UBC Library welcomes film collection on B.C. environment One of the largest private film collections in Canada, which provides a fascinating document of rural B.C., will be housed and preserved by UBC Library thanks to a generous donation from the Halleran family and the support of community partners including Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). The Halleran Collection, valued at $750,000, consists of about 250 nature-oriented video programs produced in British Columbia over the decades – first by Mike Halleran and then by his son Terry. These shows, known collectively as the Westland series, were broadcast by the Knowledge Network from 1984 to 2007. They examine a broad range of issues associated with forestry, fresh water fishing, endangered species and ecosystem restoration. University Archives staff have begun preparing an inventory to enable access to the Halleran Collection. Please view the press release for more information. Fisheries portal wins UBC Library’s Research Award Three members of UBC’s Fisheries Centre are the 2012 recipients of UBC Library’s Innovative Dissemination of Research Award. The submission from Dr. Dirk Zeller, Mr. Ar’ash Tavakolie and Dr. Daniel Pauly highlighted The Sea Around Us Project portal (www.seaaroundus.org). This innovative project aims to assess, document and communicate the impact of fisheries on the world’s marine ecosystems, and propose measures to ensure globally sustainable fisheries. Each month, thousands of people access the user- friendly Sea Around Us portal, which provides detailed information from 1950 onward about the world’s fisheries, including the catch and its value, fisheries subsidies and more. All data are global, but can be analyzed by region or country. Maps and figures of the data are also provided so that users can understand the data quickly. As a result, the project portal and databases have become a major source of fisheries information for scientists, environmental conservationists and many intergovernmental agencies around the world. The award winners were formally recognized by Ingrid Parent, UBC’s University Librarian, at the Celebrate Research Awards Gala on March 8, 2012. The UBC Library Innovative Dissemination of Research Award honours UBC faculty, staff and students who expand the boundaries of research through the creative use of new tools and technologies. For more on the award, please visit Scholarly Communications @ UBC. Retell, Rethink, Recover at UBC Library One year after a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, UBC Library is commemorating the March event with a multifaceted exhibition. Retell, Rethink, Recover, which runs through April, consists of three phases on display in different parts of the Library system. The Retell section highlights disaster prints and historical maps. All materials are from the Library’s exceptional Tokugawa maps BCLA Browser: Linking the Library Landscape Volume 4, no. 2 (2012) http://bclabrowser.ca ISSN 1918-6118 collection, housed at Rare Books and Special Collections (RBSC). Rethink includes materials gathered from members of the UBC community who were in Japan during the disasters, or otherwise impacted. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant incident is discussed, and photos and social media archives figure prominently. Recover features items from UBC’s Asian Library collection, as well as contributions from community members and alumni. This section highlights Japan’s history of recovering from adversity, and includes information on the support between Canada and Japan during times of crisis. A complementary display will also feature portraits of earthquake survivors, a project sponsored by the Japan Foundation and Shiseido, the cosmetics company. On March 10, a free one-day conference co- sponsored by UBC’s Department of Asian Studies, featured talks from scholars on Japan, and personal accounts from UBC students, faculty and alumni. Please visit the event site for more information. You can also read about the exhibition in the March issue of UBC Reports. Indigenous Knowledge at UBC An international meeting on Indigenous knowledge will be held at UBC’s First Nations House of Learning later this month. Indigenous Knowledges: Local Priorities, Global Contexts runs from April 12-14. The event marks the 2012 Presidential Programme for IFLA, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Ingrid Parent – President of IFLA and UBC’s University Librarian – will serve as the meeting’s host. The program includes distinguished speakers from around the world representing many viewpoints and interests. The objective of the event is to advance the understanding of traditional knowledge at local and international levels. Results will inform the development of legal instruments, policies and practices related to the organization of Indigenous and traditional knowledge around the world. Please visit the Indigenous Knowledges website for more information and to register. TLEF grant boosts Research Commons A new grant will help support the development of the Koerner Library Research Commons on the Vancouver campus. UBC Library, in collaboration with the University’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) and the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FOGS), was recently awarded a UBC Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) grant for 2012/13 to support the development of services and staffing for the Research Commons. The grant will provide funding to hire a team of graduate students from across disciplines to help rollout two new services in September: thesis formatting and citation support, and an interdisciplinary research discussion series. Many thanks to those at the Library, CTLT and FOGS for contributing to the grant application. If you’re interested in knowing more about this initiative, please contact Trish Rosseel, Interim Head, Humanities & Social Sciences Division, at trish.rosseel@ubc.ca.
