C Vol. 3. No. 28. HAZELTON, B. C, SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 1911. TWELVE PAGES LARGE SUMS FOR PROSPECTS MANY CLAIMS ARE. BONDED IN THE HAZELTON DISTRICT A Review of Mining Transactions During the Past Fifteen Months Following is a list of the properties in Hazelton camp which have been sold on bond within the last fifteen months for the sums of $10,000 or more. Many smaller transactions have been recorded but being in the main for speculative rather than mining purposes are not taken into account. On Nine Mile Mountain Silver Cup, half interest of H. A. Harris in four claims $20,000 Sunrise group of four claims, Rosenthal & Harris to J. Frederick Ritchie and others.... 60,000 Silver Fick, three claims, Dutch Kline to T. L. Carr 45,000 Silver Bell, three claims, S. B. Slinger and others toH. A. Hanson 15,000 McBean & Long, four claims, to Stewart & McHugh 35,000 McBean, Long & Latham, six claims, to Dan Mc- Leod .... 50.000 On Four Mile Hill Erie, one claim, Edward Atridge to E. L. Kin- man 25,000 Dyer - Stephenson, five claims, J. Dyer and T. Stephenson to G. L. Falkner and others... 45,000 Iron Mask, three claims, D. L. Purvis, J. Dyer and T. Stephenson to G. L. Falkner and others 50,000 On Rocher de Boule Mountain Group of seven claims on east side of Juniper creek, W. S. Sargent and Colin Monroe to R. P. Trimble 40,000 Group of four claims on west side of Juniper creek, Sargent and Monroe to R. P. Trimble 25,000 Total amount....$410,000 Substantial payments have been made on all of the properties and one, the Silver Cup, has been fully paid for. The bond on the Sunrise is being taken up a year ahead of time. Add to this the fact that $110,- 000 has been refused by the Harris brothers for the American Boy group of seven claims, the offer being accompanied by a cheque for $10,000, and the fact is apparent that startling progress has been made. The first stake in what may be called Hazelton camp was planted July 16, 1908, and what mining men were in country could not be induced to visit the new prospects that year.' All of the properties are within eight miles in an air line of the main line of the G. T. P. and can be reacned with a wagon road in less than fifteen miles j from the railway. One group of seven claims, the! Lead King, is not enumerated in the above list as it was turned over to a limited liability company for shares. Prospecting the hills in this vicinity has resolved itself into a ' pick and shovel proposition. j Solid rock crops on the surface in | only a few places. More good showings were uncovered in 1910 than in any other year and every one with any knowledge of the country predicts further important discoveries this year. If the ore holds its own with depth there is already enough mineral found to justify one of the best camps that the Province has yet seen. In the Bulkley valley districts the most important transfers of the year were: The King group, bonded to Gale & Williams for a sum in excess of $50,000 and on which development work has, it is reported, shown ore of a net value in excess of the purchase price. The Lakeview group bonded by R. E. Loring and others to Ross Sutherland of Winnipeg for a reported figure of $35,000, the property being located on Hudson Bay mountain. Four groups of claims on Hudson Bay mountain, acquired under bond by R. G. Steele for a total figure of $100,000. Mr. Steele is in London and latest reports indicate that he will be prepared to undertake a strong development campaign with the opening of cpi.ing'i BOND ON SUNRISE TAKEN UP OWNERS HAVE CONFIDENCE IN FUTURE OF PROSPECT Group of Four Claims Cn Nine Mile is Purchased Outright Murder At Kispiox Late Friday afternoon an Indian of the Kispiox tribe came to police headquarters with a tale of murder in which a squaw of his village was a victim. Chief Maitland-Dougall, accompanied by one of his constables and a doctor, left for Kispiox village ac half past nine last night. They returned this morning about ten o'clock with the corpse and eleven Indian prisoners. \\ Shortly after they arrived one of ! the constables arrested a white man, G. Peterson, and lodged him in jail. At the police station little information could be derived. The chief constable was unwilling to admit that it is murder, saying that only a post mortem can detesmine that. However, it is nearly certain there was some sort of a row in which a number of Indians were involved. A keg of rum, nearly full, was found in the houses. All of the men wanted in connection with the case, either as principals or witnesses, are in custody. Deputy Coroner Stephenson is absent from town and the date of the inquest is uncertain. W. H. Larmer, who has been incapacitated by an injury to his foot, is about again. The terms of a deal have been arranged whereby the holders of the bond on the Sunrise group of four claims on Nine Mile mountain obtain a clear title to the property at once from the locators, H. A. Harris and G. A. Rosenthal. Of the fifty-seven thousand dollars still to be paid a large portion is to be paid in cash within a few days. Under the old agreement the final payment would not have been due until January 1, 1912. It is understotd the purchasers will form a limited liability company to work the property. As originally formed the syndicate consisted of about a dozen Prince Rupert men but others have recently been admitted and it is believed that a considerable interest is held by officials of the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co., owning the Trail smelter, the only one treating lead ores in in British Columbia. Among mining men who have visited Nine Mile, the showing of ore is considered one of the best in the district. Several veins have been uncovered and the largest shows thirty inches of solid steel galena where it is uncovered by an open cut. Thirty or forty tons of high grade ore was sacked last summer for shipment but an early fall of snow coming on, pack trains could not cross the summit of the mountain and the shipment will have to wait another season. Great Fire in Cincinnati Cincinnati, Jan. 12:Six firemen were rescued severely injured and se\\eral others are missing in a fire which destroyed the Chamber of Commerce building. The falling roof crashed through five floors and sent a shower of sparks over adjoining business blocks and a very serious conflagration was threatened for a time. The loss is one million. A hundred and fifty leading business men were attending a banquet in the Chamber of Commerce when the fire stalled. All escaped. Terrible Storms on Prairies Winnipeg, Jan. 12:One of the Worst storms in years is raging in the prairie provinces. Railway traffic is almost at a standstill. Country points are threatened with a fuel famine. More snow has fallen than in the four years previous. RUSHING WORK ON G. T. P. rails will be laid to hazelton in 1m11 Night Shifts Are Being Put On In Order to Finish Heavy Cuts Next Summer Bomb Throwers At Work San Francisco, Jan. 12:The Latin quarter was shaken by the explosion of a bomb in front of the Biblo hotel, occupied by Italian fishermen and their families. No one was injured. Toronto Suffers from Cold Toronto, Jan. 12:Throughout the city there is intense suffering from cold. The thermometer is at twenty-nine below with a strong gale. Great Northern Engine '"oes Through Draw Bridge Vancouver, Jan. 12: Just as a Great Northern train approached the False Creek bridge the draw opened for the passage of a tug boat. The engineer set the brakes but the engine broke away j from the tender and plunged into I twenty feet of water, carrying Engineer Baker with it. The fireman jumped. Baker was rescued after swimming a few minutes. MANS0N ELECTED Only One Alderman on the Opposition Ticket Wins Prince Rupert, Jan. 2: Wm. Manson was elected mayor of Prince Rupert in today's election, defeating Mobley by a majority of 102. All the aldermen on the Manson ticket were elected with one exception, Patullo being rejected. A Reprimand for Sims Washington, Jan. 12: President Taft has decided to reprimand Commander Sims, U. S. naval officer for his utterance at a recent dinner given in London by the Lord Mayor. Sims in a speech declared that if Great Britain was ever seriously threatened she could depend on "Every man. every dollar, every drop of blood" in this country. J. B. L. Macdonald, superintendent of construction for Foley, Welch & Stewart, arrived at Sealey on Thursday, from the coast and when interviewed by the Herald confirmed the reports that have been coming up the river for several days that greater activity is prevailing all along the second hundred miles of the G. T. P. railway. Mr. Macdonald said: "We are bringing thirty-five heavy teams from the coast to use in freighting from the end of steel to the bridge camp where the Skeena is to be crossed. The steamer Skeena is being refitted and is to be the first boat up the river in the spring with the air compressing plant which we will need in sinking the caissons. The Skeena will remain at the bridge until the work is completed. No difficulty is expected in getting caissons down early in the spring so that work may go on all summer and the piers be ready as soon as possible." It was learned that night shifts are being put on wherever there appears to be a sign of need in order to get all the heavy cuts done by early summer. The tunnels near Kitselas can be built around with a temporary line so there is nothing standing in the way of the steel reaching this far before the end of 1911. Until recently a shortage of men or supplies held the work back but now everyone connected with railway building at this end of the construction is wearing a smile of satisfaction and good progress is reported from every camp. Mr. Macdonald left for Prince Rupert on Friday. Selous Re-elected in Nelson 1 Nelson, Jan. 13:After the keenest contest in the history of the city, Harold Selous has been re-elected mayor. A Narrow Escape San Francisco, Calif., January 12:Latham, the aviator, had a remarkable escape from death when his machine crashed into a barbed wire fence. The machine was wrecked. Angus McLean came in from the valley on Thursday. J. A. Hodder, of South Bulk- ley, came in on Tuesday, and will leave in a few days for the coast, with the intention of spending the remainder of the winter in Vancouver and the capital. DISASTER AT RUPERT Prince Rupert, Jan. 14: A premature explosion on the G. T. P. within the city limits killed six men. the foreman and three others being blown into the harbor. Entire gang killed except one who is unconscious with fractured skull. James Waybright of Bulkley valley, a patient in the hospital who has been suffering from paralysis for some months, is making good progress toward recovery. Provincial House in Session Victoria, Jan. 14:The legislature is in session. A. Hay- ward, Cowichan, has been appointed deputy speaker. J. P. Shaw, Kamloops, moved the reply to the speech from the throne, seconded by M, Manson, Comox. To Give A Minstrel Show At an enthusiastic meeting held on Wednesday evening, it was decided to give a minstrel show, under the auspices of the Hall Association, in the near future. The first part will be under the direction of Charles O'Neil, an energetic and capable minstrel man, while E. H. Hicks Beach will arrange the afterpart. R. J. McDonell left on Monday for a drive to Telkwa, accompanied by Jack Halley, who will remain in the valley for some weeks. J. C. K. Sealy returned from his ranch on Thursday. He reports the road in good condition, although snow is beginning to drift. Robert White and Joseph Tua had a disagreement on Saturday, as a result both were charged with assault and fined $10 and costs. m THE OMINECA HERALD SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 1911 The Omineca Herald Printed every Saturday at Hazelton, British Columbia. Civil government calls for$4,793,- 511.52. an increase of $209,874. The increases arc in almost every item, although there are three cases of decrease, the only notable one of which is $47,8E0in salaries in the Department of Marine and Fisheries. We assume that is explained by an increase in the Department of Naval Service of $53,150. The Department of the Interior asks for an increase in salaries amounting to $40,912.50 and of $10,000 in contingencies. The Department of Mines is to have an increase in its salary list of $27,300; while the Post Office only asks for $12,320 more. Legislation will require an expenditure of $764,789.50, in addition to $801,600 authorized by statute. Under the heading: "Arts, Agriculture and Statistics" is to be found at item of $2,225,500, which is nearly a 100 per cent increase over last year. This is explained by $950,000 put down for the expense of the Census and by several minor amounts. Pensions call for $251,500.84, of which by far the largest item is pensions forjudges. Militia pensions come to $50,080, the $80 being the last payable on account of the Upper Canada War of 1837-8. The sum of $7,503,350 is asked for the Militia, which is $592,201.18 more than for the previous year. This is made up so far as $330,500 is concerned by votes for buildings and works, none of it being appropriated to British Columbia. Of the remainder of the increase $150,000 is for annual drill, $50,-! 000 for cadet corps and $100,000 for clothing and necessaries. This is the first time an item for cadet corps has appeared in the estimates. The details of this item are: "For pay of instructors, expenses of teachers, qualifying at military schools, equipment for cadets and all contingent expenses." Railways and Canals call for $33,845,573, of which $27, - 000,000 is for the National Transcontinental Railway, $2,000,000 for the Quebec Bridge and something over a million and a half for the Intercolonial Railway. This whole sum is charged to capital, and includes $3,156,700 for canals, much the greater part of which is for construction of the Trent Canal. The cost of administering this department is to be; increased nearly 20 per cent, that is to say, there is this increase in the sums chargeable to the Con-! solidated Fund. Public works come in for $2,763,000 chargeable to capital and $12,856,409.13 chargeable to income. We have already given the items relating to British Columbia, with the ex-> ception of $175,000 fornewdredg-: ing plant and $275,000 for dredging in this province. Altogether for public works in British Columbia the sum of $1,005,000 is asked. Mail Steamers and Subventions call for 51,733,2'!'! and the Lighthouse and Coast Service for $2,679,800, the latter a slight! decrease over the previous year. The British Columbia voU- under these heads show no changes. Such are some of the principal | items in the estimates. The total sum asked from Parliament is $138,863,200.25 of which $28,180, 869.63 is authorized by statute. The increase in the whole estimates is 6,035,575.08 or about four and a half per cent over those of the current year. -Victoria Colonist. The Westholme Lumber Co., Limited. Prince rupert, b. c. Complaint was made of Mr. Harvey that his office stove did not conform to the regulations laid down by the fire wardens for the protection of the town and Harvey was fined six dollars, which he paid. Upon interviewing Mr. Harvey it appears that he has a side of the case. Admitting that he was guilty of not having his stove protected as the fire wardens' rules call for, he claims that the fire wardens were desirous of having someone haled before Magistrate Allison's court as an example for others and he was picked out as being probably as prominent as any, again, he was largely instrumental in starting the movement for the proper protection of stoves and pipes. THE OMINECA HEKALD SATURDAY JANUARY 14, 1911 HORSES CLASSIFIED Substance Of Bulletin From Manitoba Agricultural College The first bulletin to be published by the Manitoba Agricultural College is written by Professor W. H. Peters and is devoted to horses. The classification of horses for market is dealt with in a very instructive manner. The following classification is based on a careful study of the horses that constitute the trade of the dealers in the City of Winnipeg. The draught horse finds his greatest usefulness in our large cities and towns where his business is to deliver heavy loads of merchandise. Efficiency in the collar may be regarded as the safest test of his value, though other qualifications such r.s style, quality and action add to his value for certain purposes. While the heavy horse is usually re garded as a city horse he must be produced on the farm and is considered by many to be the best type of horse suited for farm work. The rougher appearing, more sluggish, coarse boned, unsound and badly blemished horse of the draft class find a market with the lumbermen, railroad contractors, etc., and are referred to by a variety of names on various markets such as 'loggers' 'railroaders' or 'contractors.' Despite the fact that there are few large cities in Canada, there are not enough good, big draft horses to supply the demand for them. The market for them is steadier and the average selling price is higher than for any other type of horse. It is safe to say that, were the horse dealers in Winnipeg asked to statj what type of horse sells most rapidly in that city, they would reply unanimously, 'Big ones.' To come in the draft class, horses should stand from 15.3 to 17.2 hands high, and should weigh from 1.600 pounds upwards. It is difficult to estimate the exact value of weight in this class of horses, but it is safe to say that every 100 lbs. over 1,600 is worth $25.00 per hundred, and frequently it brings $50.00. Fattening heavy horses before marketing will pay better than fattening any other kind of farm animals, when figured on the advance in values due to the gain in weight. In form the draft horse should be deep and wide, short in the back, strong coupled, evenly proportioned, set on medium short legs and sloping in shoulder and pastern. He should also have a muscular, massive anpearance. Because of the heavy weight of his body he must have large, strong bone in his legs, strong joints, and large, strong, tough feet. His action should be free, a long step straight and springy at both walk and trot; style, symmetry, beauty and good quality of hair, skin and bone add much to his value. Small blemishes do not materially lower his value but unsoundness is severely discriminated against. There are many horses, which, because of their suitability and almost universal use for farm work, have been given a market and show ring classification under the general name agricultural horses. In breeding, by far the larger number of these horses are grade draft horses produced by crossing a draft stallion on common 1,200 to 1,500 lb. farm mares of mixed breeding. Some are altogether a draft extraction, but because of lack of feed, when young, or working at too early age, have failed to attain sufficient size and weight to put them in the draft class. They are considered by many to be the best possible type of horse for field work. They form a large part of the Spring trade when farmers are buying. They should be judged on practically the same basis as draft horses, but ranging in height from 15.2 to 17 hands high and in weight from 1,4'.)0 to 1,600 lbs. The most desirable heigh is 16 to 16.2 hands and weight 1,500 to 1,600 lbs. A trifle more length of leg than in the draft horse is permissible and a trifle quicker step, particularly at the walk, is desirable. The farm chunk is in type a miniature draft horse standing from 15 to 15.3 hands high and weighing from 1,2)0 to 1,400 lbs. Much of the farm work of the Province is accomplished by horses of this type. With the exception of a few of the more stylish ones they are about the cheapest type to be found on the market. Many farmers buy them simply because they are cheap and make good slaves to work under the charge of cheap farm hands. Because of his low market value, the breeding of this type should not be encouraged, and when a classification of any kind is made for them at an agricultural society show it should be limited to one class, and that for teams in harness. I At his best the farm chunk frequently sells as an express or heavy delivery wagon horse. Common defects of this class are straight shoulders; straight, short, stubby pasterns and weak ' knees. In breeding they usually [ prove to be a misfit and may be produced in a number of ways, ; such as by the crossing of undersized draft stallions on light ' mares or some light stallions on heavy mares or some may be of pure draft breeding, but stunted in growth as colts. This term is used to cover a class of horses which may be and are used for a variety of different kinds of work, all calling for a horse of somewhat the same type. While on the farm the general purpose horse may be called upon to do almost any kind i of work depending upon where he is most needed rather than upon his read adaptability to any particular line of work. The advisability of breeding general purpose horses with which to do farm work is doubtful as it will usually pay the farmer better to breed or buy the heavy ones for his field work and heavy hauling, and then keep one horse or pair of horses of the carriage or roadster type for his road work. Cold Weather The thermometer went below the zero mark this week for the first time since .he middle of February, 1910. Since Monday the temperature has swung from four below to thirty-six below in the early mornings, the latter being the lowest point reached and that on two occasions only. Ashcroft, Jan. 11:-The coldest wave for many years is being experienced along the Cariboo Road. It was twenty-three below here last night and sixty at Quesnel. All church services will be held in the Mission schoolhouse tomorrow at the usual hours. George Findlay returned on Wednesday from Copper City. He reports considerable activity on the grade between that point and Hazelton. The trail is bare in many places below Lome Creek. DISSOLUTION OF PARTNERSHIP.
