Passenger tratlic was hoa.v las' Thursday night round thc Upem House, and the extra crews and switchmen put on by the above orders had their work cut out piloting the passengers into their respective sidings. An active and capable com mittee handled the vast crowd as it came into the Opera House in un incessant stream, in a manner which showed what system and method can accomplish. LAVISH DECORATIONS. The decoration scheme wns lavish and artistic, bunting and flags being prominent, while greenery and strings of colored electric lamps added by their contrast, a rich glow- over the hall. A large sign was suspended over the stage, artistically painted with railway semaphores and other emblems, and bearing the words "The Railwaymen At Home with their friends," the work of R. Z. Crawford, and was much admired, while a headlight and other insignia of tbe railroad calling gave a business like aspect to the scene. A wealth of color from ceiling to floor gave the house a gala appearance, nnd the committee deserve much cred it for their skill and artistic taste. LARGEST CROWD YET. The gallery was thronged with interested spectators, while it is safe to say that aever has such a large and representative gathering been seen in tbe opera house, evidencing the popularity of the railroad boys, and their prowess as hosts. The floor was in good condition an.l R. Gordon and Guy Barber acting as M.C.'s and road ma iters, led off with the Grand March. This was undoubtedly thc biggest of its kind ever seen in Revelstoke, anl every guest participating went through the evolutions of the favorite and fascinating and alluring cirele with pleasurable anticipation. Revelstoke was "all there" and spirits were high. N'ever befor? have the ladies had such zealous cavaliers, for the railroad boys were untiring in their work of introducing partners and making all feel at home. DANCING MADE EASY. In order to rendering dancing easy and give the huge throng an eipial chance, the men were divided into the "reds" and "blueB" nnd the scheme worked out very well. Those on the si,ic track while tbe others were dancing being glad of the brief rest. Switching partners continued till midnight, when a hault was called for slipper. A feature of the event was the ever popular " headlight" waltz, the dancers being ilium mated by the dazzling shaft of light from the headlight of engine 1SS2. FEEDING THE MULTITUDES The more imaginative among the audience here saw the characteristic power of thc railroad, its progress and value, on the other bnnd its ioOial and human side, showing the railroad men as princes among entertainers. Feeding the "500O" was a triumph of method, system and organization, and the highest commendation must be given to thc hosts for the manner in which they bandied this all importantfeature of the evening. The hall was soon cleared nfter the many dainties had been consumed, and "line clear" was again the order and switching recommenced; this was no easy matter, owing to the large number of dancers, hut all wero out for pleasure nnd made ii„-ht of thc sundry humps, slides and collisions, although lew of them wore "head-on." QUESTS KN.invEli DANCE Dnncing was carried oil till an enrly hour i n Friday morning nnd the merry crowd begun to disperse. waiting and baggage rooms were however, rapidly emptied and "all music; furnished by the Revelstoke Orchestra, which being a new innovation are worthy of public notice, and deserve encouragement. Wedding Presentation Assault and Robbery Case, Rex vs. Griff, Dismissed A sitting of the County Court was held on Wednesday, the 14th inst, with Judge Forin presiding. The most important, and only criminal case on the list was that of Rex v. Grill, an election for speedy trial. The charge preferred was rob bery and violence. It was alleged tbat on the night of November 10th the accused assaulted nnd robbed nn old man named John Finlay, in the ■vest end of the city near the railway bridge. Finlay on being sworn stat ed that he had come up from Arrowhead that evening with the accused and his two companions, Genuk and Pallia—who were held by the polico to testify. After having a drink at the City hotel about G:30 p.m., upon the suggestion of the accused he accompanied him down the railway track. When nearing the C.P.R. bridge he was suddenly struck on the head by the alleged assailant and relieved of his purse containing over a hundred dollars nnd left in an unconscience condition. Upon recovering himself he made his way to the Oriental hotel, where the police and medical aid were summoned. Tbe evidence of the police showed that the accused with his two companions were arrested at the house of Violet Blashlield, a house in the lower town not many yards from the scene of the alleged hold-up. At the time he was taken into custody, the accused had neither money or pocket-book on his person. His companion, Pallis, however, had three pocket-books—two containing $180.00 each and the other only a small Bum of money. Upon investigation, shoe marks freshly imprinted in the snow were found leading from the spot of the alleged robbery to the house of Violet Blashfleld and the shoes of the accused and his oompanioni when fitted in these shoe-prints correspond ed in size. Violet Blashlield on being called and sworn, testified that the accused nnd his companions had come to her house about 7:40 p.m. on the evening of Nov. 10th, and that the accused was apparently very nervous—going out and coming in the back door of her house several times.. Vernice Coil an inmate of the house of Violet Blashlield, corroborated the evidence of the latter and further stated that Pallis had shown her three pocket- books in his possession. The defence set up was an alibi in support of which several witnesses were called, the evidence of whom showed that the accused and his com panions were at the Victoria hotel at the time the hold-up was alleged to have occurred. Also thnt they went directly down the sidewalk from the City hotel to lower towu, and that the accused did not accompany Finlay down the track as alleged by the prosecution. His Honour, in giving judgment lwelt upon the involved an.l complicated state of the evidence, an.l remarked upon the advanced age and scmi-intoxicatcd condition of Finlay, who wns apparently in his dotage, nd laboring under a delusion as to his indentilication of the accused and ickct-hock. He also pointed out, as appeared from the evidence, that is the accused had only been in thc city on one previous occasion, and hon only at the depot, It was highly improbable that ho would suggest walking down to lower town by way of the track. Further, tho prosecution hnd failed to establish nny definite connection between tho money alleged to have been stolen and thc accused. Consequently he felt tho prisoner should he given tho benefit of thc doubt and dismissed the case. W. I. Briggs appeared (or the prosecution, nnd G. S. McCartor for the defence. There appears to be considerable mystery surrounding this assault and robbery which ihould be looked Into further by the police Power Plant Ciiristeoed On Wednesday last, the Executive of the Conservative Association of this city, met in lho King Edward hotel at a supper provided by thc proprietor, when n presentation was made by tbe association to their secretary Theodore J. Fruit Packing Schools It is the intention of the provincial department of agricultural in the near future to establish Iruit packing schools in tho various fruit districts of the province, in order to teach up-to date nnd practical methods ol packing and grading fruits. As an experiment this work was organized last season in the Oknnagan Valley and the results obtained there have been so generally satisfactory and encouraging that it has been decided to further extend this work so as to give all the principal centreB of fruit production tbe benefit to bc de rived from the fruit packing schoolB. Moosejaw Went Dry Itcginn, Dec. IG.—Local option was voted on yesterday in several towns nnd all the cities ol Saskatchewan. From the returns received so far, it is seen that local option carried in only one place, namely, the city of Moosejaw, whore it was given a majority of 190 out of a vote of 20O0. In Rcginn the measure was defected by only 89 votes, which is a source ol satisfaction to the advo catea ol the measure, although they counted on a victory. Saekatoon went in favor of the wets by n majority of 2(;fl while in Prince Allien local option was defeated by a majority of 321. Rosthern Weyliui-n nnd Indian Head also voted wet. These are all thc places heard Irom at present, but it looks liko a general defeat lor the drys. Quit Work Dirty Omaha, Neb., Dec. 1(5.—Cleanliness is not next to godliness on the big llniTimi.il railroad system, where orders have just been issued that the trainman who eomes into a terminal with clean bands or face will be sum marlly discharged. In the future all j trainmen are expected to have dirty hand*, grimy faces, dusty clothing, nnd idn.i's that do not shine. Thc or- [der, which is official, applies to about 36,000 employee! and embraces all lhe roads of tbe llnrriman system between the Missouri river and Paget * and New Orleans to tho l'a- cIBi I icean. The "ilirty" order, ab it Is called , iin* employee* nf the road, Ib al- ther in the Interest of safety and Is only one of the rules by which the l in iiiiiiiii railroads are waging a re- Icntless war against accidents to paB nnl to employees. 1'nofflclai- ly, (lie order reads: "He who wishes to hold his job ae engineer, fireman, conductor, flag man or brnkemnn mist como into terminals with unwished hands and dirty face." The Harrlmnn roads, of all lines in the west, have lower bad wrecks thnn any of their competitors, according to tho Interstate commerce commission stntistics, nnd by making tho cmployocs In the train service come Into terminals with unkempt clothing and unwashed hands and faces tbo ofllclnls expect to have oven fewer accidents in tho future than in tho past. AssiBtaut Genernl Mnnngcr Ware, of the Union Pacific, la crodited with having originated the "dirty" order and has disseminated the idea among the other roads of tho system. According to Mr. Waro, close investigation resulted in tho disco ory that the biggest wrecks on his n *.d happened at terminal points. And in ninny cases the engineer or fireman, instead of being in the cab watching diligently for some signal or obstruc tion on the tracks, has been down In the gangway, or some other convenient point, adjusting a necktie, removing ovoralls, washing his faco and hands and making himself otherwise presentable in order that bo would not havo to spend time doing so after he bad surrondorod his locomotive at the end ol the run. In some enscs it was found that both engineer and liroman were down in the gnngway, leaving tho locomotive to run Itself. Theso actions on tho part ol tho trainmen always lako place at the end of the run and usually as the train is entering a city. At such times, when streets are b-dng crossed every minute, and when switch tracks are very frequent, the locomotive most needs its driver. To guard against thia lack watchfulness Mr. Ware has ordered thnt trainmen shnll not leave their posts until the run is ended, and iii-inin facie evidence that his order hns been obeyed will be tho fact that the trainmen has clean hands and (ace or has "dressed up" in any manner whatevor.
