The new discoveries in the C.moe river district are. culling the attention of the outside public once more to the great, uiitier.il weal I h which lies awaiting the prospector north of the main line of the C.P.R. In this country the principal operations hitherto carried on are located from .Rovolstoke lo Goldstream, about Co niiias north up the Columbia. At this point occurs the famous district known as the Big Bend, which was a little more than 30 years ago the scene* of the* Big Bend stampede. Here froin tin; bed of ancient glacier, now fov.ts'r.g a series of cupped depressions on lbe mountains, known as Ground Hog Basin, rise French creek, lucCullougli"creek anil Camp creek, triliolaiies of Gold- stream. Ifc was-'on Fro'.iih and McCullough creeks that in "65 the great strikes in gold-hearing gravel wore made in this vicinity. The. work continued in the. crude methods available, in that rei'.ir.'i.c- region in those days. Enonr.O'.is remits were obtained until tha work becamo.* too expensive anil in '07 the mini'.- drifted off to the still more valuable and extensive placer grounds of Williams and' tightriitig* creedis in ' Cariboo.* Olher creeks in the district, such as Camp creek. Eight Mile creek and Ton Mile creek, were also worked to some extent, but owing to tlie greater depth to bedrock not iiiucli w.is done, though good results were obtnini'il on these* creeks also wherever the* gravels could be woiked liv ordinary gronnd- slnieitig. It is estimated Mint, livo and three millions in gold were laken out o.liieBig Bend from 'G5 lo '1)7. the. years ed' tbe stampede. Since then nothing was done until the G.P. railroad was built through the 'province in '85. when 11 few miners wont in from Ri'velstoke and began woik on Mi-erheaviorgiavi'l deposits nnd-ancietit- creok beds in all cases obtaining good pay dirt. But. the expenses of tunnelling wore very large and the profits siiinll. In 1889 a company obtained u lease on the lower end of McCullough creek and installed an hydraulic plant. Il was not very efficient or com pet "~nll.v bandied and only. 500 feet, of their ground on one bed -of the crook was gone over in the Hist year, in spile of all which their returns are stated lo have* been Siil'.OOO. The following spring a slide covered tlieir plant, and owing to a lack of funds and internal dissensions in lhe t.'iiiipniiy, the le-ase lay iinworki'd and dually lapsed. Not hing more wns in the way of hydraiilieking until two years ago when two Chicago companies acquired several lenses on French ground and shipped a very extensive plant to woik Iheir claims conjointly. -Last y.*.'i*' this plant, was installed late in July under California 11 inairigesnon!. Though lhey comnienfcd so late in the year, and owing I o various can*V-*s. only worked over a, small area of ground, and that amongst, the. timbers of old workings it, is claimed t Iiut lhey cleaned up $iS,0<_0. Both horo nml on McCullough creek the gold found on bedrock and in the lower gravels is coarse; frequent tests of the tailings failing to show any fine gold. Besides these leases there* is a large area of placei'deposits in this district suitable foi hydraulic working. On French creek, above the Consolatiem, a claim which will be found described further on, tliere are. four edaims which could be worked by giants. ' These claims have similar c-haracl eristics to the Consolation and should lie of equal value," which as will'be seen in tlie description of that claim is considerable. On Camp creek airain are several leases. This creek hni only a snow supply of water and the time of working would be short, but there is some ground near the head v. liich, even in the few months available, would p'iy well. Here at least one ancient glacial bed occurs about 11 mile's in length, and thosurface returns at, this point are very promising. On Eight. Mile creek there, is large amount of valuable ground. Bedrock is everywhere deep. Four ancient beds of this creek are indicated about throe, inilt~s from its mouth, two of whiih are glacial and two formed by the diversion of the creek to higher levels by slides. This slide matter is mostly formed of old glacial deposits carried down from the mountains above arid will yield about 25c. to the cubic yard. A few .claims were worked on the lower part of this creek in 'GG, but the bedrock was too deep for the methods then available to render them paying propositions. Above the French Creek Co.'s ground on French creek, the "Consolation," a creek claim has now been worked for the past six years by means of drifts and shafts with good results, bedrock gravels yielding on an average 2.50 per yard. The gold is very coarse; nuggets of a value of from $50 to !?75 having occurred. The total amount of gold taken out since this claim bas been worked in 1892 is $29.- (XX). The company has now I wo working shafts, SO foet deep with water "power hoist..and 1.G0O feet of tunneling, all thoroughly timbered. Every effort possible should be made by the people of Revelstoke to establish eoniniunieatioii with tho mouth of Canoe river. At present the trail from here norlh only runs as far as Goldslie.ini, leaving a gap of forty inile... This interval, as far as Tub jlll'UALD can make out, presents no obstacles to the easy ronslriiclioti of a. trail, and it. is ncce.-iiiry to tbo prospects of lhis place that il. should be built without further delay. With lbe absurdly iiiad"cpin(e piovision of $l.*i,(>lK! Hindi' I'or lhis riding it is going lo be a hard mutter to apply any of llii.- Mini for tin* purpose. There is, however, a nioelest little item, blushing among the estimates, which appropriates an amount, of !j'2,0()0 I'or another bridge! across Fish Creek. This bridge, eoiinecis I hi* end of lbe Fish Creek waggon road, when finished, with the townsite on the south side marked on Cory Menhenick's map in reel. In tbe opinion of most of the miners and prospectors inlerestad on that siele of Fish Creek this bridge is not only unnecessary, but will entail a positive* waste of money. Their interests, tbey say, would be best served by clevoling this appropriation of $2,- 000 to widening and completing lbe trail on the south side of Fish Cieek from Thomson's Landing to Pool Creek, which would give a shorter ami easier means of access to Iheir claims, and one which only in one place, about 10 feet wide, is in any danger from slides. In this way tlio money for fixing up the waggon road on the north side and ex lending it to meet the proposed bridge, an estimated amount of from $2,000 to $3,000. wliich will have to come out of the genera! appropriation, will be saved and might be applied on the trail from Coldstream to Canoe River. However. Tins Herald only puis this idea forward as a possible way out of the difficulty. The trail has got. to be built somehow, and if our local member and tin* government can figure on any olher method of raising the money to builel it. this place will be quite content. It is for the benefit of the whole province', and not only fur the advantage of Revelstoke, tbat this Canoe Rivet-dislrict should lie speedily opened up. lt, is described as a valley second to none in British Columbia, of wide extent, purl I v open meadows and partly timber, and admirably adapted for cattle raising and agriculture.
