He was self-taught and worked with his father, J. E. H. MacDonald, some of whose work is also in the UBC Bookplate collection (see, for example, BP MUR CAN P G736). Due to colour blindness, Thoreau MacDonald mainly worked in black and white. Some of his illustrations are available in various publications from the UBC Library. For other bookplates by Thoreau MacDonald in the UBC collections, see BP GEN CAN P B633 and BP GEN SL P E955. The bookplate, BP GEN CAN P B633, commissioned by Mary Katharine Black features a very similar rising/setting sun design. This bookplate, designed for the Hamilton book collector, Hope Holmested, is based off a sketch housed in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library. This bookplate was awarded a prize at the 1926 International Bookplate Exhibition in San Francisco.
