"The Tribune was published in Nelson, in the Central Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, and ran from November 1892 to November 1905. The Tribune was published and edited by John Houston, an outspoken journalist who would later embark on a successful political career, which included four terms as the mayor of Nelson and two terms in the provincial legislature. Houston had established the Miner in Nelson in 1890, and, after leaving the Miner in the summer of 1892, he established the Tribune to compete with his former paper. In August 1901, the title of the paper was changed to the Nelson Tribune."@en . ""@en . "https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/xtribune/items/1.0188887/source.json"@en . "application/pdf"@en . TO THE ELECTORS Of NELSON: At the request of n number of electors, I havo decided to offer raytolf ns a candidate for mayor at the coining civic elections. ' 1 believo that the city has valuable assets in Iho water and electric light systems, and while in the council I did everything possible to safeguard these assets; and if elected: mayor no act or voto of mino will bo in favor of allowiug any outside corporate interest-to become a competitor with the city in :lho business of electric lighting, a business in which the city has* already invested 570,000. While in the council in 1S9"; I voted in favor of incorporating a fair wage clause in all contracts'! and that principle was carried out in both letter and spirit. I see no reason to change my views on that question nd*wv: And I believe, further, that'with competent foremen and superintendence that the city can get as- good value for tho money spent by having the greatbulk of its work doho by day's labor as'.by the .contract system, and no good reason can, bo advanced why the city should notpay the same rato of wages and work men tho same number of hours as prevails in private enterprises. I nm in favor of giving Iho business nnd property interests every safeguard possible, and to that end I believe the fire department should bo mado as efficient as possible, consistent with the rovenuos of the ci'y. Nelson should be kept in advance of its rivals, and everything possible must be done to induce manufacturing enterprise * to locat*) here, for it is the payrolls that build up tho cities of today. Nelson, a western city, is as orderly and law abiding as eastern cities. This is because the people bf Nelson are tolerant. I believe that this spirit of toleration should.be continued, and I will if elcsted mayor do no act to abridge or curtail the rights or piivileges of one class of our citizens merely because another class may have different views.
