No Advertising Accepted for First Page BEER BY THE GLASS WE ARE to have beer by the glass, in those polling divisions of British Col- bia which voted for beer by the glass. And so far as we can discover, thru' reading organs of public opinion since the mandate was issued, nobody wants it ex* cept the brewers who make it and those who expect to get licences to sell it. Nobody wants itwhat? After voting for it? Sure not; but why? ' We'll tell you why. Public opinion became so strong against the Liquor Control Act and the manner of its enforcement, that the Pow- ers-That-Be, our servants down in Victoria, elected by us and paid by us to do our will, had to hold out some sort of a top. So they held out beer by the glass. They did not give us a chance to vote en any other solution. That's why we voted for beer by the glass, although we didn't want it. Had they given us a chance to vote for the licenced bar we would have voted for that. We would vote for it now if we had the chance. In making this state ment, this paper believes it is speaking for a majority of the voters of B. C. Prohibition might be alright if it would work, but it will not work. For proof of this, look at what prohibition has not accomplished in the United States. Kansas has had prohibition for fifty (years. The other day we picked up a Kansas paper, and out of curiosity glanced through the court docket. More than half of the cases were charges brought against men and women for bootlegging and moonshining. Government Control, even as it is operated in British Columbia, is far preferable to prohibition as it is operated in the United States; but Government Control is a farce. To make money out of the booze business, the Government charges $4 for a bottle of draft whiskey that used to cost $1 at the frontier bars. They divide the profits with the municipalities and then pull part of the profits back for "law enforcement," even places where there have been no convictions being mulcted in this manner. Space forbids going into details regarding this rotten game. There is only one solution to the liquor question. That is the licenced bar. The country papers can force this if they are not afraid to come out in the open and the sooner they declare themselves, the sooner will common sense rule in British Columbia. f- *!H ..,.' CARMAN'S GENERAL STORE fl_ Groceries Batdware Men's Clothing Po^cjer - Fuse - Caps SALMON RIVER BANKING COMPANY HYDER, ALASKA (Incorporated Under tho Laws of Alaska) 4 PER CENT Paid on Savings Bank Accounts Canadian Funds Accepted on Deposit. James Batterfield, special writer for the Vancouver Province, takes a fling at that social pariah and moral wreck, the stool pigeon, as follows: "Liquor legislation is merely a brave social experiment but the mutnal confidence between man and man is the foundation and basis of all human intercourse. Therefore the stool pigeon commits an actual and irretrievable crime against the soul of all humanity when he violates that confidence in order to obtain evidence of a technical crime against a code that may be altered at the will of a very small portion of humanity." International Electric Company Local Stocks During Cite past week Dunwell dropped considerably with very little demand,; - Glacier Creek, after the Spt&t ^caused by the Dunwell meeting dropped back, with no \\oi\\ demand. This stock is looked upon as a good buy at present prices. B. C. Silver is causing some excitement; heavy demand for this stock Is continually coming in from the south; various rumors are in circulation which, when boiled down, indicate that good ore has been encountered in the mine. News from the Victoria Mines, that a dyke similar to the Dunwell dyke had been encountered, caused a heavy demand for the tail end of the 50 cent treasury issue, which was quickly cleaned up. The demand for the treasury issue of Porter Idaho Mining Co. is good, and it is expected that this issue will soon be disposed of. N?ws brought in hy Manager Heywood ef the Terminus Mines that they were in ore, greatly enhanced the value of the stock. L&L Glacier Creek continues to hold the floor on active trading.
