B, Vanilorbllt, {Omrllht use,) The salary of $6,000 received by a New j York coroner wonld never tempt some of j tho men who have held, or do hold, that ; position. Then are many ways In which the Coroner can add to hi* Income hy a little finessing; and, If the word of most of their brother politicians Is to be accepted, they are not alow In taking advantage of them. An Illustration or two may be found both suggestive and convincing. Late one night aeveral years ago, a prominent physician was called to the Anthony House, now the Broadway Hotel, at 894 Broadway. The hotel did not then possess a very savory reputation and was frequented by many people of questionable character. The physician found I a man lying unconscious on a cot In a baroly furnished room on the third floor. The early morning light that was struggling to dispel the gloom displayed * horrible Bight. The man was partly dressed and in the dim light the dootor conld see that he had been no stranger to dissipation. Bis teatura wen contracted ami a frown rested npon hi* brow. The skull waa fractured and then were mark, of blows upon hi* head *nd face. The knuckles of both hands wen raw and bloody, the skin having been rubbed or i beaten off. It was evident that a crime had been committed. ' The man was already In his death throes and beyond the power of saying iwho had been his assailant, In answer to his Inquiries tho doctor was told that tho man's name was John McDado. He {bad registered at the hotel two days before. He had been seen that night in the saloon on tho southeast corner of : Broadway nnd Thirteenth street-a notorious place. An hour or two later hlsbody was found hy a fireman In tho stable adjoining the engine house at Thirteenth street, near Fourth ovenne. Thodlstanco jfrom the hotel or the saloon to the stable twos very short and the body could easily have been carried there. ' Tho doctor made a close examination of the body nud bocamo convinced that the nan had been murdend. The Injuries he bad received were undoubtedly caused by blows, and could not havo resulted from a fall. The hotel peoplo Insisted Phot ho must have fallen down stairs while drunk and then have wandered into tho stnblo. The dootor saw that this (would have been a physical Impossibility, ale inquired among the guests and servants and soon learned enough of tbe puth to enable him to explain the crime nnd to know how it had been committed, finis was what ho learned! { While ln the saloon on the corner McDado met a woman with whom he ilrank several times. She accompanied ilm to the hotel. While then she was ■ecoRiiizeii by a former paramour, who et upon McDade. Tho lattor fought savagely, but the other man was joined hy Jrlcmls, who overpowered McDade. Thsy Ifted hiin bodily and endeavored to ihrow hlm over the balustrade. Ho flight hold of it and clung; to It for dear Ifc. Then they pounded him oo the face nd head and beat and bruised his kiiuck- until he was forced to let go. Ho iropped down one flight Into the hall lelow. His assassin, went dowu nud xamlned his body. Satisfied that howas one for and would never bo able to give u account of his Injuries, they carried bo body over to tho stahlo and deposited b there. The doctor wrote a letter to tho Coro- er'sofllco stating what he had learned nd requesting that ho be summoned as a rltness for the people at the Inquest, evcral days later ho was notified to ppear. He did so. Upon being called o tho witness stand ho started to testify a to how he hnd found the body and rhat had been tho result of his Investiga- ions. "Hon, slrl" lnterrnpted tho Coroner, when I want your opinions I will ask on for them, You answer the questions put to you, When was tho deceased i -hen you found hlm!" 4 "He was lying on a oot In * back nam *n tho third floor of the Anthony House, ■ut ho had been—" S "Silence, sir," thundered the Conner sain; "you confine your testimony to 'hat will answer my questions. He had R tract un at tho base of hi* skull, didn't ■**' "Yes; and bruises on hi* head and face. I 'he skin on his knuckles-—" i Again the Coroner interfered. He had, ' jr reasons best known to himself, ; etermlned to hush the matter np and he 1 uietly choked off tho doctor's testimony, 'ho dootor was told to step down and was uietly hustled out of thcroom. Nothing 'as ever heard of tho matter again. I When William H. Vanderbllt died Bioroner Messemer made tho examination tnd gave the official permit. His action Jiadohtm extremely unpopular with his 1 mfrercs, because ho had not at tho time 1 sen on duty and had taken npon himself J io task that, by agreement among the c mr Coroners, belonged to Coroner Ecu- ■Ad". The feeling against him wns -jiteusely hitter, aud but for tho prominence of the dead man's family It would ' ;ry probably havo resulted In a wrangle 'Jr tho possession of the body. It was [■.on common talk among tho politicians ""■'id newspaper men, who knew that tho p-.roner who waa then flnt had been Vill paid for not making himself too "Tlclous. "'"Mr. Vanderbllt died suddenly while Jauvorsing with President Garntt, of the P":iltlmore aud Ohio Railroad. That mado necessary to call In th. Coroner so as to •tain a burial permit. Seen Many Feraons Faa. Away. It is singular how small Is the proportion of persons who have witnessed tho closing sceno of the human tragedy, Even physicians do not seo their patients expiro so frequently ns would ho thought. But what they seo Is sufficient to strip death of Its consternations. Their prosenco at tho unmasking of the fancied monster prepares them for the tu- evltable. When their time comes they go at least resigned through the silent portal. They an no braver than others, but tbey have learned not to be scared at spectres. Very few men. In truth, are afraid to dlo when the point comes. Tbey do not, as may be supposed, relish tt, and they nro anxious as a rule, to live, so long as their chances an good ond they do not suffer. When suffering grows ncitto Miolr desire- dwarfs (few of us but prefer death to pain), and when they lose hope they yield themselves without a murmur, I have seen, I repeat, an extraordinary number of persons die, aud my observations and experience contradict the theories and opinions on the subject. At first I was surprised at the evidence of my own senses; afterward I was convinced that they revealed tho actual truth. I romember, though but a small boy at the time, the first man who passed nwny botore my eyes. Ho was patient, tranquil, philosophic, while conscious of his doom. X hnd expected him to' be terrified, to perish ln agony, and the circumstances mado aa Indelible impression on my budding mind. I have seen the last-moments of delicate, highly nervous women who would shriek at tho sight of a spider and who could not bear tho mention of death. Any one who had .known them would have thought that their closing scenes must have heen distressing. They longed to llvo in the beginning, but as they ebbed away and were conscious of the fact, pence and renunciation came to them. So herb ot a hundred fights conld have borne lingering Illness and Its end mon serenely.. Woinon, weak and timid as they seem, horrified as they often an, at the grim monarch while remote, are calm and Intrepid when he stands at their side. As ho advances to see them they do not blanch or sigh or complain. I havo wondered how persons who hnd appeared to ho afraid of everything would meet their fato, and yot they have met it with equal mind and becoming fortitude. —Junius Henri Browne, ln Forum. . OATMEAL OR NOT OATMEAL? An Attempt To Settle aa Important -Domestic Question, Ton can got all the opinion you want on both sides of a queition nowadays. Oatmeal had not long heen reputed to be a healthful food when some* physician alone to deny It and to assert that It produced dyspepsia. Allowance Is always to be made lo sueh a question for tbo variation ot llunum stomachs nnd constitutions, so thnt what may he pood food for one person may not bo for another, Tlio truth nbont oatmeal for the generality or persons (and they are the only persous you can apeak for) Is that If It la eaten lu only a partially cooked condition It Is uot healthful; and neither In Hour, corn meal and many other articles oi food. Indigestion, and acidity of stomach aro caused for some peoplo by tbe eating of sugar or other sweets on oatmeal, and tbey get tbo same effect If tliey eat theso sweets ou rice or bread, Cream, too, mny bo too much fat for a sensitive stomaeh.lt put on oatnieiil. In these cases It Is not the oatmeal, but either lta Insuflick-ut preparation or tbe addition of ou Improper food, that causes tbe stomach trouble. If a person will eat a moderate amount of oatmeal cooked and prepared as his needs may demand, there can be no question tbat It Is healthful, digestible and highly nutritious. CARRYING THEOANEORUMBRELLA. A Chapter of Instruction for the Youthful and Aspiring Dade* Tha accompanying will, I am confident, be of Interest to my readers of the Undo persuasion. It Is a serious matter this carrying the cane or umbrella wisely and well. It will be noted that the popular Impression tbat a cane should be curled gifasped with both hands und lu a "present arms" position la erroneous. It will also bo seen that tho elevation of tbo stick with ono hand so that the bead cornea lu exact line with the mouth, thus presenting an easy solution of what Is popularly known ns "nursing the cono ' Bad'* ie equally wrong. Yes, the Democrats were considerably snowed under, but thoy will not always remain beneath the snow. Let Republicans "beware the awful avalanche."— Whatcom Democrat. The lugubrious look on the faces of Republicans here last Wednesday, when they thought Harrison defeated, was quite in contrast to the happy, we'11-all-get-office expression they have sincoworn.—Whatcom Democrat, The union choir, which rendered such efficient service during Mr. Moody's meetings, will hold an open practice this evening in the Methodist Church. All lovers of Gospel song are invited to come, bringing their hymn books with them. It is rumored that another daily paper will shortly be started in Vancouver. A good livo liberal paper would probably bo tho best investment tho terminal city could make Opposition is tho life of newspapers and besides when a change of govern* ment comes its most blatant enemies will make friends with it.—Pic. ri-me.i. What does the Times mean? An accident happened at a sawmill near Blaine the other day, whoreby a man named Foster received painful injuries, including a broken leg. Dr. Hall, of this city, wus sent for, and he and an assistant went over the night before last, returning yesterday, and attended to the injured man, whom they left in as favorable a condition as possible under the circumstances. That curious phenomena called in Europe the spectre of the Brocken was observed here laat evening between (even and eight o'clock. Persona walking towards Sapperton saw themselves gitfintically reflected in the fog bank banning over the river, every movement of the body boing repeated by the enormous shadow of themselves. The scientific name for this phenomena is "anthelia." The gun with which Jones shot Durant, and which wns supposed to be unloaded was found, on inspection by Mr. Moresby, to contain a very heavy charge of powdwr and no less than 52 No. 1 (swan) shot Had this been discovered sooner it would have removed all chances of the prisoner escaping death, as the tnct of the gun being reloaded shows that Jones intended the second charge for someone else. About 0 o'clock last evunins;aChina* man* while greasing the log carriage at the Royal City Mills, met with an accident by which he lost four fingers. Tlio log was boing turned over and the unfortunate man happening to have one hand on the carriage at the time when tho timber rolJW ovor, tho four fingers of his left band were caught and ripped off. Tho sawyer who happuned to seo tho accident fainted and tell, severely injuring his forehead. Although siuco Mr. Moody's arrival In the city ho hns held eighteen meetings, yet tho interest in them is continually on the increase, with no indications of abatement. Last night, the weather being extremely disagreeable, the largo hall was comfortably filled. On Friday evening noxt Mr. Moody closes his gospel meetings in Seattle, and he will tako bis departure with the satisfaction of having accomplished much good, directly and indirectly.— Seattle Press, The AOominumlUwtrated tor Nor. 17 contains, as usual, a rare lot of illustrations. On Sunday night last a negro employed on the ship America, at Na* naimo, caused quite an excitement by attacking the captain and several of the crew with a large knife. The captain and second officer tried to capture tho unfortunate negro, but he evaded their efforts for some time. After several attempts to strike, tho negro, being close pressed, jumped overboard. The mate und some others procured a boat und followed. They finally captured their man, and were hauling him into the boat, when bo again tried to use the knife. His hand was seized, however, and lindinp further resistance useless, ho dropped the knife overboard, and allowed himself to be conveyed to prison. One of the seamen was severely wounded in the scrimmage, and the captain had a narrow escape, hia coat-sleeve being ripped oped by the negro in one of his lunges with tho knife. - -———♦■ ■***. * , i . The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says: "Last Saturday afternoon Marshal Finn received a telegram from the chief of polico of Portland to intercept nnd bold Mrs. Jacobs, a passenger for Victoria on tho Olympian. The marshal obeyed instructions and lodged the woman, together with her daughter, in the county jail. It seems that Mrs. Jacobsandher husband werein business in Portland and failed a short time ago, the firm of Wolf & Co. being a creditor. Her husband, it ia alleged, had already fled to Victoria, and his loving spouse was otl her way to join him,'with a neat Bum of money which belonged to their creditors. Smith, owners of the "Live Yank" claim on Snowsboe Creek, Cariboo, are in the city, and tho former will probably visit his home in Gait during the winter. Messrs, Anderson and Smith bought out Live Yank's olaim upon that old miner's death in 1881. lie had worked it for nearly twenty years, barely making a living by drifting on bed-rook. The purchasers put in hydraulic maohineiy and in 1886 had opened up the claim to pay dirt. Tho pay is scattered through tho ground for a depth of about forty feet, and to reach this several hundred feet of the surface had to bo washed off, Tho claim is now well opened up, and tho cloan-up for the year 1888 amounted to 308S ounces, or nearly $0,000. Two new members were elected. Mr. D. S. Curtis reported the result of tho city's interview with tho city council in connection with tho maintenance of regular steam communication with the North Arm, and the report waa considered satisfactory. A committee, consisting of Messrs. W. Wolfendeu, W. B. Townsend ond D. S. Curtis was appointed to act in conjunction with the city council in promoting this scheme, and a resolution was passed requesting the district representative to ask the federal government for a mail subBidy for this route. A resolution was also passed that a memorial be prepared asking the provincial government to have the road leading from this city to the North Arm repaired so as to be available for teams. Mr. Thos. Mowat, inspector of fisheries, who was present by invitation, addressed the board with reference to the new vessel to be constructed by the federal government for the exploration of the coast fishing grounds. Mr. D. Chiaholm, M.P., also addressed the board on various questions affecting the interests of the district, and made some suggestions for tho consideration of the board. The financial statement for the quarter showed receipts, $367; disbursements, 8415,10. The meeting adjourned at 0:50, **» I'o'lce Court* The police court proceedings this morning were somewhat moro animated than usual, the renson for this being tho presence of Mias Annie McKinney a native of the "ould dart," who was up on the charge of being drunk and disorderly on the streets. Miss McKinuey conducted her own case, and more successfully in all probability than if she had been defended by the most eminent legal talent. After tho evidence for tho prosecution had boon tajjen Miss McKinney opened her case, nnd so powerful and logical was her appeal that had tlio case been tried before "twelve good men and truo" they would havo given u verdict of "not guilty" without leaving the box. She said Westminster was n strange place and the people were altogether to particular. Previous to her arrival here she had never been the worse for liquor, and she attributed all her troubles to the villianous decoction called whiskey sold generally throughout the city. It was not to be compared with the native usquebaugh of "ould Ireland," of which a person might drink a barrel and feel none the worse. Miss McKinney concluded by telling his honor that if he would overlook this offence she would take the pledge and leave the city at 1 o'clock. His Honor with tears in his eyes, dismissed tho case nnd Annie departed smiling and happy aftor telling Mr. Atkinson he was "just as good as he looked." The sale of work at Herring's Opera House was continued last night and the attendance was much larger than in the afternoon, Owing to the large space occupied by the tents, standing room was at a premium, but in. spite of the crowd and confusion the best of good nature prevailed and everyone appeared to thoroughly enjoy thorn* selves. Tho presence of a dozen young men dressed in all sorts of costumes, from that of the Bulgarian bandit to tho Mexican greaser, added considerably lo the brilliance and confusion of the scene Shortly aftor 8 o'clock the Venerable Archdeacon Woods an- nonnccd the programme for the evening, commencing with "Fairy Voices" by the children. When the curtain lifted a pretty sight was presented to view. The stage was decorated on every side with evergreens and in the centre was a largo green covered chair or throne, on whioh sceptre in hand, stood little Mab Falding, queen of the fairies. Music, soft and low, was now heard and presently the sound of fairy voices came from the distance and gradually grew louder until a troop of 20 beautiful littlo fairies, wings and ull, tripped gleefully on to tbe stage. Round they went two by two circling the throne and singing a charming little sons, which fairly carried the audience by ttorm. An encore was loudly demanded and like good little fairies they responded to the call. The next feature on the programme was the "Gillie Cal him," or Sword Dance, by little Miss Muudie Charleson. This dance which is at once the most difficult and moat grace* ful of step dances, was perfectly performed by Miss Maudio, and many persons preient, who from experience are well able to judge, say they neyer saw the "Gillie Galium" more gracefully stepped. The audience insisted on aa encore and Miis Maudio gave the "Highland Fling," also a delightful performance. The fortune tolling booth, ably pro- tided over by Miss Higginson, was one of the chief attractions of the evening, and many an anxious young gentleman and lady took tho opportunity of glancing into tho misty and uncertain future. Tho sale of work was continued today and so well did the ladies do their duty that almost every article has been disposed of. To-night an entertainment by tho Gipsies will be given, and a pleasant couple of hours are promised to all who attond, Havo you tried Holloway s Corn Cure?
