Langley Street Retribution on a Skull. Tbe following rather sensational episode by Hector Berlidz is worth reading. The only mistake tbe writer makes is in allowing the skull of tho unmusical monomaniac to perform so passive a part on ths stage. Berlidz's friend, Eugeuo Sue, would never have missed so fine an opportunity of making a thrilling climax to (he anecdote. He would at least have brought on the stage among tho ghostly characters introduced in Der Freyschutz, the spirit of tbe former owner of the skull :— " Wben Der Freyschntz was performed in Paris, I was young and enthusiastic— ob, enthusiastic a mourir. Weber took my heart by storm. I never heard such music ; it drove ine out of myself—it bewitched—it enthralled mo. There was then a young student in Paris, my bosom friend—his nrme was Eugene Suo. The world has sioce known him ; we both venerated, we both idolized tbo great Carl. Night after night we wero in the first row of tbe gallery. To us it was indeed Paradise We never missed a representation. But tastes differ, man ami. There was a fellow wbo came there as regularly as we; but when we applauded, he hissed—when we applauded, he Bnecred. The animal hissed and sneered at Carl Von Weber I Was it supportable t No ! Three times did I and Sue fall upon him vi et armis, and three times was he ejected from tbe shrine he profaned. Eh bien .' mais I* tempt march* toujours. Our first fervor for Der Freyschutz abated, but not our friendship. One night, years after, Sue came to me ; he was then in the Hotel Dieu. * Quess, my dear friend,' said ho, ' who has just died in my ward 1 A man witb a strange disease of the brain, producing distortion of tbe skull.' 'Eh bien, and what then ?' ' Why, the man js_(' ' Wbo Y ' The old unbeliever in Dir Freyschutz.' Again years passed over, and I bad forgotten about the matter. Sue was a great novelist. I had charge of tie Grand Opera. I determined to get up Der Freyschutz. The incantation scene was to be especially splendid. It was not until the last moment I found 1 wanted a skull. Off I sent to my old friend 8ue. The author had not forgotten the doctor, and his small cabinet of medical curiosities was at my service. 1 'lake that skull,' be said, ' but for Hoaven's sake bo careful of it.' Novcr was there a finer specimen of a raro die-. ease.' So off I went with ibe relic of mortality. Carefully did I placo in its position among vampires aud otIs and fitry serpents, and skeleton horses. It was not until the casting of the seven bullets bad commenced that a thought flashed upon me. The sknll! Gracious powers I It may be—it must be—it is— the sknll of the man who hissed Der Freyschutz 1 I flew around to Sue's box. I told him my thought, and he corroborated it. Marvellous the course of retributive justice. We leaned over the cushion, we gazed at tbe mute grinning basin of bone, and we said, as witb one voice,—' This is Der Freyschutz! The music of Carl Von Weber is thundering about you, and now, skull, hiss, hiss, biss if you can I'" that purpose. Instead, however, of doing* this tbe animal suddenly turued upon Mr. Mack, and, throwing his powerful paw on the head of the latter, produced a deep scalp wound, from which the blood instantly began to flow profusely, covering the face and clothes of tbe daring keeper with a crimson stream. Mr. Mack was completely taken by surprise, as tbis was the first occasion on which the panther hud dared to make an open attack, but qnickly recovering his self-possession, be struck bis furious assailant several severe blows with the butt end of a heavy whip which he usually carries about with him when going through his dangerous performances. Blinded and maddened with the blows of tbe whip, the panther let go bis hold and bounded round the cage in a frantic manner; then retiring to the further corner crouched d-iwn as if preparing for a spring, while bis gleaming eyes aud guping jaws, from which he cast the most terrible growls, showed plainly enough that had be been allowed to take bis leap, it would have closed forever tho career of tbe fcurloss lion tamer. But, happily, the latter followed up his advantage with energy and promptitude, and gave the animal such au unmerciful beating as fairly to cow the latter into an unwilliug and threatening submission. He compelled him to finish tbe performance so unexpectedly interrupted, nnd was loudl.v applauded by the audience on making bis exit from the exciting scene in which he bad shown so much cool daring and decision. It may be readily supposed that the visitors were wrought to tbe highest pitch of excitement during the time tbe affair lasted.—Dundee Courier. New Advertisement*. THE WILSON & MURRAY,! EVENING TELEGRAPH SHIPPING Fkmale Authors ' Do you really write for the pross V asked the captain of bis fair neighbor. ' You needn't look so alarmed,' answered she, laughing, 'it is only a spiteful invention of tbe old general to damage my cbances of getting married.' ' Js the pen so iuKurmoutitable an obstacle to the ring, that the lacy who uses it for any other purpose must never hope to sign ber marriage contract ?' inquired St. Gervais. ' So it would seem,' replied Ada. ' From tbe earliest time a woman wodded to letters has beeu compelled to renounce all hope of other espousals. Tbe beauty aud rank of Minerva in the court of Jupiter could not make any of the male deities overlook her intellectual superiority ; tbo Muses were old maids ; Sappho broke her neck in the hope of curing her heart, which was broken by man's neglect. Aspasio, I am afraid, was not a married woman ; and to come to more modern examples, Hannah Moore, Jane Po. ;er, Misses Picking, Austin, Strickland, Bremer, Pardoe, Costcllo, are notable proofs that a female, once ' convicted of literature,' may make up ber mind to solitary confinement for life in the world Bhe presumes to creste herself." "And yet," said St, Gervais, "it would be easy to draw up a list of married authoresses as long, if not ex» tending so far into antiquity, as yours of spinsters. Exciting Scene In a Menagerie, On Saturday, June 80th, an alarming incident occurred at Womb, veil's menagerie which is now visiting Dundee. The place was crowded to excess by visitors. During one of the performances, while tbe keeper, Mr. Muck, was causing tbe leopards and panthers, which are confined in a large caravan, to go through various evolutions, a large male panther suddenly showed unmistakable signs of insubordination. With the rest of his companions lie was ordered by tbe keeper to leap throuhg s large brass ring held up for A N»w and Gkano Erocii in Msdicini I— 1'r. Maggiel is ibe founder of a now Medical system. Tbe qaantitarians, whose vast internal doses enfeeble the stomach and paralyze tbe bowels, most give precedence to tne man who restores health and appetite, with from one to two of his extraordinary Pills, and cures the most virulent sores with a box or so ol his wonderful and all healing Salve. These two great specifics of the Doctors are fast superseding al) the stereotyped nostrums of the day. Extraordinary cure9 by Maggiel's Pills and Salvo have opened the eyes of the public to tho inefficiency of the (so called) remedies of others, and upon which people have so long blindly depended. Maggiel's Pills are no ot the claps that are swallowed by the dozen, and of which every box full taken creates an absolute necessity for another. 0o6 or two of Maggiel s Pills suffices to place the bowels in perfect order, tone the stomach, create an appetite, and render the spirits light and buoyant I There is no griping, and no reaction in the form of constipation. If the liver is affected, its functions are restored; and if tbe nervous system is feeble, it is invigorated. This last quality makes the medicines very desirable for the wants of delicate females. Ulcerous and eraptive diseases are literally extinguished by the disinfectant power of Maggiel's Salve. In fact, it is here announced that Maggiel's unions, Dyspeptic and Diarrhea Pills cure where all others fail. The Italian Generals- A letter from Florence says :—." Since nothing bnt war is now talked of, tbe following sketch of tbe principal Italian Generals may not be uninteresting. Gen. La Marmora is in person a tall thin man ; bis face displays a very decided nose, almost always surmounted by the fashionable princeoez. He has a passion for the military art, and is inflexible on all points of discipline. He does not understand any favoritism, and Victor Emmanuel says jestingly that 1 be has not credit enough to name a drummer in his own army.' After Gen. La Marmora tbo most conspicuous soldier is Gen. Cialdini ; be is a small, well- looking man, witb a quick and intelligent eye, wears a great moustache and a beard like the Chasseurs de Viucennes. He is the only individual of the Italian army to whom Gen. La Marmora permits this eccentricity, for he himself is moustached conformably to the regulations. Gen. Cialdini is very popular in Italy, and passes for a man of action and resource, well knowing how to win his men and give them all confidence. Tbe Italian army possesses two other superior generals, Durando and Delia Rocca. The former is a veteran of Italian Independence, and is esteemed by everybody; tbe latter, the first aide-de-camp to the King, is a man of about sixty, with white hair and moDsincbes; both bein'g very distinguished oiiicers." " Give me pore and unadulterated drugs," sajs Medicos, of tbe olden time, "and I will cure disease." In one sense, both of these learned pundits were the veriest charlatans. Tbey knew there was no place to rest their lever on, either to move the world or cure disease. Mechanism was in a backward state, and tbe medical profession was but another name for sorcery, and all tbe adjuncts of magic filters and charms of tba " evil eye," 4c. But these latter days have borne unto us something more than even superstition and its crow ever dreaml of io tbeir maddest philosophy. In these days of practical science, what was theory of yesterday ir fact to-day, and all the old lime notions become as babbles in tbe sun, and burst and break with every breath we draw. Let Archimedes shoulder his lever and we will find a resting place for it to move tbe world. Let mine ancient Medicus pant and toil no more for the drugs be so sorely needs, for we bare them at our band, ever ready to serve them at his beck. Refined in the laboratory of Dr. Magglel, tbe finest materials known In tho medical pro fession are obtainable bj any one. His Hilliou., Dyipeptie, and Diarrhoea Pills stand unrivalled, and bis Salve operates with magical effect upon burns, scalds, and all tores and ulcers of the skin. In fact, we think MaooiSL's Pillt and Salve are tbe wonder of this century, and we are happy in tbe thought that many others of our brethren of the craft sgree with us. We would earnestly counsel thai all families provide themselves with Dr. Maggiel's Prepaiations at once, and keep them ready at hand, to as to use them at tbe most opportune time and as occasion serves.— Valley Sentinel.
