THE I OWN OF FERGUSON OCCUPIES A VERY ENVIABLE POSITION IN THE CENTRE OF THE MINES' Mr. J. M. Robin-op. president of the Commonwealth Mining and. Development Co. of Canada, was in, town a few days ago on his way to Vancouver. To a Hekald man Mr. Robinson said it was the intention of his company to pnsh tbe development of the Ethel mineral claim which he bonded recently ab Trout Lake, And they would ship the high grade ore which will be taken out in the course of opening up {the mine. Mr. Robinson believes bis company has secured a most valuable property in the Ethol. It is a mine from the grass roots, he says, carrying values in gold, silver and copper, ranging from $70 to $2400 to the ton. Tho upper tunnel is only in 10 feet, but even from this prospect hole seven tons of high grade ore has been shipped and twice that amount of low grade stuff lies on the dump. While here Mr. Robinson received word from men working at the mine to the effect that the ore body had been discovered in a second tunnel 150 feet helow the upper one, and that the quality of the ore there is if anything better than that taken from the upper tunnel. The Commonwealth Mining Co. also own seven claims on the north fork of the Lardeau, upon which sufficient development work has been done to secure a. crown grant. Next spring further development will be done on these properties. While the head office of the company is at Peach- land, in the Okanagan valley, it is their intention to do business through the Imperial Bank here, this being the most convenient' banking point to Trout Lake. Speaking of tbe genernl outlook for the Trout Lake district Mr, Robinson said that when the railway made it- way into that district its interests would expand rapidly. It has already been demonstrated that there are large deposits of rich ore there and KOOTENAYJIAILWAYS From the Noison Economist) At the present moment the railway situation in British Columbia nays the British Columbia Review, of" London, England, is assuming an aspect which gives abundant promise of great extension in the near future. The New Lieut^Governor From The Calgary Herald According io our Ottawa telegrams the vacancy caused by Lieutenant Governor Cameron's: untimely death has been filled and the recipient of the honor is Mr. A. E. Forget. Whilo some surpise will be caused by the appointment it cannot be said that Mr. Forget will not fill the position acceptably. He is a western man, one of the oldest timers in the country, tocially a gentleman oC refinement and education, and Madame Forget will be a charming Governess. It may also be .aid that Mr. Forgct's intimate know ledge of Territorial affairi". obtained as clerk of the North West Council at j liattleford and later at Ilegina, as i Catholic member of the defunct Board | o[ Education, and as Indian Com- i missioner, duality him to assist the I Executive with useful advice. The 1 new Governor is a strong Liberal, a J Roman Catholic and a- genial anil .ourteous French gentleman. So much for Mr.' Forget personally. Tbo policy which dictated his appointment is another story. A new precedent has been established and iu our opinion not altogether a wise oue. Hitherto it has been the rule to select our Lieutenant Governors from the ranks of public men. successful or oherwlse. who while not necessarily attaining any particular pre-eminence In Parliament have at least rendered ome service to the political party .WW-"- happens at the time to be ln power. It Is true that Mr. Forget has done -"ervlce to the Liberal party ,Tr~~ valuable service. But it was done .while he was in,receipt of a considerable salary from the public purse. He was a government? employee, und if the same penalty for active partisanship had obtained under the late government as ts bo rigidly enforced by the present, Mr. Forget would, long ago have ceased to'-be a civil servant. In so signally rewarding partisanship _in_one__of_i is_^pjli_^ajsliwliilei_as signally punishingConservatives .or~the~ same offence the government has set a precedent that cannot be other than viciously demoralizing in its effects. For this reason, while cordially crediting Mr. Forget with all the virtues necessary to grace the gubernatorial throne The Herald has no hesitation In deprecating the initiation of a sy- tem which musr ultimately result in the prostitution of the civil service to political exigency. A New Robinson Crusoe London's popular sensation this Bummer, next to the Hooley scandals, has beon Louis do Rougcmont's story oT his adventures on a desert island, a story which if true puts De Foc'k completely in the shade. The story aSems to be unfinished, but wo aro loft to infer that Rougemont was compe l:d to leave the region, which, by the way, was off- the norlh west coast of Australia, without bringing his treasure. Ho claims to have lived among tkese peoplo 28 years. A ;fewXmonths ago Rougemont; having worked his way from New Zealand as a dock hand, arrived in Londo-i poor and friendless, and with only nn imperfect knowledge of English. He called at the Carlton Club, on Mr. Henniker Heaton, and received an introduction to Mr. W. G. Fitzgrrnld. editor of The Wide World Magazine. Then his.fortune was made, Sir Geo. Ncwnes, the great magazine publisher took up his cause and Rougemont soon became a London Hon. After a. few instalments of tho story had appeared, The Chronicle pub 1-hed a lettor signed "Australian," conceding that the story had a foundation in fact, but challenging some of the details.
