MACDONALD Socialist Mclnnes Expresses Contempt for Regular Opposition- Gregory is Impossible. (Special to The Daily Canadian.) Grand Forks, Jan. 28.Another mass meeting of citizens gaihered in tbe opera house lasl. Saturday night, there being over 300 present This meeting was called by the Socialist candidate, Mr. John .Mclnnis, who was tbe first speaker. He attempted lu a feeble way to throw discredit on Ihe two old parties, and made an attack on lawyers. He statesl lhat lawyers in parliament would pass laws that Ihey did not understand themselves. Under his system of Socialism ull kinds of litigation woulsl be done away witli. Mr. E. Miller, the Conservative candidate, was next culleti on to speak. Mr. Miller was lu good fighting trim and replied to the Socialist's attack on lawyers in scathing ternia. lie said that If the Socialists would live up to what they preached they need not fear lawyers. He then in a most forcible manner scored J. A. Macdonald, tho leader of the opposition, for the cowardly manner in wlilcb he had, at. the meeting lbe night before, "when he, Miller, did not have a right of reply," made attacks upon his own as well as tho government's integrity. He further stated that he, Macdonald. had iu his Bpeech the night before, told only balf the truth In dealing with public Issues, such as ths> Kaien lslnud land ileal and others. Mr. Miller was loudly applaud* eil when he showed the audience that in their speeches tlle previous evening H. W. Gregory, tb" Liberal candidate, and J. A. Macdonald. Ihe leader of the opposition, had entirely disagreed on the Important questiou of railway subsidies, Mr. Gregory being against railway aid, while Mr. Macdonald said emphatically lhat he was in favor of aiding railways by bonuses. In conclusion Mr. Miller stated that tlle working men of today owed the existence of their tuber unions lo Sir John A. Mncdonald, as Sir John was recognized as the founder of these unions at the same time the great leader of tb" Conservative party in Canada (prolonged applause) before the time Sir John took the matter of labor organization in hand, men were locked up for striking. Mr. Miller finally concluded, amid shrieks of applauses. It is estimated that, this meeting gained over 100 votes for the Conservative candidate, al tho expense chiefly of III.* Liberal ranks, owing to the conflict of opinions regarding railway subsidies of .1. January 24. But few additional facts developed at the Inquest and Ihe motive of the crime still remains a mystery, unless, as the police assert, it, was the failure of an attempt to blackmail the merchant. The Bona and the old employees of the murdered man testified lhat. they had never seen or heard of Rayner before the day of the tragedy. A witness testified to the events Immediately prior to the shooting, and said he heard Rayner Bay to Mr, Whiteley, "Are you going to give way?" DICKEN OUT OF THE FIGHT. Fernie Liberal Candidate Hopelessly Beaten Already. (Special to The Dally Canadian.) Fenilo. Jan. 27.The Liberal cams- palgn In this riding has entirely collapsed. J. A. Dicken, and by Mr. Fisher, a young lawyer. W. II. Moore, the Socialist candidate, was present and got a good hearing. He devoted his time to an nltack on W. It. Ross, frankly giving as his reason for so doing that he had nothing to fear from the Liberal candidate. All efforts to elect Dicken are now openly abandoned, lt ls well known here now that when W. W. n. Mclnnes waa here before nomination day, he begged Dicken to withdraw In favor of a stronger man. Dicken refused nnd the whole party condemns and resents hla refusal. lis. HARVEY News of Liberal -Collapse in Cranbrook ConfirmedDr. King Has Neither Strength Ror Hope. (Special to The Dally Canadian.) Cranbrook, Jan. 28.The following telegram was received today by Mr. J. A. Harvey from Premier McBride: "Victoria, Jan. 27.Have Just completed a most successful campaign tour. The organization throughout ls ln splendid condition. 1 can safely report tbat the countryis with us and our return by an overwhelming majority ls assured. In the country's Interest tbe party must leave nothing undone to make the victory most decisive. British Columbia must not tolerate Ottawa's interference in local affairs." The premier strikes a dominant note that will echo from soul to soul through the province when he demands that Ottawa keep Its hands off British Columbian politics. He rightly estimates the general situation. Here in Cranbrook the fight Ib going hour by hour against Dr. King, who is personally a most worthy and estimable gentleman, most deservedly popular with all classes, but whoso campaign has beeu ruined, root abd branch, by those associated with hjm. Those meu know they have bungled and blundered and are falling Into, worse bungles and blunders as the tight tightens upon them. The statement that Dr. King admitted the hope- lesBness of bis campaign which appeared ln The Dally Canadian of the 20th instant waB, as anticipated, furiously contradicted In The Dally News of yesterday. Today. Mr. James Finlay, mayor of Cranbrook, over his own hand proves the admission up to tbe hilt and beyond it. The greater the truth the greater tho libel, and the bitterness thereof. "They have faith in their cause and their candidate," Bays The Daily News of yesterday. If thoy have It ls more than t heir candidate possesses and more than t hey possess, if they dared speak the truth. Nothing sines- the date of the classic satire of the devil rebuking sin can surpass the simulation of hi.h- anger and pious grief of The Dally News and Its correspondent that the truth should be spoken. They moat unwisely thought that the statement coulsl 'lot er would not be corroborated and took a long chance that the contradiction would pasB. The public proof of the fact has laid them by the heels. Let the public weigh the fact against the froth of a futile denial and let the fact be repeated that Dr. King is out of lt. A proposal was made Saturday night to the Conservative committee through Its chairman, 11. S. Lennie, lor a joint meeting in the opera house Tuesday evening, with Mayor Gillett in the chair, and no speakers except the candidates. The proposal came from the Socialists. NO UNSEEMLY HASTE. Trial Beginning Today for Murder Committed a Year Ago. lllverliend, L. I., .Ian. 28.The unusual spectacle of a wife appearing as one of the chief witnesses against her husband will be witnessed In the supreme court here when Ln*. .1. W. Simpson, a prominent dentist, goes on trial [or his life before Justice Kelly. The trial will begin today. Mrs. Simpson who is one of the principal witnesses for the prosecution, was not an eyewitness to the shooting, but was one of the first persons to reach the side o? her stricken father, and also a witness to events immediately preceding the shooting. Dr. Simpson is accused oT having deliberately shot his father* in-law, Hartley Horner, on December 25, 11105, in the kitchen of the Horner home at Northport. L. I. Horner ls said lo have frequently rebuked his son-in-law for alleged habits. Homer, It Is said, had prepared the draft of a will in which he was to have left his property to his wife and daughter in such a way that Simpson could never have the handling of any part of It. The will was to have been finally drawn np and signed the day of Ihe shooting. The declared Intention of Horner to make such a will is ascribed as the motive for the crime. Dr. Simpson's defence will he that the gun was discharged accidentally, preparatory to cleaning it. The only witness of the shooting was Frank Wlsnewaki, a Polish stable boy, who became insane soon after the tragedy occurred and who cannot be called to testify at the trial. Gruesome Discovery. Pittsburg, Jan. 28.Albert, llouck found the body of his wife lying on a table in her room burned to a crisp when he returned home from work 'late last, night. The first police theory of accidental death was abandoned when It was discovered that nothing else ln the room was burned, not even the table on which the woman was found. When the woman's husband arrived home the doors were all locked and all the llghtu in the house were out and he was compelled to climb through n cellar window. SUFFOCATED BY AMMONIA.
