Mining Trouble Settled The miners at Middlesboro collieries are all back at work, an amicable adjustment of the recent dispute having been arranged between the district representative of the union, T. C. Brooke's, and the officials of the coal company. The contract system is now in vogue, an agreement having been signed for thirteen months. It is expected by both parties that everything will now go along smoothly. Sad News Conflrttoed The death was reported a few weeks ago of David Nackew, a coal-miner, well and popularly known in the camp last summer. This news has since been confirmed by an article in the South Wales Echo of recent date. Mr. Nack- rew was killed by an explosion at St. Miguel colliery, Stone Cannon, Cal., last January. For some time there was doubt as to the authenticity of the reportof "Di's" death, but now that the news has been confirmed his numerous friends among the local miners and others will regret the circumstance very much. He was a native of South Wales, and about 32 years of age. There aae forty children on the roll at the Merritt public school-22 boys and 18 girls. J Spring plowing is reported to have started in the Claresholm district, Alberta, on February 27. Members from British Columbia, in the Dominion house, are asking for an additional experimental farm in this province. Owing to sickness, the entertainment of the Orange Lodge, which was to be held next Monday, March 22nd, will be postponed until further date. Geo. E. Hygh will enlarge and remodel his hotel this spring to keep in pace with the growing camp and his growing business. Our Lower Nicola correspondent was misinformed last week as regards Jos. Collett subdividing his ranch there into ten-acre blocks. B. Bewley has retired from the management of the Coutlee hotel, but does not intend to leave the valley. Thos. Williams is now officiating at this popular hostelry. Found. An empty tobacco pouch, containing celebrated Bailey mixture. Initials "F. B." Tobacco was extracted to pay expense of this ad. Armstrong will commence work next week on an enlargement to his store, which will be used for the post- office, business and general office. Mr. Armstrong is also calling for tenders for the erection of five cottages on his property east of the store. M. W. Saxon, who had a contract of clearing land for John Collett, left this week to take charge of Jas. Pooley's flock of sheep at Nicola. His son, Homer, who has been with him all winter, left for his home at Riverton, Wyoming. Two Days of Sport Have Been Arranged for This Tear and a Bumper Time and a Bumper Crowd Are AssuredList of Committees Merritt will celebrate Victoria day this year with two days of sport. The first day will be devoted to athletics, and Tuesday, May 25th, will be featured by horse-racing events. On the evening of the first day a grand baU will be held. The celebration will be conducted under the management of the Merritt Athletic club, which consists of practicaliy all the men of the townthose not members should lose no time in "catching up." A largely attended meeting was held in the Herald hall on Tuesday evening to start the ball rolling, G. B. Armstrong, president of the club, was in the chair. Owing to so much pressure upon his time, Geo. Thorn's resignation as sectetary was accepted and Frank Steele elected in his stead. The following committee^ were elected. Advertising committee: L. G. Lob- singer, J. Higgins and Fred Pyle. Horse-racing committee : J. Conklin, Wm. Mclntyre, U. S. Thomas and F. Steele. Athletic committee: Geo. Thom, Roy Thomas, J. Williams, W. H. Richardson and E. Fraser. Finance committee: G. E. Hygh, I. Eastwood, Wm. Mclntyre and A. S. Bennett. Entertainment committee: U. S. Thomas, Jas. Slater, John Adams and A. S. Bennett. Dance committee: A. Jackson, E. S. Thomas, A. S. Howes, J. Conklin, John Adams. These commitees have power to add to their numbers, and the president of the club is, of course, an ex-offlcio member of each. The following committee was appointed to draft out a constitution and set of by-laws to govern the proceedings of the club: H. Priest, F. Steele, U. S. Thomas. This will be presented at the next meeting. The committees are already working energetically, and are bound to make this second annual Victoria day celebration a perfect "hummer." Particulars of the movements of the various committees will be published from week to week. Regular general meetings will be held in the Herald hall each Tuesday evening. This (Friday) evening a special meeting was held for the puspose of organizing football, baseball and tennis clubs. As a result the following committees weie named: Football: Manager, F. Pyle; captain, A. S. Howes; vice-captain, J. Williams. Baseball: Manager, A. S. Bennett; captain, W. Richardson; vice-captain, J. Conklin. Tennis: President, B. Browitt; vice- president, H. W. Sutcliffe. Train Crashes into Station The express train from Boston, when approaching Windsor street station, at Montreal, on Wednesday was found to be without driver or engineer. The blowing out of a plug in the engine hurled the engineer from the cab and disabled the fireman, when the train was a mile from the station. With no one to guide it, the heavy train came thundering into the city at terrific speed, and jumping the track near the station, drove itself straight into the building through the heavy stone wall and into the ladies' waiting room, where six were killed and ten injured. The loss is estimated at $100,000. LOCAL NEWS Victoria Day Celebration at Merritt Two days of good, clean sport Everybody and his girl will be here Extensive building operations will be on the tapis shorl ly, R. H. Winny shipped twelve head of heavy horses to Victoria on Tuesday. W. C. Webber, is back to the valley after being in Kelowna for several months. Your repairs will be promptly attended to at coast prices. J. B. Haddad, Nicola, B. C. It is understood that a new coal outfit is to proceed with prospect work on the flat above the first hill on the Nicola road. This will mean just another boost for Merritt. ST. PATRICK BALL FIREMEN HONOR THE SHAMROCK ON SEVENTEENTH A Fine Crowd, a Fins Time and Fine Financial Results Combine to Make This Affair Most Successful One of the most successful balls ever held in Nicola valley was that which took place in Menzies' hall on theeveningof St. Patrick's day, under the auspices of the Merritt Volunteer Fire Brigade. Dancing started at nine o'clock, and the excellent program which had been arranged, kept a company of about fifty couples in the best of humor, and the light fantastic was tripped with animation until 4 a.m. Excellent music was furnished by a local orchestra and the floor was in "the pink of condition." At midnight a collation of most refreshing and palatable viands, ptepared by the ladies of Mrritt, was served. The firemen of the coal metropolis are to be congratulated upon the success of their dnnce, and it may be said that not one of the large number of visiiors present from various parts of the valley were disappointed with any detail of the initial entertainment given by the fire fighters. As a result of the St. Patrick ball the firemen will be enabled to increase their bank account by close to oHe hundred "plunks." Church Services. The coming summer will doubtless see a line of construction and deeelopment in progress that will be gratifying to all who have interests centred in this "vale of coal." Trouble has broken out in Methodist circles in Toronto, which threatens to spread and divide Methodism into two seperate camps in the Dominion. The superintendent of the church, called a minister in Toronto sharply to account, for his interpretation of certain scriptural passages, claiming the minister was preaching atheism. Prominent ministers and laymen are lining up on each side for the fray and it looks as if a war in the church of some magnitude will'be precipitated. The firs', annual celebration of the c M camp w in held last year and was a pronounced success. This year, with the much increased population and advanced prospects of the camp, the demonstration should certainly be a bumper one. The two days of sport as decided upon for the great national holiday, will prove an extra attraction, and the committees in charge of the various departments are already working hard.
