No. 39. HAZELTON, B. C, SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 1911. EIGHT PAGES SILVER CUP IS A MINE A LARGE AMOUNT OF ORE IS NOW IN SIGHT Can Now Be Considered A Proven Property With A Very Bright Future Everyone who has been familiar with what has been going on at the Silver Cup for the past year and four months now yields the property the distinction of being a mine. In addition to this the property is being well handled. All the stock, outside of the treasury shares sold to the public, is held by a small group of men closely banded together and working with perfect harmony. The company has been fortunate in securing a very capable superintendent in Rod McCrimmon, who is bringing the mine through the development stage without wasting the company's money. There is enough money in the treasury to last, with the present number of men employed, for a year. There are shares enough in the treasury to provide al! the necessary developments including all machinery for the mine and a concentrator for the second class ores. An unfortunate announcement of a big strike, in No. 1 tunnel over a year ago, which on continued driving did not hold out, tended to depress the confidence of people generally in the worth of the proposition; but the results obtained in No. 2 tunnel and in No. 4 tunnel, together with the continuous body of ore in No. 1 tunnel and surface openings indicates the presence of high grade ore twelve inches wide through two claims and exposed at an estimated depth of twelve hundred feet in the bottom of the glacial basin worn out of the side of the mountain. Several veins are known to exist on the property and the recent strike in the tunnel being driven on the Duke claim bears up in quantity and quality even better than the Silver Cup vein, in so far as shown by present development. Ore from the Silver Cup goesj about nine cubic feet to the ton and ore a foot wide of the length and depth already shown on the property runs into dollars pretty fast when it is of the value of the shipment made last summer, which yielded slightly over $64 per ton net after deducting freight and treatment charges from Prince Rupert. With a railway spur to Nine Mile mountain or even a wagon ' road frcm the mine to the railway upwards of half the entire values in the ore will be profit. | As soon as navigation opens and some of the snow goes off the hills so that people can see for themselves what is really there, it is a sure prediction there will be a strong movement in the stock. I Placer Excitement In Ontario Cochrane, Ont, March 30:- While taking down a chimney on the Cochrane Hotel which was burned in last week's fire, a plumber named Earle saw a shining speck of metal in the mortar surrounding the bricks and took it to a prospector friend who pronounced it gold. The sand used in the chimney originated from a pit where gravel had been dug for grading. The news caused an exodus* from the town headed by Mayor McManus and the whole gravel pit was staked solid. Other gold seekers staked the only pit in the vicinity and are now busy panning gravel. COAL MINERS ON STRIKE Alliance Expected To Come Paris, March 30:-The reorganization of the British Army which it now in progress is viewed favorably here. The entente cordiale already existing is expected to merge into a defensive alliance of both navies, later to be followed by a similiar agreement regarding the armies. Small Successes for Insurrectos San Antonio. Tex., March 30: An unconfirmed report says that Diaz has resigned. Elpaso, March 30:-The revolutionists led by Loya slaughtered every federal official in the town of Guazarapas. Several small towns have been captured by the insurrectos and banks, jjoitofficHS and tax collectors robbed. The closing down of the mines at Tepic has thrown 3,000 men out of employment and it is expected that a majority of them will join the insurgents. Arbitration Impossible Berlin, March 31: Discussing in the Reichstag today the proposed extension of international arbitration Chancellor Von Holl- weg classed universal arbitration and universal disarmament as ideals impossible of realization. Wappenstein Again Arrested Seattle, March 30:- Former chief of police Wappenstein, now at liberty under total bonds aggregating $65,000 was arrested again today charged with receiving a bribe while chief and was subsequently released on $15,000 bail. Cabinet Changes Rumored Ottawa, March 30: - Inside political circles had it today that Lemieux, postmaster general, would be called to the portfolio of marine and fisheries to replace Brodeur whose promotion to the supreme court is said to be only a question of time. Lmbezzler Arrested Pittsburg, March 30: - Chas. D. Sheldon alias Chas. D. Washburn of Montreal, wanted there for embezzlement of nearly two million dollars, was arrested here today. Bankers Stay In Jail Washington, D. C, March 30: Executive clemency will not be extended to Chas. W. Morse and John R. Walsh, bankers, who are serving fifteen and five years respectively. SIX THOUSAND MI;N WALK OUT THIS WEEK Expiration of Agreement Is Signal for Stoppage of Work In Coa! Fields Fernie, April liOver 6,000 men laid down their tools yes- ter day at the completion of the day's work and walked out of the mines of the district. The agreement between miners and operators which had governed wages and other regulations had expired by time limit. Practically 6,000 of the men are members of the United Mine Workers of America, the remainder being non-union men who had been working with the others. 2,400 were employed by the Crows Nest Pays Co. The mines at Hosmer, Coleman, Blairmore, Frank, Lille, Bellevue, Maple Leaf, Passburg, Hillcrest, Bur- mis, Lethbridge, Diamond City, Royal Collieries, Canmore and Bankhead are all idle today. Corbin is the only place left I working where the conflict is put off till May. The mines were producing 10,000 tons a day. An immediate effect upon the business interests by the close down has long been discounted by the long drawn out negotions. Alaska Coal Fraud Cases Up for Trial Seattle, March 30:-The trial began today of United States against Chas. F. Munday, A. W. Shilels, Earl E. Siegley and A. H. Stracey for alleged conspiracy to defraud the government out of 6,000 acres of coal land in Alaska valued at a hundred million, by the use of dummy entries. The claims are said to be the richest in Alaska and are in what is known as the English grcup. These and all whose locators have been indicted will be cancelled. $70,000 FOR 940 ACRES LOCAL MEN SKLL SECTION AM) HALF AT (iOOD F1QURE The Purchase Indicates a Comprehensive Plan for a Large Townsite Last of Boers May Return Home A deal which has been pending for some time was closed this week whereby seven Hazelton men disposed of approximately Hamilton, Bermuda, March 30: 940 acres of land in the vicinity The last of the Boer irrecon- of the Haquelget Indian reserva- cilables who still refuse to take tion for a lump sum of $70,000. oath of allegiance are being per- The vendors are E. Victoria, March 31:-Bitter remarks were made concerning the Monroe doctrine of the United States by a Japanese politician, Dr. Hasagawa, at a banquet attended by many notable Japanese including members of parliament, according to Japanese papers received by the steamer Awa Maru. He said: "It is j obvious that the ambition of the United States is to command supremacy in the Pacific and become the first political power in the world. Commodore Perry's visit to Japan fifty years ago was prompted by no other motive than this. To worship the United States as a benefactor of Japan was a senseless an act as ' for a half witted damsel to fall in love with the burglar who has broken in to rob and assault her." He added that Japan should keep a close watch on the ambitions of the United States. POLICE CALENDAR Pierr_, an Indian, charged , with having liquor in his possession, was given four months in jail, without the option of a fine. James Phillips, found guilty of supplying Pierre with the intoxicant, was fined $125 and costs or three months. C. E. Ellaby, drunk and disorderly, was assessed $10 and costs. Patrick Cassidy paid a fine of $5 and costs for disorderly conduct and drunkenness. , detailed report of every building ! in an unsafe condition. Inquiry Into Sechelt Disaster Victoria, March 30:-The inquiry into the loss of the steamer Sechelt last Friday opened today. Arthur Hicks a former engineer gave evidence that the vessel was unseaworthy; was cranky and that he considered that she should not have gone to sea on the day of disaster. Strike at Lethbridge Mines Lethbridge, Alberta, March 30: Over six hundred miners will throw down picks and shovels tomorrow at the close of the day shift and walk out of the est to the speculation regarding the townsite situation of the future as it joins on two sides the "Taylor section." where the G. T. P. has a 300 foot right of way, practically a mile long, several buildings erected and the headquarters camp for the engineering staff. To the outsider familiar with the situation in this vicinity this latest purchase indicates a comprehensive plan for a large town- site when the time is ripe. Developments in this country already indicate a coming population that will support a large town. That this town and the trading center of the whole district is to be established some- mines here. APRIL 1, lilll An Exaggerated As we took occasion to say once before in slightly different language the worst advertisement the northern interior of British Columbia and the country along the Grand Trunk Pacific can have is that coming from a lot of sore-headed "suckers" run- ning around "squealing" for their money lost in wild-cat propositions for which the great wealth of this country is made the pretext. The Grand Trunk B. C. Coal Company, holding 7.680 acres of land in Bulkley valley, about twenty miles east of Hazelton, some time since, and with the evident intention to bolster up their proposition, put out in type written form a report upon their property by Alexander Faulds, M.E.,M. Inst. M. E. etc. Upon the front page are two paragraphs taken from the body of the report. "The 7,680 acres are an excellent and adequate commercial assemblage for colliery operations capable of producing a dailv output of 1,000 tons for about 100 years." "The data and reasons for favorable conclusions have been carefully laid before you in this report, promising very profitable returns of $1.00 per ton of 2,000 pounds of coal, or a return of $24.00 for every dollar invested which is 2400 per cent, and would result in redeeming the original capital in a comparatively short period of about six years." Here is another extract from the report which the reader is invited to compare with the above and do not overlook the "if." "From the geological evidences and numerous outcrops and coal seams along the west shore of I the Bulkley river which are also ' visible on the east shore and the sedimentary or coal bearing rocks which are seen on several of the j creeks or tributaries of the river j and from other available and authentic information gained by the reporter, we can approximately, and that very conservatively, from the facts indicating the general permanence and con-! tinuity of these coal seams, estimate if a four foot seam be discovered by development in the property then such quantities of merchantable coal that will pass over 1 1-4 inch spaced bar screen at 1000 tons per acre per foot thick would amount to 24 million tons for this seam only and at an output of 1000 tons daily or 1-4 million tons annually would last 100 years." "About 1-4 of a mile further south from the present operating slope on the west shore and bank of the Bulkley river a coal seam : about six (6) feet thick has been discovered by your mine foreman, D. J. Stewart, as you informed me." Is it conceivable that an engineer would come all the way from Vancouver to examine a piece of property and then not visit a six foot coal seam only a quarter of a mile away? If he did visit it what has become of it in the meantime? R.C. Campbell-Johnston visited and reported on the same property earlierjin the summer of 1910. Why are no extracts from his report ever published by the company to help the sale of J stock? A valuable point was over- looked when it was omitted to state what amount of merchantable coal there is in the porphyry dikes on the property. Shortly after our first article dealing with this company's methods of selling stock appeared, we were favored with a visit by the managing director who complained that his company had been unjustly dealt with. We replied that if he felt that way and would write us to that effect after seeing the claims for him- J self, we would go out there at our own expense, spend the necessary time to go over the ground and then publish the truth as it appeared to The Herald's editor. That challenge is still open. No More Improvements For Hazelton It is understood the Provincial government will spend no more money in repairing side walks or building new ones in Hazelton. As a consequence the few hundred inhabitants of this busy place will wade through mud for several weeks until the spring rains are over and then have the same thing to contend with all summer after every heavy shower. All forms of taxes are drawn directly into the provincial treasury and there is no way outside of a grant from that treasury whereby any improvements can be undertaken unless by voluntary contribution. This is unsatisfactory and unfair as well. Even if it is expected that the greater part of the inhabitants will have moved to a new town j on the railway in a few years time, that new town is not yet j on the market and there is every likelihood that it will not be for some time to come. Meanwhile Hazelton remains the business and supply point for the whole district. The expansion in building has reached beyond the area of sidewalks in every direction, as small as the town is. Townspeople are tired and disgusted with hearing the disagreeable comments of visitors on the unkempt condition of the streets and it is hightime something was done in one way or another toward getting rid of at least some of the largest bodies of standing water. L. Kinman, computing charges on the cost of treatment .at Trail and freight over a completed railway line, puts the value at $10,000 for each foot it goes down. Placed in other words it means that if the ore will go down 100 feet with the same values and size that it has on the surface there is a million dollars in sight. The new member from Yale, Mr. Alexander Lucas, toward the! close of the recent session of the House, raised some very pertin- ent questions in his maiden j speech, which have on the whole called forth favorable comment in many quarters throughout the province. The question to which he desired particularly to refer was the somewhat unfortunate position of the average farmer in the province, who finds himself seriously handicapped by limited capital. If ample money were j available for farmers on the long j term payment plan, it would in large degree solve this farm labor question, and in this connection the fact should never be lost sight of that the small farmer, was the hope of the country. 7. Mr. Lucas believed that if such a commission were appointed and a systematic investigation of these questions brought about, information would be obtained which would be of the greatest use to the department in regard profitably be investigated by ajtural industry in British Colum- royal commission on agricultural, immigration and land settlement generally: 1. The best methods of clearing land and bringing it under profitable cultivation. 2. The best method of settling land for the promotion of mutual convenience and easy administration of the communities so formed. 3. The best methods of securing co-operation among settlers in regard to products of dairying, poultry raising and fruit cultivation, and for the marketing of these products. 4. The best methods of improving facilities of transportation. 5. The question of better financial facilities for farmers and the provision of cold storage and other modern facilities necessary | for the assistance of agricultural development. In this connection' he did not propose that the government should itself advance I moneys to farmers for the devel- opment of their holdings (al-1 though this was the practice in New Zealand and was there working out well) but to adopt i some such policy as that prevailing in Germany, France and other progressive countries. In New Zealand there was but a minimum of default on the state loans to farmers; and it was notable that no other industry was in the same position as agriculture in this province, in that all other industries enjoyed the advantage of operating under the credit system, as the second member for Vancouver had so clearly pointed out in his speech | of a few days ago. 6. 10.
