We notice that a number of the leading towns of the interior are adopting the system of having a half-holiday each week. This is a step in the righl direction and there is no reason why the merchants of Cranlirook could not come lo some such conclusion, and give all one afternoon off each week to go sight seeing. Another item along Die same line is early (dosing on Saturday. Why can not Cranbrook stores close at 9.80 p, in. Saturdays as other places do. Tlio prosperity hinges entirely on the const ruction of tiie Kooteuay Central railway lo provide transportation for tho valley be tween Golden and Wardner. Of the 100 miles to be constructed only ten miles are yet under construction. The Dominion subsidy is Still In force, but a subsidy formerly guaranteed by the province was cancelled, and it would appear thai the ini mediate construction of the railway hinges nn tho revival of the provincial subsidy, We are not in favor of subsidies, bul there are special circumstances commuted wilh this particular line that would appear to warrant tiie renewal of the subsidy. The pick of tho lauds in the upper Colum iiia valley lielweeu Golden and Windermere were given as subsidies to railways In oilier parts of the province. Had those lands been available a sufficient area could have been granted from them to secure the construction of the railway, but since the province has used I lies; lauds for purposes in no way beneficial to East. Kootenay Ih'egoveriiinenl owes restitution to thai section and iu an better way can restitution be made lluiii by subsidizing this railway to an extent to secure immediate construction. The East Selkirk range is undoubtedly rich in mineral wealth and there are some well developed properties, but these are lying dormant for want of a railway. Ranch lauds have also been taken up and improved, bul at present there is no means of getting stock and produce to market iu the fall the time the farmer wants to sell as navigation then ceases on account of low water Many intending settlers, who like the district uud would otherwise prefer to settle there, are forced to pass it by on account of the lack of transportation all the year round. Orchards are being planted and Hie hardier kinds of fruit can bo raised with great success, imi again there is no means of getting this fruit to market just at the time it is ready for shipment. The pros perity of each part is important to the province as a whole and with the fads we have before us it appears the province would be Justified, Iml us a matter of compensation to llie district for misappropriation of ils lauds for other purposes grant to the Kootonay Central railway sufficient subsidy lo ensure the immediate construction of the railway in question, Explanation Wanted.
