death, the official announcement of the sad event reaching the people through the latter official, in accordance with custom. Great Britain is plunged into mourning. The stock market is in a chaotic condition. Consols have fallen one point. His Majesty was 69 years of age, having been born on November 9, 1841, and succeeded to the throne on January 22, 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria. He will be succeeded by H. R. H. George Frederick Ernest Albert, Prince of Wales, who was born on June 3, 1865. The new King will take take the oath before the Privy Council at two o'clock this afternoon. While it is felt that His Majesty has not the great diplomatic and administrative powers of his illustrious father, the general opinion is that his endeavor will be to continue the dignified and statesmanlike policy of the late King. |lJ0VERNMENT PLACES RESERVE ON VACANT, UNSURVEYED LANDS 1 IN THIS DISTRICT *, Victoria, May 6:Final action ^as taken today by the govern* (lent in placing a reserve on ail acant, unsurveyed lands in oast District, embraced in rang- " 3IV and V. Washingron, May 6:The fate of the Taft regime swings in the balance and the outcome no man can predict. An impasse over the government's railroad bill threatens the existence of the Republican party. The coalition of insurgent Republicans and Democrats has made itself felt. Senator Aldrich has been given the leadership of the new movement and he says any compromise with the insurgents will mean the entire failure of the Taft administration. known passenger sprang overboard. Harry Brew, a sailor who holds The Humane Society's gold medal, sprang in and held the man up until a boat was lowered and rescued them. LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS. Peary Welcomed in London. London, May 6:- Peary delivered an address in Albert Hall last evening, the building being packed. The Royal Geographical Society presented Peary with a special gold medal and welcomed the explorer as the only human being to reach the North Pole. Forged Bills of Lading Shake Liverpool Cotton Market. Liverpool, May 5:The cotton market was severely shaken by the discovery of forged bills of lading amounting from two to five million dollars. Many prominent firms may be involved. Bakers on Strike in Vancouver. Vancouver, May 6:A strike of the journeymen bakers in this city is causing a scarcity of bread. Bakeries are making an effort to supply hotels and restaurants. SILVER CUP INCORPORATES. The Prince Rupert men who control the bond on the Silver Cup group, on Nine Mile mountain, have incorporated a company to take over and develop the property. The capital stock is $1,000,000, in four million 25 cent shares. Fifty thousand shares are being offered to the public at par, and are being eagerly taken, an indication that meritorious properties in this district will not fail of development through lack of public interest. Activity on Nine Mile. Three transactions in Nine Mile claims were made this week. On Monday Frank Brown bought for cash the Skeena claim. Brown and O'Neill gave a bond on the Windstorm and Lottie claims to G. T. Stewart and others. Frank Brown took a bond on the Fraction and made the first payment in cash. A Record Trip. The steamer Port Simpson arrived at Hazelton Thursday evening, three days and fifteen hours from Balmoral cannery on tide water, a record time for the first trip of a season. Aboard were about sixty tons of freight and seventy-two passengers. As usual on first trips most of the passengers were residents of the district returning after a winter spent on the outside and traveling men making Hazelton for spring business. The officers of the Port Simpson are practically the same as last season, consisting of T. J. Jack- man, captain; Richard Dennis- ton, chief engineer; Percy Pat- more, purser; H. Talbot, second engineer; J. Watson, first officer; C. Clunas, second officer;J. Knox, chief steward; and F. Tupper, freight clerk. Heroic Sailor Saves Would be Suicide. P., which has been progressing all winter and spring, is nearly completed as far east on the second section as Morieetown, thirty miles east from here. The clearing was let in small parcels to different gangs of men and some of them will be finished in a few days. Thirty-nine sacks of overdue mail arrived on the Port Simpson.' Mrs, R. F. Leslie and her sister; Miss Light, are leaving for England for the summer. Frank Watson arrived Thursday from an extended trip to Francois lake country. C. B. Wark, jeweler of Prince Rupert, is transacting business in town between boats. R L. Gale, of Gale & Williams, was in town Wednesday attending to the firm's business. William Manson, our representative in the Legislature, will soon pay a visit to this constituency. Duke, Hugh, and Al. Harris have returned from their home in Seattle, where they spent a couple of months. R. E. Williams, the Telkwa land man, and Mrs. Williams, arrived on the Port Simpson. They will leave for their home in the Valley in a day or two. A. R. Macdonald has returned from the coast, accompanied by his brother, John A. Macdonald, who monies from Toronto ta take up his residence in the Francois Lake district. J. C. Boyd left on the steamer Port Simpson for Batemans Landing where Mrs. Boyd was compelled to leave the steamer Hazelton owing to the illness of Master Jack. He will be away about a week. John Piercy, senior partner in the firm of J. Piercy, Morris & Co., of Prince Rupert, first legitimate wholesale house north of Vancouver, came up on the Port Simpson. Mr. Piercy's firm does a large pusiness in this district. The Port Simpson sailed for Prince Rupert at 4:45 P. M. yesterday with the following passengers: F. M. Piper and wife, R. F. Leslie and wife, Miss Light, J. Murphy, M. Murphy, F. S. Clemens, J. Goldsworthy, J. Marshall and others. Hon. Thomas Taylor, Minister of Public Works, is planning a trip through the Central Interior. He will probably reach Hazelton in August or September, and it is expected he will be accompanied by George A. Fraser, a former M. P. P. who is well known to many in this district. James Dyer of Rossland, for many years well known there as a hotel keeper, came up the river on the Port Simpson to look over his mining interests in the district. He has had a representative in these parts for the past two years who has planted stakes on some good property. The local staff of the Hudson's Bay Co. has been augmented by the arrival of C. H. Monday, who takes a place in the store, and J. R. Todd, who will be in charge of the warehouse. The latter is accompanied by his wife. Owing to the continued illness of W. H. Parker, the company's accountant here, an office man has been requisitioned from the Vancouver branch of the company. MOO FEET OF UNDERGROUND WORK DONE GRAND TRUNK COAL PROPERTY DEVELOPED TO THAT EXTENT SINCE LAST FALL The coal properties owned by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway near the town of Telkwa, in the Bulkley valley, have been vigorously developed since work was started last fall and during that time over 1600 feet of underground work, tunneling etc., has been done by the gang under C. E. Betts, superintendent, and J. Goldsworthy, general foreman. Lots of coal was opened up and the properties are looking extremely well. These mines will necessarily be the main dependence of the Grand Trunk Pacific for a long distance to the east and west and, so far as known, is the only coal property owned by the railway company in British Columbia. It is understood that work will be continued until the mines are in shape to produce several hundred tons daily by the time steel is laid to the property. THE POLICE CALENDAR. James May, a young Indian, was fined $20 and" costs for being drunk, and an additional $10 for refusing to give information as to the supplier. He escaped forty days in jail by paying up. Alexander Day, a Haquel-get Indian, was arrested on a charge of theft, a stove and other articles stolen from a tent at Two Mile having been found in his possession. His sentence was two months at hard labor. Robert Killop, drunk and disorderly, was assessed $5 and costs with the alternative of seven days on the woodpile. He paid the fine. Joseph Robertson, Samuel Cecil and Andrew Cecil, Indian deckhands on the Port Simpson, celebrated the arrival of the boat by getting drunk. In court yesterday the two first-named were fined $20 and costs and the latter $10 and costs. Louisa Danes and Kathleen Green, two Kloochmen, were found under the influence of liquor. Louisa had to pay $20 and costs, while Kathleen was fined $15 and costs. Constable C. E. Ellaby, who has been stationed at Kispiox since last fall, has been moved to Andimaul. Frank D. and Carl L. Condit, who spent the winter in Los Angles, returned on the Port Simpson and will leave in a few days for Tom creek, where they will resume operations as soon as the season permits. The boom dam begun last fall will be completed at once. James May , who is interested with the Condit brothers, will not leave Hazelton until the horse trail is open. Broughton & McNeil, who have had a bunch of steers wintering with H. Davis on Buck river, had them taken over to their ranch near Thompson creek, by H. Silverthorne. Joe Hicks, the well known Francois Lake pioneer, passed through the valley the other day on his way to Aldermere and Hazelton. Joe has a host of friends up and down the trail. A postoffice has now been definitely established in the valley. This is a step in the right direction, but it is not sufficient. It is not asking too much, I think, for a mail service twice a month in the summer time at least. A postoffice with a mail service once a month is like mocking us with the shadow but depriving us of the substance. J. F. A. SATURDAY. MAY 7, 1910. NAVIGATION OPENS Another season of navigation has opened for the people of the interior, the twentieth since steamboating commenced on the Skeena and the last in which our freight will be. brought from salt water in river steamers. Another year and railway construction will have advanced to a point where the boats will get their cargo' at the end of the first hundred miles from Prince Rupert. The first boat to reach' Hazelton this year, the Port Simpson, arrived Thursday, nine days earlier than the first' boat last year and ubout the average time for the first boat for the last ten years, indicating that this is about a normal year--neither earlier nor later than the average. From what can be learned it is now evident there will be a demand for at least fifty per cent more general freight this year than last year. To provide this we have an extra steamer, but not yet on the river. The Foley, Welch & Stewart boats will be busy supplying the railway camps along the river and in filling the warehouses at headquarters camp three miles down the Skeena, with goods to be hauled into Bulkley valley next winter. With eight boats on the river and all the freight they can handle this should be the busiest season the Skeena will ever see for steamboating. Hunter, one of the holders of mineral property in the Telkwa mountains, is in Hazelton on business and pleasure. In regard to the district in which he is interested he says there is nothing stirring. He has been holding his claims for five years and when he wanted to sell there were no buyers and he doesn't want to sell now and there are plenty of buyers. The ore on the King is copper- gold and about as high grade as copper can become in any other form than native metal. Values run up to five and six hundred dollars, varying with the gold contents, and the copper being in the form of glance. Mr. Hunter says that the fires of the right of way gangs and the cuts opened on the hills is sufficient evidence that it will not be long before he will be able to ship ore. His property is about ten or twelve miles from the G. T. P. and the town of Telkwa. Hunter was the first prospector to be drawn to the hills along the route of the G. T. P. when the road was announced and ar-; rived in the Telkwa district in the summer of 1905. leprovements at Ingineca. R. J. McAfee have arranged for extensive improvements to the Ingineca hotel with the object of providing increased accommodation for the patrons of that popular hostelry. Particular attention will be paid to the culinary department of the hotel, the plan of the proprietors being to bring the dining room, as well as the bar and hotel proper, up to date in every re.-'pect. As soon as possible a twenty-four hour service will be given in the dining room, an innovation which will be appreciated by the travelling public. Additions to the staff of the hotel are: A. T. McKillop, accountant, and Messrs. McNaughton and Hansen, bartenders. Mr. McDonell will shortly bring his family to Hazelton to reside and will henceforth give his per- j sonal attention to the Ingineca. CHURCH OF ENGLAND Sunday services:-Morning service. 11 a.m. Sunday School 2-15 p.m. Native Service 3-30 p.m. Williscroft Coming. Road Superintendent Williscroft is expected up on the next trip of the Port Simpson. Work on the wagon roads and trails will begin as soon as supplies can be secured. The amount appropriated for Mr. Williscroft's district is $71,000, exclusive of bridge expenditures. This will probably be augmented before the close of the season, as there is a considerable contingent fund, part of which will be called for by this district. Mr. Williscroft will bring his family to Hazelton for the summer. Additional equipment which is being provided for this district includes 2 fine teams of heavy draught horses, which were personally selected by Mr. Williscroft in the coast cities. A. W. Corner, of Kispiox valley, is going in for cabbage this year on a large scale and, we are told, is planting two acres of these vegetables alone. Last year he had some fine specimens a- mong those sold from his place. One sack, sold to the government road gang, held seven heads which totaled eighty pounds and brought $2.40. Lots in Hazelton City Addition are in brisk demand. Harvey & Davis report quite a number of sales during the week, including a lot purchased by J. E. Mar- childen, of Prince Rupert, who will immediately erect a building for a store and restaurant, the stock for which is now on the way from the from the coast. J. M. Adams of Edmonton, a druggist of eighteen years experience, arrived on the Port Simpson on Thursday evening. Yesterday he had a temporary store erected opposite the Ingenica hotel, and today will be open for business with a full stock of drugs, stationery, chocolates and cigars. Mr. Adams' method of doing business indicates sufficient enterprise to guarantee success. A LAMENTAION The followinK lines have been contributed bp a youni* lady of Hazelton. Wcej> 1 Weeji!
