A representative ot the Review on Wednesday afternoon last made a trip to the placer grounds of the Spokane Falls Placer Mining Co., ami while there noted the method of treatment. The claims are within the city limits of Trout Lake, and the dam which was constructed last fall is observable from the wagon n>ad. Two men were at work when the scribe made his visit, and a glance showed that a clean-up was in swing. The past week ha*, been devoted to clearing thc sluice boxes ,,f ice, and that being accomplished, placer operations proper will ensue lienccfortl. Messrs. W. F. Dtinphy and Norris Smith were engaged in the work, the latter shoveling the dirt from the bed of the creek into pans, which were being dumped in the sluice box about three rods distant by the former. The gold ob ained being of the shot anil nugget variety the blanketing process is not neoeasary, rilllcrs in the box easily retaining the precious metal. During the shoveling operations some twenty nuggets of an average of \\2 grains were picked from the dirt, and after live hours shove ing the water was cut off ami the rilllcrs lifted. The old system of washing the dirt in pans win then proceeded with, and after theb'ack sand had been carefully rounded, our representative saw enough gold to cause a stampede even in Alaska. GLARINO EXAMPLE OF M1S.- MANAOKMENT WHICH HAS A SEHIOUS EFFECT ON LOCAL CONDITIONS. A sample of the way in which this country is being hoodooed by the C.P.R. officials of the Fast. A letter was recelvetl this week by one of our local merchants from a wholesale dealer in Montreal, from which we gice the following extract : "Your esteemed order shipped March 8th. We bo? It advise yon that the Railway people linve're- fused the ense nnd returned same to us, stating that this station (Trout Luke) is closed up on account of ice forming on the lake. Kindly instruct us how to ship." We cannot understand such action on the part of the railway people, as for the past seven or eight years conditions have been the same, with the exception of last year, and all goods consigned to this place have come forward via Arrowhead. Capital from Montreal as well as other Eastern towns is interested in this part of the country, and other deals are ou which will in? tcrest more, and it does us incaD culable injury to have it known that we are through the winter tied up without transportation of any kind. Surely we have enough to contend with getting in and out to Arrowhead without putting us down as being entirely shut off from the outside world. If the C.P.R. had done the right thing there would have been no necessity to have the lake closed up. We beliove that to •- u-d 5»y re? currence of this trouble the lake service should be done away with and the road extended to Trout Lake. We have pointed out In previous issues that it would be a paying proposition to the C.P.R. and at the same time be of vast benefit to the Trout Lake district.
