B. C. Vol. 4, No. 26. THURSDAY, JULY 2, 1908. $2 a Year. TO SHORTEN ROUTE NEW BRIDGE WILL BE BUILT OVER NIOOLA RIVER. D. G. Sutherland, Road Superintendent, Visits the District This Week Extensive Improvements Will Be Carried Out. Road Superintendent Sutherland was in Merritt this week and left Wednesday morning for the Tulameen section. He spent a few days with a representative of the railway commission looking over the road near Coutlee, adjacent to the railway track, and also at Canford, where the road is narrowed by fences being built on the right-of- way. Both places will be attended to. The bridge gang will be in Merritt this week and proceed to construct a bridge across the Nicola river on a line with Voght street, which will give Nicola closer communication with Merritt and the mines. A right-of-way has been secured from J. C. Conklin through his property. Mr. Sutherland will go thoroughly over the roads and will have his gangs make the repairs wherever they are necessary. Democratic Convention. Political developments at Denver, where the Democrats are to meet in National convention July 7th, will have a large share in the week's news. Delegates and others who expect to attend will begin to leave from the east and from the west the latter part of the week. The Tammany delegation from New York, nnmbering over 600, is planning to leave New York on Friday in special trains. Secretary Taft severed his connection with President Roosevelt's cabinet on Wednesday, when the portfolio of secretary of war will be assumed by Gen. Luke E. Wright, of Tennessee. Handbook of B. 0. Such publications as the "Handbook of British Columbia," recently published by the bureau of provincial information, do much to dispel the idea that no authoritative information of the resources of the province is available. This handbook of 63 pages, neatly printed and bound in pamphlet form, is not only an epitome of the possibilities of the province, but is also a guide for the intending settler or others. Ohuroh Services. Presbyterian Church: C. K. Mathewson will preach Sunday next in Merritt at 8 p. m. and Middlesboro at 7 p. m. Methodist Church: On Sunday next services at Nicola, 11 a. m. and 7.80 p. m., and Lower Nicola at 3 p. m by Rev. Fakeley; Lower Nicola, 7.30 p. m. Penny Postage. Penny postage between United States and Great Britain will become effective on October 1st. The rate will be the same as between Great Britain and her coloniesone penny, or two cents, per ounce. Wedding Bells. A happy event took place on Monday evening, when the nuptials of Miss Josie A. McKitrick, one of Lower Nicola's most popular young ladies, and John H. Adams, of the B. C. Amalgamated company, were celebrated. The wedding was a quiet one, only a few relatives and close friends of the contracting parties being present. The ceremony was performed at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Chas. E. Collett, at 7:30 sharp by the Ven. Archdeacon Small, after which a dainty wedding supper was partaken of, followed by a few hours of social enjoyment. Mr. and Mrs. Adams have taken up their residence in Merritt, and their many friends will join The Herald in wishing them a long and prosperous matrimonial career. ITEMS OF INTEREST THE HODOINS CHARGES TO BE DB BATED JULY 7. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Howse left this week for the coast. G. B. Armstrong was at Ashcroft on business this week-. Rev. C. K. Mathewson visited in the camp today from Nicola. J. Lawson, of Middlesboro colleries, was at Nicola on Wednesday on a business trip. Mrs. Jas. Chapman, of Lower Nicola, spent several days last week visiting with friends in Merritt. Fred. Gosby, who is connected with the boarding house at Middlesboro colleries, has returned from Vancouver. J. J. Plommer, of Vancouver, secretary of the Nicola Valley Coal and Coke company, was at Middlesboro this week. , Dr. Curtin, Carrol Charlton and J. B. Haddad, of Nicola, left on Monday evening by special stage for Princeton to take in the Dominion day 'sports. Alex. McPhaul, of Otter valley, is having a portion of his ranch surveyed into a townsite. According to the railway survey, a station will be put at his place. George Murk, of Penticton, has spent the past week in Nicola and is considering building a large business block on the corner of Voght street and Quil- chnna avenue. The Dominion house will prorogue in a very short time and, it is stated, will dissolve and the general elections will be held in September or probably at an earlier date. There is every indication of a short campaign. The syndicate which has secured an option on the ranches of J. N. Moore and Joseph Collett at the head of Nicola lake, and James Aird at Rockford, we learn have also secured Mrs. Palmer's ranch. With these fine ranches the syndicate has seoured the choicest in the valley for its purpose of cutting up into small farms. It is reported that Duncan Ross, the member for Yale-Cariboo, is on his way west from Ottawa to meet the Hon.W. J. Bowser, who is making a trip through this district. Mr. Ross made some caustic remarks about Hon. Mr. Bowser, re Japanese question, who refuted same and stated that he would meet Ross in his own district on the platform. There will be a hot time when they meet. I Majority and Minority Reports Handed to Commons.Dr. Ker 111 in Vancouver Hospital.Thu June Westward Ho. The majority and minority reports respecting the inquiry into the Hodgins charges were presented to the Commons Friday. The majority report finds that as provision is made in the Act for the reference of any dispute over classification to arbitration, it would be useless for the committee to continue the inquiry on that point. The report, after reviewing the evidence, finds that Major Hodgins not only failed to prove the charges published in the Victoria Colonist, but has specifically withdrawn the same and unqualifiedly exonerated the commissioners and their engineers from \\ any improper conduct, or of collusion with the contractors. The minority report of Messrs. Berker and Lennox finds that the papers produced by the commissioners show many charges of over-classification, of excessive allowances and undue payments by the commission to contractors, of a like description to those charged by Major Hodgins. These were formally made by the Grand Trunk Pacific. They involve enormous over-payments out of the public funds. The report goes on to state that the charges cover and include those made by Major Hodgins and are within the scope of the inquiry. Therefore, the committee should proceed with the investigation till completed. The question will be debated on July 7th. Lafferty Leaves. G. A. Lafferty, accountant in the Bank of Montreal at Nicola, left on this morning's train for Rossland, where he will occupy a similar position in the bank at that place. Last evening a number of his many friends gathered at Nicola and gave him a farewell party, which would have been much larger attended had it been known of his departure. Mr. Lafferty will be greatly missed in the valley, as he was popular in all quarters, and his enthusiasm in the furthering of outdoor sport was responsible for the success of the many celebrations held at Nicola and Quiichena. He leaves Nicola valley after a three years' residence with the good will of a host of friends and acquaintances, who wish him success and luck. MINISTERS' VISIT MEMBERS OP PROVINCIAL CABINET ON A TOUR. M. P. Stewart visited in the coal metropolis today. Wm. Munroe, of Nicola, was visiting in Merritt today. Westward Hoi Though late from the presses the June issue of Westward Ho with its splendid stories and illnstrations is by far the best number yet turned out. Cy War- man has a capital story The Heathen and Roy Horniman an equally well known magazine writer, contributes an amusing phantasy of the future entitled No Ball. Miss Irene MacColl, a young British Columbian writer who is .rapidly making a name for her fiction, has a sweet, though sad, story in As She Sowed. The Reef Landell's Woe by N. Tonrneur, The Brothers by Reuben Rambler are two good pieces of fiction. F. Burnett has an illustrated article on The Ruined Cities of Ceylon. Indian Legendry, The Log of Minsola, Photographic Notes, etc., are all of local interest, and the series of sketches on the various districts of the province under the heading of Potential Canada are truly excellent. Next month Westward Ho will commence its third volume and announce as a special feature a sketch of Sir Wilfred Laurier by the editor in his department Men I Have Met. Dr. Ker 111. Many friends of Dr. Harold Ker will regret to learn that he is-at present confined in the General hospital. The doctor, who has charge of the medical and hospital services of the Macdonnel- Gzowski camps at Field, met with an accident which caused septic poisoning of one of his fingers. No serious results are anticipated and Dr. Ker expects to return to Field in the course of a fortnight. John Mercer, of theMacdonnel- Gzowski staff at Field, who came down with Dr. Ker, was himself taken ill on the way here and is also confined to the hospital. Both patients are well known in Vancouver and their many friends will wish them a speedy recovery. Saturday Sunset, S. Tingley, of Ashcroft, was a visitor to the valley this week. Mrs. and Miss Wells, of Kamloops, returned home from a trip to Princeton on Saturday last. The C. P. R. is taking out two carloads each train from 1;he Middlesboro colleries for its own use. Mesdames Flannigan and McMillan and children were visiting at Lower Nicola a couple of days this week. Mrs. B. P. Little returned on Monday evening from Vancouver, and was accompanied by her son from Skokane. Mr. Little returned on Wednesday's train. J. Burnet and wife, of Nicola, who have been conducting the Bungalow boarding house, leave in a few days for Ashcroft, where they have taken over a restaurant. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. A. Richards and H. Goodisson left this Week for Victoria where they will remain several weeks before going to Salmon Arm, where Mr. Richards is opening a tourist hotel. The C. P. R. survey party is going along at a good rate and have secured a good grade up the Coldwater to Otter valley. They have moved camp from McKay's ranch and will continue on towards Summerland. Messrs. Poppin and McFarlane, who were prospecting in the Aspen Grove camp about three years ago, have had their labors rewarded by making a gold strike in Dead valley, Nevada, having sold their property for $75,000. B. Bewley, who has been connected with the Diamond Vale company for some time, with Mrs. Bewley, took charge of the Coutlee hotel at Coutlee on Tuesday. Mr. Bewley is an experienced hotel man and guests at this well known hostelry will recejve every attention. A Siwash known as Seymour Edwards, wanted in the Okanagan for horsestealing, was taken into custody by Constable Clark on Saturday at Hamilton mountain, where he was employed on the Douglas Lake company's roundup. Mr. Clark left Nicola with the accused on Tuesday's train, to hand him over to Chief Simmons of the provincial force at Vernon. Premier McBride and Dr. Young Will Speak at Merritt, and Hon. W. J. Bowser and F. J. Fulton at Nioola on Monday. Nicola Valley will be visited on Monday by Premier McBride, Attorney-General Bowser, Chief Commissioner Fulton and Provincial Secretary Young, who are making a tour along the line of railway. Owing to the short time they will be in the valley, it is likelv that. Premier McBride and Dr. Young will speak at Merritt on Monday evening and Hon. W. J. Bowser and F. J. Fulton at Nicola, all leaving by next morning's train for Ashcroft. Members of the Nicola Valley Conservative association will meet the party at Coutlee, and with the Premier and Dr. Young will visit the Nicola Valley Coal & Coke company and the Diamond Vale company properties, the attorney- general and chief commissioner going on to Nicola, and will return, next morning and go over the properties. Premier McBride and Dr. Young will leave Merritt Tuesday morning for Nicola, taking the train from that point. School Examination. The first annual examination at the Merritt public school was held on Friday, June 26th. The schoolroom was full, the people present taking great interest in the work of the children. At the concert following the chair was ably taken by Wm. Voght, and an entertaining program of songs, recitations, etc., gone through. At the close addresses were given by Dell King, Mrs. Marshall and the chairman, complimenting the schoolmistress on the progress made and the conduct of the children. There are .now twenty-six scholars or* the register, and the attendance has been remarkably regular. Fruit and candy were bought for the children by Messrs. Voght and Eastwood. Miners Elect Officers, The Merritt Local, 2927, U. M. W. of America held their semi-annual election of officers on Sunday last, resulting as follows: PresidentFrank Steel. Vice PresidentWatt Williams. Financial SecretaryThomas Calvert. Recording SecretaryWm. Everly. TreasurerNelson Walsh. WardenJames Egan. ConductorFrank Lester. TrusteesFrank Steel, Jas. Mallam, Nelson Walsh. Auditing CommitteeD. Thompson, N. Walsh, Wm. Everly. Born. Mecredy.-At Vancouver, B. C, on Tuesday, June 16th, 1908, to Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Mecredy, of Middlesboro, a daughter. Mrs. H. H. Price and children- are visiting at Coutlee, from Aspeu Grove*, for a few days. THE NICOLA HERALD THE NICOLA HERALD Published Every Thursday Satweription, in Advanae. $2 a Year Merritt, B.C., July 2, 1908. As will be seen elsewhere in this issue, Premier McBride and staff are slated for a visit to the Nicola velley next week. They will be sure of a hearty reception, not only on the part of their own party followers, but also from a great many who are of the Liberal persuasion, yet are level-headed enough to recognize the fact that the McBride administration, with its sane, progressive policy, is the only logical one for the province at this time. Although this riding returned an opposition member at the last election, the district has not been in the least slighted in the way of appropriations for public improvements. Sensible Grits realize that we have received our full share of appropriations, and many are anxious to clear their consciences at the coming general elections. Although somewhat at "outs'' with the Grand Trunk Pacific, John Houston, in the Prince Rupert Empire, gives credit where credit is due .and declares there is nothing in the reports that the G. T. P. purchases supplies in the United States to be used in connection with the construction of their railways in British Columbia. The Empire editor made a tour through the immense warehouse of Foley.Welsh & Stewart, the contractors, in which they have hundreds of tons of supplies, and he says nearly all the packages, boxes and bundles bear the "Made in Canada'' label. A limited quantity of necessary food-stuffs imported from California and th_ Orient, and the drill steel comes from England ; but eighty-gve per cent, of all supplies will be of Canadian manufacture. B. E. Walker, president of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, says the crop outlook in the west, from the reports received by the bank, is good. The natural result of a good crop, he intimates, will be that money will be easier, municipalities will find themselves able to sell their bonds, and some of them will take advantage of this perhaps to plunge into improvements on the old large scale. This will not be justified, he says, for the country needs caution as well as crop. The long drawn out negotiations between the two parties in the Commons over the elections bill, are now believed to have reached that stage where it is safe to expect that the business of parliament will be rapidly wound up and that prorogation may be looked for not later than July 18. There have been mutual concessions, the terms of which will shortly be made public and which, it is expected, will be accepted by the general public as "peace with honor." An order-in-council has been passed at Ottawa whereby a Hindu desiring admittance into Canada must possess $200 in cash. It is expected this will put an effective stop to the influx of these people. Wednesday last was Canada's birthday. She was 41 years old, with the healthy growth of a miss i in her teens. W. H. GRAY (R. M. Woodward's Sawmill.)
