After it chances to | reach same damp place, In about tell i days, the moisture has wrought a miracle, for the once dead Is alive again, I green and grosing. The old time pllgriitis. who brought | buck thi" plant witli them from the j Holy Land, told wonderful tales of Its power to bloom out on Christmas day und gave It the name of resurrection flower. Another old legend names It St. Mary's rose, because It ls said that when Joseph and Mnry were fleeing from Egypt oue of these flowers grew trom every spot where they halted to rest. The dry ball when unfolding drops lis seed, and from these lt may be cultivated as an annual. In future war? of the Unit^ EtaUs there will he nc unidentified deaii after battles, because hereafter all officers and enlisted men in the American army will he tagged. Acting Secretarj of War Oliver has ordered thm aluminium disks, in- escribed with the officer's or soldier'i name, regimen! and company, be is- lued to every regular Boldier by the quartermaster's department. These will be worn suspended around the Beck under the clothing. The idea t>f tagging was recently suggested to the peneral staff by Surgeon Gen prai O'Beilly, who ha? just returned from Switzerland, where he repre- Beitted the United State? at the Ked Cross conference. Such a badge of identification is generally used in foreign armies. Thousands of unidentified dead of the civil war nov,- lie in Arlington cemetery, Virginia, and in other national ceine teries. Philadelphia l?ecord. China'* Fight on Opium. China has again decreed the abolition of the culture of opium poppies and the use of opium or iti products in any of its forms, save medicinal. This action, which comes in lhe shape of an imperial edict, was the direct result of the report of the Chinese commission appointed to visit this country and Europe, and the edict is signed by ihe heads of both civil and military affairs. This is nor the first attempt of China to free herself from the effect! of the opium trade. The first effort was made in 1839. That result led to a war with Great Britain, which profited bj the export/if opium to China, and as a resuit of the war the edict was recalled, nnd China had to pay an indemnity of-about $6,000,000. The McKinley Tomb. A contract has been let to a Windsor (Tt.) firm for the granite for ihe sarcophagus in which the bodies of President and Mrs. McKinley will lie at Canton, O. The material will be the green granite quarried only on Ascutney mountain, on the east side of the state. It will he from the same quarry which furnished stone for the Seth Low library of Columbia university. The contract calls for sixteen pieces of stone, the largest of which will weigh nine tons, to form two receptacles eight feet long, four feet wide and three feet deep. The whole will be surmounted by two capstones, the architect endeavoring to curry out the plan of the Napoleon sarcophagus in Paris. No Wonder He Found It. The papers relate it as h remark-' ible fact that Prank Bookwalter of Springfield, O., returned to his childhood's home after an absence of sixty-five years and found a dime that he had lost in a crack in the front steps when he was five years old. There is nothing remarkable in this story. Mr. Bookwalter is de- scribed as a millionaire. After sixty-five years' experience in picking up money it would have been a wonder if he had not found his .boyhood's dim*, especially as he knew where it wa\\ If the "lost dime had been Mr. KcnKefeller's, he wouW have found a dollar. General von Pitreich, who will take the place of Count Beck at the head of the general staff of Austria, is the second war minister on whom this honor has been conferred. The first Was General von John, who is remembered in Austrian military circles because of the remark which he made at a meeting of the equipment board. He said, "I cannot be successful with one pnir of trousers." 'ihe question undi r discussion was whether tlie en- listed men should he supplied witl one or two pairs, and ho won fo; the greater number by his short speech. fl Pm m It m fi m fi fl fl fl fl fl fl fl fl 1 ft M ^3SC2C3^^^^^r^^T^C3&/^ SHOES That Will Make Y William as a Matchmaker. To the Editor of thc Daily N< ws: SirKindly allow me some space in your'widely circulated paper to express my views on Air. Peebles' statement iu regard to excluding our Chi nese from the public schools. Mr. Peebles said that he did not consider it right or proper that the Cblneie should be allowed to come into contact with the white pupils be- cause the former are unsanitary. The Chinese scholars are clean, well dressed and look healthy. 1 have been go ing to school iu this town over a decade, and have never heard a single ease of a teacher complaining that we were untidy or tbat we had any . hind of disease, ls it then beeaua-' we are unclean? Of course not. What othtr objections has Mr. Peebles? He said that it was a serious question from many points of view to allow us to study with the white children. What are the points? We obey the rules of the school, respect our teachers, and are anxious to learn. Tne only complaints about us are, I think, the same old stories, invented by the anti-Asiatic league, saying that thc Chinese pupils hinder the progress of the white, that some Chinese are too old. 1 remember that when I was in the first primer and in s< cond primer, there were three Chinese in the room and they led the class almost everj nouth. Several Chinese pupils have won rolls of honor. These are about seven hundred Chinese in Xew Westminster, including Sapperton, and we have somewhere about twenty pupils in the school. . Even ahould the number of our students Le twice as great, would it be fair lo bar us tram school while six or seven hundred of our countrymen are paying taxes every year? Mos: of the Chinese pupil.-; are children o; the local Chinese merchants. Mr. Peei, les also wants to exclude the adults. Though the school is not compelled to take in the students over sixteen years of age, at tl* same time there is no law saying they should be barred. 1 think, iu case a few Chinese students who are over 1 sixteen should come asking for edu- cation, they should be admitted into senior grades if they can do the work. Just take them in, as your schools : have done, for the sake of the love of mankind. These young men. though a little too old, are, nevertheless, ear- I nest students. Why do Europe and America send missionaries to China. You claim that this is a Christian nation; remember, then, that Christ preached to the old aa well as to the youn?, to! foreigners as well as to the Jews. There is no benefit to this province in excluding us from your classes. The Bchools of Xew Westminst r should bear great men not only for British Columbia and for Canada, but. for the whole world. In spite of such a statement made by so prominent a j citizen ns Mr. Peebles, I am still confident tbat nearly all the people of New Westminster, all the teachers and trustees, an.l even Mr. Peebles himself, if he would not allow his mind to be inflamed by th.- fiery and .-elfish agitators of the anti-Asiatic league, welcome our Chine.se to their schools. In conclusion, let me remind a few of those who are against our Chines", if you did any wrong to Chinamen of yesterday tbey endured it without murmur, if you do any wrong to Chinamen of today they will ask why, an 1 If you do any wrong to Chinamen of tomorrow tbey will demand justice.
