Brock left for Toronto on Wednesday for a two months visit. A watch night service was held in the Methodist Chnrch on New Year's Eve. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Neilson of Beaver were visitors on Tuesdav. Mr. Neilson states that he is going to bring a rink of Beaverites down some day to show the Golden boys how to curl. E. A. ICimpton's four horse team with 7.400 pounds of freight en routs for Windermere, capsized over the bank a few miles out from Golden. The accident is said to have resulted owing to the bad state of the wagon road. Mrs. Capt. Gordon, of Golden, who has been in Calgary for some time preparing for an operation, underwent it this (Tuesday) morning, and although it was of a serious nature we are pleased to hear she is remiirkubly well after It. -Calgary Herald. Mr. Hewitt Bostock, M.P., arrived from Ottawa on Tuesday's No. 1, he spent ths day in town leaving on Wednesday morning for Kevelstoke. During his stay here Mr. Bostock wus Interviewed by the Town Committee on several important matters including "Aid from the Dominion Government for dyking purposes," "Surveying of Upper Columbia valley," "Telegraphic Cammunication with Fort Steele," and "Weekly Mail Service with the Upper Country." With reference to the first three subjects Mr, Bostock stated that he would give them his earnest attention and would see whut could be done with regard to them. As to the weekly mail service Mr. Bostock said the matter was practically settled and full particulars might bo expected in a few days. . , A Lang Distune* Order. Meisrs. Carson A Shore, whose fame for good saddles and first class supplies is well known the country over, have received a large order from Messrs. A. C. Brownrigg and Jack Stewart, two former Alberta boys, who are largely interested in freighting and other good paying investments in South Africa. The letter dates from Bulawayo, No- venilier 9l.h, and the order is-for several saddles and a long list of inlaid bits, plaited bridles, inlaid Mexican spurs, quirts, chains for bridle lines, and best silver conchas and rosettes for spurs and bridle���"quality, cost not considered." The writer says that they are doing a good business, as also are the Brownrigg Bros., and in closing intimates that thev all wish to be remembered to old ffiends around Calgary. The Christmas Tree for the children of the town took place on New Year's Eve and was a brilliant success, The ladies who had the management of the entertainment and the training of the children are to be complimented on the success oi their efforts. The entertainment commenced at 7:80, the audience being large and appreciative. The various numbers on the programme which consisted of songs, recitations, dialogues, etc., were performed by the children in a most creditable manner. The Tree, the principal part of tbe entertainment, was moit artistically decorated and was literally loaded with presents for the youngsters. Mr. F. C. Lang made a model Santa Claus und cnir.e down the chimney, which had been erected on the platform, iu a unique mannor. borne of the bigger children were presented with gifts much to the amusement of the audience. Santa Claus was rewarded for his services, being presented with a miniature of himself in everyday lire. The evening's entertainment wound up with a dance which was entered into heartily by both young and old. A few minutes before midnight the entire company termed a large circle aud danced the old yenr out and the new year in. New Orleans, Deo. 27.-The Daily Item's Birmingham special says: One of the most disastrous railway wrebks that has ever taken place in this state occurred at 8:30 this morning on the Birmingham Mineral railwuy, a loop road that extends all over this section, taking in the mines and furnaces. The wreck occurred at what is known as theCahaba bridge, flfty miles from Birmingham, between Guerney and Blockton. The bridge is about 1,000 feet long and 90 to 100 feet high. The train jumped the track from some cause unknown, and plunged off the trestle to the rocks below. As to the number of passengers on board, reports conflict, the best obtainable information placing the number at thirty to thirty-live. Seven were taken out alive, bnt in a dying condition. The wreck taught fire and many victims were burned to death. The scene of wreck presented a most heart-rending aud sickening spectacle. The cars were smashed to splinters on the rocks fully one hundred feet below 'he track from which tbe train had been hurled. The groans of the injured aud lamentations of those who were crowded around were pitiable in the extreme. Physicians from Birmingham and adjacent villages were sent to the wreck and rendered efficient service in endeavoring to alleviate the suffering of those who escaped with their lives, Winter Holiday Number.
