The extraordinary Influence which Canada has acquired in Britain since Sir Wilfred Laurier came to power is Shown by the change in the status of this country at the Paris exposition. Originally even the name of Canada was ignored in the olllciul catalogues, aud she had no part assigned in the official demonstrations. Hon. J. Israel Tarte, on his arrival in Paris, discovered this, and at once communicated with | placarded at Campbell and elsewhere, the imperial authorities. The British, however, held them j ill check until the column reached a i point of safety, when they retired. The British hail several casualities. The j Boers fought determinedly anil must! have suffered considerably, us they once \\ advanced to within 800 yards of the hill, j whence a concealed detachment of the, British opened a heavy fusllade on them. The war ollice has received the following dispatch from Lord Roberts, tinted Bloemfontein, April 21: "Run- dle's force came in contact with the enemy yesterday, four miles southwest of Dewetsdorp. They occupied strong positions couering the town. The yoe- inanry ami mounted Infantry seized another position, which enabled Run- die to drive the enemy off and occupy the high ground they had been holding. On Tuesday the Burns block, a two- story brick building with a white stone front, was burned down. The cold storage plant in the basement was ruined. Loss of P. His arrival at Bloemfontein indicates that the second contingent will take part, in the movement toward Pretoria, which has probably commenced. Mackintosh Meetings Turn Out to Be Largely in Favor of CurtisGreenwood Martinism a Surprise. On Turstlay evening, 19th inst., a coterie of Mackintosh supporters arrived in Greenwood and proceeded to Phoe nix, where they addressed the electors iu Miners' Union hall. VV. B, Cochrane took the chair. The first speaker was Alexander Sharpe, who endeavored to tell of some gootl that Mackintosh Inn!, at some time, done for Canada, and of the harm that Joe Martin would do if he were elected. Mr. Sharpe failed to take the meeting by storm. Mr. R. B. Kerr was the next speaker, antl in a vigorous address pointed out to the satisfaction of the audience that the Mackintosh platform was made of weak scantling unevenly distributed, Mr. Kerr was logical in his address and met. with a hearty reception from the audience. Mayor Goodeve of Rossland made the last speech of the evening and received good attention. His effortH to find a reason for defeating Smith Curtis and electing C. II. Mackintosh were well received but not heartily seconded by the audience. Mr. Goodeve owned up that he, personally, was not in favor of the eight-hour law, but since it had been passed he would stay by it. The speaker was in good form, and made a very good speechconsidering the subject. The meeting closed with cheers for the Queen and Mackintosh. On Friday evening at (ireeuwooil the same speakers, accompanied by Dr, Bowes and I). B. Bogle, addressed a crowded meeting in Miller's hall Acting Mayor Sutherland occupied the chair. The addresses of Messrs. Sharpe ami Goodeve were upon the same lines as at Phoenix, both claiming that Martin was an incompetent and erratic legislator, and a menace to the province. R. B. Kerr made the speech of the evening. He scored Dr. Bowes, who preceded him, again and again, much to the delight of the audience Mr. D. B. Bogle, who, it is claimed, would not have refused the nomination himself, made a short address, but the audience did not appear to take him seriously and be desisted from extended arguments. Mayor Goodeve lowered himself in the estimation of bis hearers by claiming that the Hon. Smith Curtis only offered his services in the settlement of the labor trouble because his expenses were paid anil he was fishing for votes. The meeting closed with cheers for Mr. Mackintosh and counter cheers for Hon. Mr. Curtis. Boer Army numbers 80,000. The Lorenzo Martinez correspondent of the London Times, under date of the 21st, says: "Information from responsible sources show that one time the republicans had 105,000 men in the field, including the colonial rebels. According to the same information they can still muster 80,000, of which 50,000 are in the Free State, 10,000 in the Uiggars- berg district, ami 15,000 iu the district, of Fourteen Streams, it is now believed that before the war the burgher lists were deliberately falsified in order to deceive the Britisli intelligence department." Offer of Bonus Declined. The Slocan Ore Purchasing company would not accept the bonus offered them by the Greenwood City council for the establishment of an ore sampler in the city. The council's offer of 50 cents per ton for the first 10,000 tons of ore crushed was very liberal; and the ac-' tion of the company proves conclusively that they were out with the "big mit" for the cash, and had not the necessary financial backing nor the inclination to carry on such an enterprise. The city i quit ahead of the game. Grand Ball. The citizens' band, Greenwood, will give a Queen's birthday ball on May 24th in Miller's hall. Early in the evening an open air concert will be given in front of the hall. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. Tickets, per couple, | $1.50. Cricket. A large number of cricket enthusiasts met in the Bank of Montreal rooms on Saturday last and the following ollicers elected: President, F. J. Finucane; first vice president, Robt. Wood; second vice president, James Anderson; secretary-treasurer, F. Lewin; executive committee, P. P. Sharpe, Ronald Harris, C. Hodges and C. VV. Chesterton. Anyone wishing to become a member should communicate with the secretary. Mulches will be arranged with teams from surrounding towns. For Mafekine's Relief. A despatch from London, April 24th, says: "TheCape Town correspondent of the Daily Mail says General Carring- ton's force is the only one going to the relief of Mafeking. and that no force of any kind is pointing south. The Morning Post, commenting on the difficulty Lord Roberts is experiencing, assert* that there was great wisdom in arranging for a steady Mow of reinforcements. Kelly Got Loose. Ed Kelly, who was in the city lock-up preparatory to a trip to Kamloops for stealing tobacco from the C. P. R. freight sheds, got out of his temporary residence Tuesday night, and iB now,, doubtless, in the land of the free. It ie supposed that he was assisted from the outside. A crown grant has been issued, niter years of legal fighting, on the Legal Tender claim adjoining the Noble Five and Madison, and work will be starled on the property soon. It will be impossible to ship ore from the Enterprise for 15 days or more.
