PORT ARTHUR BEING BELEAGUERED ANOTHER FURNACE Th* Hall Mine* Smelter I* Now Prospering Nelson, May 6—"Yee," said Manager Robert Hedley of the Hall Mines smelter yesterday. "I oan give you somo news of general interest here. We have decided to blow in the second furnaoe at the smelter tomorrow. We bave reoeived a fine consignment of concentrates from the Highland mine at Ainsworth—-about 320 tons- representing tbe shipment for April." Evidently the smelter in question is begining to feel the beneficial effects of the lead bounty in common with the rest of the community. As has been already stated, the shipment from the Highland mine is the largest ever sent out from that property in any single montb, and doubtless from this time on the output from the mineB to the north will steadily continue to increase. Fresh Landings Hade by the Japanese on Liautung Peninsula are Officially Confirmed. Tokio, May 6. It has been officially admitted that the Japanese have suooeeded in making good their landing on the Port Arthur peninsula between that point and the mouth of the Yalu, The exact whereabouts has not been given out although it is well understood tbat the landing is only supplemental to others that took plaoe last week whioh were made at two points on Liautung peninsula on tbe Korea bay side. The other landing which was reported on the side of tbe Gulf of Liautung, at the head of whioh is situated Newchwang and along the eastern shores of which 'uns the railway /rom Newohwang to Port Arthur is not confirmed officially, although it ie not denied. If true this weuld explain the reiterated rumors as to the landing of the Japanese near Newohwang, and also tbe persistent efforts to seal Port Arthur. The whole plan of campaign in mystery especially as far as Vladi vostok is conoerned. With regard to the southern portion of the theatre of war the various events explain tbe situation. The whole of Korea is in the bands of the Japanese who are also masters of tbe Yalu. The Russians have fal len back, not upon Port Arthur or on Newchwang, both of which manoeuvres would threaten the line of communication running north through Mukden and Kirin to Harbin on tbe wain line of tbe Transsiberian, but upon Mukden. By leaving the right strongly posted on the Yalu and swing* ing the centre and left forward so as to follow the Russians the Japs praotically out off Newohwang and Port Arthur from all communications with the main body of Ihe Russian army. These plaoes must be abandoned to their fate to be reduced at leisure by the Japanese who will bave them in the rear of their front and exposed to attack from the sea and from the various forces landed in security at strategetical points on the Liautung peninsula. The new base of tbe Japanese army would thus rest on the Yalu and on the river at Newohwang, where their fleet can bring them supplies. The people who are making molt noise are the faddists and really religious people framing up a new set of. commandments for themselves. The most important commandment is that of the Pro hibitionists, whioh is levelled against alcohol. Perhaps; the next ie against smoking, especially the olgarette, although the London Lanoet, the best known authority on medic_l matter deolares this to be the most inocuous form of tobacco using. There are stern decrees against dancing, Sabbath breaking, doing anything generally whioh everybody does not make a practice of doing, drinking coffee or tea, eating meat, eating anything, dancing, lawn tennis, or any other equally immoral or frivolous amusement (to the rigidly ■trict immoral and frivolous' mean the same thing). Generally an "unco* guid" faoe is set against everything that is natural except ■uoh little things as backbiting, slander, lying land covetousness. Torquemada would not be in it with some of these people had they their way.
