By virtue of legislation secured in tbe seventies the Grand Trunk maintains a Superantnuation and Provident Society, into which both company and employes pay. It is something of a. jug-handled Arrangement, for, on consideration of assistance to the society in the sum of ,*512,.\")00 per annuhi, fhe. company contracts itself outof liability for injury to employes. This immunity is no aiiiiiill item to a railway company employing 23,000 men. lCvery man who enters tho service becomes a member of the Provident Society, and signs an agreement renouncing all legal right to compensation for injuries received. The Grank Trunk Railway may well be satisfied to continue a system which for a few thousand dollars a year guarantees it against prosecution for. injuries through neglect or otherwise. What the emploves obtain, on the other hand, is a trifling return for the statutory rights they renounce. A sick man receives S3 a week for 2t> weeks; the permanently disabled $100 and the dcuLh claim is only $250. \"Nothing like thc benefits that other provident institutions confer,\" said Hugh Guthrie as he described the grievances of the employes of the Grand - Trunk. No other railway has secured such remarkable legislation, so that the Guthrie Bill will not be generally opposed by the uiilway interests of Canada. The legislative remedy which the member for South Wellington proposes in the bill is a simply one, He follows the outline of the Workmen's Compensation Act and places upon a railway company the obligation of proving the adequacy of its contribution to the benefit fund before claiming immunity Irom the common law which an injured employe might invoke. .T Cosgrove's Orchestra Under the allspices of the Irish Sociiil & Benevolent Society, Cos- grove's On-hesti a will appear in Ihe Opera House here on April 2nd.
