It is surprising that a mean woman and a very good woman can belong to the same sex. The local dog license is now due. Persons owning dogs are requested to pay the half yearly fee. The annual fee is: Dogs, $2 ; hitches, S3. Mr. Jas. Elder, Fourth street, is confined to the house with a slight attack ol pleurisy. Clias. Mee, of Moodyville, has returned from Norfolk, Va.. where he attended the big convention ol the Fraternal Order of Fagles. He was honored there with a position on lhe credential committee. There were 1,587 duly cre- dentialed delegates, besides some thousands of visitors. The parade was one of the largest ever held in the United States. Thc weather was sweltering. There were twelve delegates from Canada. The convention meets next year at Seattle. Mr. Mee said he was glad to get home, that after all there is no place like British Columbia. When a man makes a serious mistake it weakens his nerve and lessens his confidence in himself. Go to an old-fashioned person for comfort and you will learn that you are seeing your best days. A very distinguished party from Calgary spent a few pleasant hours in the Ambitious City on Tuesday,' and stopped at Hotel North Vancouver, Following were those registered: Hon. Jas. Smart, 21b pounds, good health; II. E. Gillis, t.So pounds, good health; G. II. Mitchell, 180 pounds, lull weight; S. IC. English, 302 pounds, baseball lan; A. Mr. and Mrs. Coleninn and daughter, Toronto, were guests of Mrs. Winters, Lonsdale avenue, on Wednesday. Mr. Coleman has not been in liriiish Columbia for nineteen years, and naturally was agreeably surprised at the growth ol the place. Avon Raton, London, Eng., who is on a trip around the world, was a visitor in North Vancouver on Wednesday. Mr. J. J. Miller and family, who have heen on an extended trip In Eastern Canada and United States, arrived back to Nortli Vancouver Sunday evening. They had a most enjoyable trip, notwithstnnd* the fact thai Mrs. Miller suffered considerably from pneumonia and neuralgia. North Vancouver, Mr. Miller says, is good enough lor lum. He is now chief clerk of the mileage of the Western Passenger Association. Several new residences are in the course of erection in Lynn Valley, snd settlers are arriving daily. Owing to the recent heavy rains a large number ol bolts lying in Rice lake, over 6,000 cords, are now finding their way to the inlet through the flume at the rate ol over 200 cords per day, under the capable loremanship ol Mr. Davidson. School Inspector Stewart visited Lynn Valley Tuesday on official business, where he looked over the sight of the proposed new school house. As regards the sight, and also the attendance he was ninth impressed. Accompanied hy Councillor McNaught he visited the Capilano district, where application had heen made for a new school Owing to there not being the requisite number of white children the government could not erect a school building, hut a proposition was made to lhe government through the inspector by the school trustees, whereby it is proposed that Iha municipality erect a school building according to government plans, the lalter to refund the cost of the building when thc required number of scholars are on the school roll. But in any event the inspector will recommend the usual grant being given for a Capilano school. Most people will make any sacrifice to gratify their fool streak. It ha-- been suggested that a local mutual improvement and de- hating club be formed. This is the proper time to arrange the same. All the young men should take a deep interest in the proposition. Larson's pavilion was prettily fes tooned with bunting and Hags and the colors ol the club, while at each end ol the hall were the emblems of victory and defeat the oarn. At 8:30 the dreamy music hurst forth in waltz time, when the merry-makers began the evening's enjoyment, one that is not soon to be forgotten by those in attendance. The well selected program ol waltzes, two-steps, three steps, three-steps, lancers, etc., was forgotten at midnight, when the announcement was made that refreshment time had arrived. Mr. and Mrs. P. Larson excelled themselves in the bounteous spread which they had prepared, and the boating club is to be congratulated on tlieir choice of host and hostess. Hall past one saw the close, when late cars conveyed the North Vancouverites to their homes, and the lerry boat took away the large number of visitors from ahord. Sir,—An explanation is due to the citizens regarding abandonment i.f the exhibition lor this year. It was deemed indispensihle to had' a permanent building lor the exhibition, and to provide this it was necessary to raise a loan. The institute as constituted had no borrowing powers, hence it had to be reincorporated as a Horti- ultttral Association. The steps necessary to carry this out took some time, and a serious delay arose al Victoria, hence it was only last month that action was possible. A loan ol fa,000 has heen arranged and plans ol a pavilion are now being adjusted, but thc building itself cannot possibly be erected for some time. When it is completed there will be some suitable exhibition or other demonstration, and everything will he in the best form for an early exhibition next year. We shall be glad to have the enrollment as members of many of our new citizens to give strength to the association. 1 am, yours truly, Alexander Smith, President, North Vancouver, Sebl j. 1007 Horses Have Humor Horses may have no souls but they have humor, which lor the practical purposes ol the world is sometimes quite good, and let no one doubt they enjoy it. Some time ago a fire horse that had been sold to a second hand furniture man was coming down thc street with a load when the signal gong rang in the engine house it just happened to pass. The old horse had been going at the pace of a nag that works by the day. But there was a change. The driver picked himself up to sec his steed disappearing around the corner al breakneck speed, with bureau drawers and chairs Hying out behind and littering the street. Away it went, like a meteor, ahead ol the lire brigade to the lite, picked out a hydrant and hacked what was hit ol the wagon up against it. Only then did il slop, lint il any doubter could have seen the grin on that horse's lace as it eyed its driver who cama panting up to claim it, he would have doubted no longer. \\ j-.limn iii ih.- i;.|.i.,ii.ii|.-, Innnodl- ilelj >■. 1 ..I l-onndnle avenue, 1- being ..in.ii*.1 from .1 plank in a graded a -a., * There 1- unit.' .1 dspnolon i'i Un' -'...1 .it tin* -|Bii .....I tii,. contour >.t tin' n n.i necouitatfa- quite a fill in, nhi'li 1 being mi.I. mill I'.iiih '..I. 111 li I.
