Bather which prevails in: stoke, the attendance at thfl o\\ istic meetings has been very couraglng, Lasl Sabbath mornii the congregation which nearly Ailed Bt, John's church, was deeply impressed by Dr. Patterson's discourse on "Thc Standing Army." Tho address at i!:45 in the Edison theatre was a clever combination of spontaneous wit, wisdom and deep Christian teaching. Again in the evening a large congregation greeted Dr. Patterson and Mr. Weaver. What impresses ono most in all these meetings is tlie clear, simple and unaffected presentation of the gospel. There are no strained efforts after something new and startling. The old story of Jesus aud thc Cross i8 presented in such an attractive and powerful manner that even those who never go to church ai-o constrained to say, "I like that man's speaking." The people ol Itevelstoke are beginning to realize what a rare privilege it is to hear a man of the calibre of Dr. I'atterson. Mr. Weaver, the musical director, besides being a singer of splendid ability, has the unconscious gift of rousing the congregation to sing. The meetings will continue eaeh night of this week in St. John's church. Do not fail to come there Is a welcome and a message for you. Fierce Struggle j Ladies'Furs! Ladies' Furs! C WEDNESDAY, NOV. 23RD, 191D G. P. R. Silver Jubilee tho too, was and the In a recent issue we etingratulntcd the O.P.R. on its silver jubilee of the completion ul its transcontinental service and it may he ol interest to our readers to givo a brief resume of thc company's history and progress. It iB a noteworthy circumstance that practically all the men who wero at thc head ot tho enterprise when It was lieing carried through to completion are still alive. Lord Btrathcona, then Hon. Donald A. Smith, who drove the fast spike unit ing the Atlantic and the I'acilic divisions of tho rails, is yet hale and hearty, and still a member ot company's directorate. So, arc Lord Mount Stephen, who then president ol the company Sir William Van Home, then general manager. Sir Thomas Shaughnessy, then the assistant general manager, now works as hard as ever in thc office of president ol thc company, and Mr. 1. Q. Ogdon, then the comptroller, is still at the head ot the acco' iting department. The only one o the original officials ot the company who has passed away is Mr. 0. Dri.ikwater, who held the office of secretary until a year or two ago. Thelast spike was (driven in the Rocky Mountains on November "th, 1885. and the news of the completion of this tremendous transportation project was telegraphed around the world. Many congratulatory messages were received by the leaders ol lho er perprlee, among them being one trom Queen Victoria, who congratulated the people ol Canada upon thc finishing of a work which she regarded as of the utmost importance to the empire, since it welded a steel lin uniting her eastern and western dominions by a new all-Uritish route. >t the time of it*- completion the railway was simply a single track 'rom Montreal to Tort Moody on ' i iurrard inlet, with practically no ' eeders. Tort Moody was soon .jund unsuitable, and the rails were pushed on to Vancouver, then a ■settlement surrounded by dense forests. HOW THE ROAD HAS GROWN The total length ot rails in operation in 1S85 was 4,337; todny the compnny owns, operates, or leases, 15,226 miles, including the Soo and Maruuettc railways, which give it practically a second transcontinental route. The total earnings of the compnny in 18S5 were 18,368,493 and the operating expenses $5,143,276 . Last year the total earnings (railway alone) were $94,989,49* and the operating expenses $61,149,534. The passengers carried in 1885 were wns was 2,8*5'.1,222. Last year the total was 11,17'2,8'Jl. The freight handled in 1885 4,881,805 tons. Last year it 20,555,368 tons. Thc locomotives in operation in 1886 numbered 836. Today the company has 1,834, each lour times as big and powerful as the small engines which were the standard at the birth of tho road. It had then 289 pasBenger cars, as against 1,515 today; 31 sleeping nnd dining cars, to 294 now; 7,838 trelght cars, ns against 48,850 today. Thc lirst transcontinental train started from the old Dalhoiisie stnt- ion on Notre Dnmc street, Montreal. Today this old station forms part of a huge terminal scheme on the development of which tho company is spending $3,000,000, while at Windsor street, Montreal, one of the larg- \\ ost terminal schemes on the contin- I ent is being carried out. I The company also has established big manufacturing shops, a chain of palatial hotels, largely supplied with provisions from its own farms and it has huge irrigation works, smelting enterprises, as well as express, telegraph and telephone systems.
