CANADA'S CLIMATE Perfect Summer and Autumn , Weather Ottawa, December 17,—In an address before the Canadian Club oo Saturday, Hr. R. F. Stop rt, director ol the meteorological offices, Toronto, gsve a comprehensive description of the climate ol Canada. He laid that while European! thought Canada was a northerly country, Ottawa wai further south than Venice; Toronto wai 550 milei south of London, and Winnipeg about 100. The mildest winter! in Canada were in Southern Alberta. Of the country lying between Lakei Athabasca snd Slave and Hudson Bay, Mr. Stupart was dubious si to whether it would ever be used tor sgricultural purpose!. At Fort Churchill the mean temperature o June was no higher than tbat of Mac' Ibod for April, and the mean lor July was not ss high as on Mackenzie river at the Arctic Circle. Among other items in the address were statements that one inch of rain means 72,000 torn per square mile. All Cauada was favored with more sunshine than any portion ol Great Britain, Germany, Holland or" Northern France. The Summer temperature per centage ol the Dominion wss between 51 and 59 degrees, while louthermost England it was generally between 35 and 46, Tbe salient feature ol Canada's climate, Mr. Stupart said, was not the oold of winter, but the perfection of ber Hummer and Autumn, UNEMPLOYED RELIEF Provincial Government to Commence Road Work at Pt. By ths issue ol de- POLICE PROTECTION. Our attention hai been called to the continual noise and disturbance during performances in the opera house, which has the eflect of not only being a distinct annoyance to those of our citizens who do attend that place of amusement but also of keeping others away who would otherwise go. No one suffers from tbis nuiiance as much ai the opera house management themselves and it would be to their own interests to study this part of their business a little more closely. The owners of tbe opera liouse are bound to supply their own police and police protection and this has not been done, hence the unseemly conduct in the galleries. Smoking too is invariably practiced and this besides being a nuisance and annoyance to others iB dangerous in the extreme and should be severely dealt with by those in authority. We would advise therefore that the management take measures to in luture employ special police, as the bylawi demand, who will keep order in tbe galleries and mcidently protect the public; if this is done and the unruly aud objectionable element summarily removed we venture to assert tbat the businesi of the bouse will increase and receive far larger patronage, oi the mill W.
