"Devoted to the interests of the Boundary Mining District. The Phoenix Pioneer was published in Phoenix, in the Kootenay Boundary region of southern British Columbia, and ran from April 1898 to May 1916. The Pioneer was published by the Pioneer Publishing Company, which was managed by W. B. Wilcox (from 1899-1908) and Thomas Alfred Love (from 1908-1911). On August 12th, 1910, the headquarters of the Pioneer burned down, together with a large portion of the town of Phoenix itself, and the paper consequently suffered serious financial difficulties. On April 11th, 1911, the Pioneer was sold to Gilbert Kay, who published and edited the paper until May 1916. The paper was published under a variant title, the Phoenix Pioneer and Boundary Mining Journal, both from 1903-1910 and from 1911-1912."@en . ""@en . Messrs.' Stewart and Lambert have for several years attempted to work an hitherto unworked property but, though they had sufficient success to urge them on, they failed to make any very big clean up. To get to bed rock they had to put in a dam and divert the-jn'ain body of water for a hundred yards or so, and the difficulties resulting from this, such as the bursting of the dam and the breaking of the flume, took up so much time that little could be done in the short season. Last- winter however a number of Swedes run a tunnel through the solid rock ofthe canyon and this enabled the work to go on uninterruptedly. This summer bedrock was reached and a number of fair-sized nuggets were found and the pay was acknowledged to be satisfactory. The work is in the next and proceeding summ'jpi; a rich yield1 of coarse gold is to he expected. The new company which com /nenced work about a month ago is located near the \"residence of Mr. Holmes, and is going to work the ground which the old Gold Mining syndicate worked some years ago. This old syndicate under the management of Colonel Stevenson built an immense flume, four miles in length, to bring a force of water from up the creek. The syndicate worked the ground for a comparatively short time and now the present people are taking the claims in hand and are proposing to spend a considerable sum to prove up the ground. A small flume has been built by Messrs Jamisson and H. Holmes to convey the water from Holmes creek to the scene of operations. A large amount of the plant is already on the grotind. 3C ac - Amid all' the so-called prophecies anent this present war, not one is so pregnant with possibility as the one foreshadowing the hoisting of the British flag over the ancient city of Jerusalem. 1 'Phone 56- P. Roaming the mountains somewhere between Albert canyon and Illecillewaet, along the north-east fork of the canyon, is,one of the largest and most formidable of tha grizzly tribe. His tracks are of unusual size, and hunters who have caught sight of him estimate his weight at upwards of a thousand pounds. The extent of the German system of espionage may be gathered from the following story from the front. About a month before the commencement of war, a youtig German governess in the employ of a high government official in London, xvas discharged .under very suspicious circumstances, although no direct evidence could be produced against her. It was understood that she had . returned to her own-country, but a short time ago her late employer was surprised to receive a letter from his son, who is in the fighting line, informing him that he had seen the ex-governess, wearing a red cross badge, and officially attached to the staff of a British hospital.
