Judging from disclosures, scarcely any of the supplies for the army in South Africa have been purchased on business principles. Speculating contractors are now known to have made hundreds of thousands of pounds by reselling contracts. The Associated Press understands that the contract in question was first resold at £30, 000 premium and then at £40,000. Then Cecil Rhodes and the De Beers group handled over £200,000, and thus finally secured the privilege of securing the troops in South Africa fresh meat. These figures are likely to be shortly published here and when known will doubtless add fuel to the fire of indignation which threatens to center around the secretary of war, Mr. Broderick, as viciously as it did around Lord Lansdowne when the later was sponsor for the early bl Cinders o; tho wci. Box 606. D. G. MONROE, NEWS DEPOT, Stationery, Confeotionery, Tobaccos and Cigars; Phoenix, British Columbia Spokane, Feb.10.—(Special.) The Spokesman Review to-day says : "•Whitaker Wright is again on top in the Le Roi Company. By some of the most astounding financial work that has ever been seen in London, he has risen to victory from the depths of defeat. For the past year he has been under the fire of British courts, which have been looking into the methods which he has used in financing his various companies. The revelations which .came to light rivalled even- the sensational disclosure? after the crash in the Hooley Companies. Wright has been execrated on all sides. He has seemingly been discredited utterly. But Whitaker Wright is again in control !of the Le Roi. Henry Bratnober, who fought him in behalf of the same interests as are in the Exploration Company, has gone to defeat before the wily Wright. R. J. Frecheville who was made managing director of the Le Roi by the Bratnober faction after Wright was forced to resign from the place, is also marked for defeat. John McKenzie, who was put in ai manager of the Le Roi and Oscar Szontagh, who was made manager of the Northport smelter, by the Bratnober-Frechville interests, are to be thrown out. °ne of the most surprising features 01 thia new deal is the fact that Bernard Macdonald, former mine manager of the Le Roi at Rossland, will be reinstated as the Rossland manager. That is absolutely certain, He is on his way here now and will probably be in Spokane today. He bears letters from Wright which will put him absolutely at tbe head of the Le Roi affairs on this side of the water. The change may not take place immediately, but it will take place in the next six weeks. Frecheville, Mackenzie, Szontagh, all of them, give way, and Whitaker Wright and Bernard Macdonald will have full sway in the affairs of the Le Roi company. How did all thfs come about? waa asked of the Spokesman's in formant who replied. "I do not yet know. But I have positive assurance that the things i have told you are facts." The Spokesman Review has no personal knowledge of the reported victory of Wright and Macdonald. The man who is quoted, however, has in the past been in tbe closest touch with all moves connected with the Le Roi matter. On receiving the above startling ed to a criminal prosecution he is more likely, in the opinion of one of the "know nothings," to be in the jug than in the swim! It's a beautiful pipe dream anyway. ST. GEORGE'S CONCERT.v Program of the Mualcale to Be Held Thia Kveiitnff. The amateur talent of the city, „ „ as will be seen.is fully represented story a representative of the World, mthe Pr°gram which will be pre- _ ! apnt_.il .Lin _».._________. -1 ai. . _..__. immediately interviewed some of the gentleman in this city who are or who have been connected with the warring factions. Manager William Thompson laughed at the story but said it was by no means incredible. He however knew nothing abont tbe matter. He had received no advices, had heard nothing of Bernard Macdonald except that he was in England and would come out sooner or later. He pointed out that he had only to do with Le Roi No. 2 group, tbat Macdonald was the consulting engineer, bnt that if he was again consulting engineer of the Le R< i, stranger things had happened. Edwin Durant. declared that he knew nothing of the story. He had severed his connection with the Le Roi. Anyway he did not believe tbe telegram. He could. not conceiae how it could be true. Manager McKenzie staled he had nothing to Bay, but it is asserted tbat the story is utterly un- credited at the Le Roi. Generally speaking the local men are a crowd of know nothings but one of the number having the epithet applied to him exclaimed "Hang itl if there was anything to know why of course we would know." The general consensus of opinion is that seeing tbat Whitaker Wright has been posing as a poor man it is an unlikely thing that he would immediately blossom forth like a Rose of Jericho into a monied director. It would not have a good effect before the "dear English public." Moreover as that astute financier is still expos- sented this evening at the opera house for the benefit of St. George's church. Coast labor organizations are at last learning wisdom and are refusing to amalgamate with either of the old parties, preferring to cleave a line unto themselves. That is right. Up-country organizations have been doing it from the first, and the Foley campaign fully justified their actions. Labor men throughout the province now realize their power, and trje quiet but persistent efforts of the past six months have cemented all the organizations under the banner of tbe Independent Labor party. In their support, also, the growing power and influence of the Socialists is to be exercised, making a combination of voting strength that politicians view with feeling akin to alarm. Renewed life is pervading the independent ranks, because of the certainty of an early provincial election, the outcome of which will surely give the labor men representation of respectable dimensions in the house. They to fear from tho fair redistribution but increase their ^^^^^^^^ Politicians who are next to the situation say that a just redistribution measure to the Kootenays and Yale will result in at leas* eight labor men being elected to the legislature. That is no mere haphazard guess, but a careful summing up of the political situation.' The closer a politician can lay to the labor vote, the greater hiB chances for election.—Slocan Drill. The exact explanation of a "wide open policy" in municipal affairs is that the chief magistrate does not object to a quiet game of beggar my neighbor. Tbe intelligent Liberal may perhaps have observed tbat New Zealand is governed by the Labor- Liberal party. These ship ments, now amounting to six cr seven shiploads per month, are helping to develop commerce in agricultural products from Canada. Mr. Fisher minister of agriculture, sought permission from the Imperial War Office to carry suoh merchandise as Canadian manufacturers and merchants might want to send to South Africa on steamercharter- ed for cargoes for the war office.
