No 9\nASSOCIATION MEETING.\nThere was a good attendance at the meeting of\nthe Fort Steele Mining Association, last Saturday evening. At which the wants of the district, with retard to -o^ds, trails,.and bridges\nfor the ensuing year were Cully discussed. It\nwas decided that the Gold Commissioner should be\ncommunicated with, and a list forwarded to him;\nshowing in the opinion of the association\", how\nthe appropriations for the year 1890. for this\nportion of the district, ooUld be expended to\nthe best advantage. The first of importance,\nwas unanimously conceded to be the continuation\nof the St larys trail, considerable money ha3\nbeen already spent on this work, and but very\nlittle benefit can be reaped from it until the\nthe trail is pushed through to the watershed,\ntapping t'e mineral belt of Copper, Silver, Gold\n- and-lead, which extends for thirty miles along\nthe summit of the Purcell range, in the-vi-cin-\nity of the head waters of the St Mary's river\nand its tributaries. In this region there are\nat present over 75 claims staked off, the owners\nof whioh being heavily handicapped in conseque\nnoe of the difficulties in the way of getting in\nsupplies, which would in a great measure be done\naway with if the trail was oarried to .completion\nthrough the twenty miles which intervenes between the present terminus and the summit .therehy\naffording communication with the Kootenay river,\nat Port Steele,\nNo 2. A wangon road from Cranbrookf to the Moyea\nLakes by way of Palmers bar, to enable- the owners of the Moyea Lake group of mines to transport their ore to the Kootenay river for ship\nment, and also for the benefit of those parties\ninterested in mining on the upper portion of\nthe Moyea river and its b'-anohes. With regard to\nthis road, it was recommended that the owners of\nthe mines producing ore should '-ear the expense ,\nof construction, which should be refunded by\nthe Government, on the completion of the work,\nand the delivery of a certain agreed number of\ntons of ore, reify for shipment, on the banks,.\nof the Kootenay river.\nNo 3. For the cutting out of fallen timber and\nplacing bridges in proper repair on the Crow's ,\nNest trail, this is a most important highway, '\nbeing the oheif means of communication between I\nthis district, ,;nd the southern portion of\nAlberta, besides passing through the Coal fieldq\nof the Crow's Nest Coal \"o.\nNo 4 Grading a waggon road from the Bridge\nacross the St Marys to the top of the br-noh ,\noverlooking the river on the North side, to - !\noonnect the Counuyy surrounding the North Star\nand Sullivan groups of mines with the Kootenay,\nriver at Fort Steele during all seasons of the :\nyear, also for the convenience of the net tiers\nin the vicinity of Cherry and Luke Crooks.\nNo 5. Grading hill on waggon road to the R.C.\nMission.\nm\u00C2\u00BBlmmmmmmm\u00C2\u00BBmmmmmmmmmm-mmimmm mmmmmt , mi-<-\nNo 0 Repairing the old pack trail bridge\nacross Bull river, which is of great convenien\nce to those miners and prospectors who have\nmining interests in the vicinity.\nNo 7 Repairing and extending the Wild Horse trail\nin consequence of the num rous valuable discoveries of Gold quartq made in that section of\ncountry during the last season.\nNo 8 Diverting trunk road in the vicinity of\nBummers Plat, so as to do away with three miles\nof heavy hilly road.\nNo 9 Diverting the road on flat oppositeFort\nSteele, the property through which this road\npasses, having been laid out with lots and streets, the object is that the road should be\nmade so as to coincide with the survey thereby\naffording a much better approach to the bridge.\nNolO Continuation of Main waggon road from Bull\nriver south, so as to connect with the road at\nTobacco Plains, then there would be an uninterrupted highway from Golden on the C.P.R.R. to\nKalispel on the Groat Northern ' .'\u00E2\u0080\u00A2:. Other matters\nof interest wore discussed, the Secretary being\ninstructed to communicate with the Government\nand draw their attention to the inadequacy of the\npresent draw in the bridge across the river a<\nFort Steele in view of the large traffic which\nmay be expected on the river next season, the\npresent arrangment beside being diffioult to\nj manage is altogether too narrow to aooomodate the\nj boats that will be engaged in carrying ore next\ni summer, and if not attended to before the openinp\n(of navigation, the bridge may suffer serious in\n, jury or else one of the boats may meet with an\naccident while passing through the draw, if alio\ned to remain in its present \"onditlon, The Secretary was requested to write to the Attorney\nGeneral with regard to the inconvenience suffered\nby the residents in this section through the\nabsence of visits from a County Court Judge,surely the country is far enough advanced to entitle\nus to at least three visits a \"ear, as matters\nare at present anyone becoming en-raged in a law\n3Uitis obliged to go all the way to Donald,Kam-\nloopr, ,or Nelson, whioh makes it almost impossible\nfor a poor man to defend hi3 interests, should\nocoasion arise, and consequently be placed at the\nmercy of his wealthier opponent. Mow in the matter\nof a weekly mail for Port Steele, all that is j\nrequired of us is to state the actual condition\nof affairs to our M.P. in Just and forcible language, who will the place the matter 'ofore the proper\nauthorities, and our request will surely bo granted.\nPLACER MINING.\nSome time last fall, a shaft was sank to a depth\nof forty feet, on the property of the International Placer mining Co.on Wild Horse creek, finding\ngravel that paid as high as 75 v' to the pan, but\nas considerable water was encountered the company\nresolved to run a tunnel and tap what -as supposed to be the old channel, at a depth of thirty\nfeet, below the bottom of the shaft, and are now\nin 813 feet, having run through a bed of gravel\n90 feet in width.and some 70 feet in depth, this\ngravel would pay well worked by hydraulic mining,\nthe tunnel is now in what is thought to be the\nrim rack and will be continued-until the abandoned shaft is reached, we then may expect to hear\nof another excitement in filacer mining in the old\nWild Horse camp,\nTRANSPORTATION,\nji have reoeived a communication from Cap't B.W.\nJones, stating that his tender for the transportation of 3.000 tons of ore. had been accepted by\nthe Executive Committee of the North Star\nmine . Mr.Jones also 3tated that he would at\nonce commence the construction of a large steam\nboat and have it completed by the time that\nnavigation opened in the spring.
