The Phoenix Pioneer was published in Phoenix, in the Kootenay Boundary region of southern British Columbia, and ran from April 1898 to May 1916. The Pioneer was published by the Pioneer Publishing Company, which was managed by W. B. Wilcox (from 1899-1908) and Thomas Alfred Love (from 1908-1911). On August 12th, 1910, the headquarters of the Pioneer burned down, together with a large portion of the town of Phoenix itself, and the paper consequently suffered serious financial difficulties. On April 11th, 1911, the Pioneer was sold to Gilbert Kay, who published and edited the paper until May 1916. The paper was published under a variant title, the Phoenix Pioneer and Boundary Mining Journal, both from 1903-1910 and from 1911-1912."@en . ""@en . P, R, finds that its increasing: boundary ore traffic requires more betterments, and then a spur or two is put in and,ah engine or two added to the motive power, to say nothing of a dozen or so additional ore dump cars. Under normal conditions, with a steady growth of ore shipments,;,these betterments must be put into effect about so often, and just now is one of tjiose times. Right furnaces In blast in the three Houndary smelters mean that about 3,000 tons of ore, more or less, must be moved daily, and the C. P. R., through its operating department, must do the moving, in order to gather in the upwards of a thousand dollars per day, directly and indirectly, from the ore freight. All of which snpplies the grease to make the wheels go 'round. To loqk into all these matters D,G; Ross, of Nelson, superintendent of the Kootenay-Boundary division of the C. P. li'.j came into Phoenix last Wednesday, being accompanied by M rs. Ross. Roudniftster Johnson also came up the hill with Mr. Ross,, and together with Wm; Yoien Williams they went over the Gianby minesthe result of which will be another long sidetrack at the Old Ironsides ore bins; besides other improvements in traekage facilities. While here Mr,; Ross and Mr. Johnson walked over the uncompleted portions of the Brooklyn and Stemwinder spurs with W. R., Williams of the Dominion Copper Co. About 4,000 feet of track are to be laid here, if some one does not change his mind. It will be settled in a few days, after McKenzie & Mann are communicated with, and also providing they do not forget all about it. In addition to this, one spur has already been laid to the Oro Denoro, and a second spur is being put down for that mine this week. Mr. Ross informed the Pioneer that the loop at Hartford Junction, built more than a year ago to do away with the switchback, but never used, will be put into commission shortly. The two powerful Shay engines are once more working on the I'hoenix hill, and a much heavier one still is expected to arrive from the makers at Lima, Ohio, in September, when it will help to handle the I'hoenix ore traffic. Mr. Ross brought his whole family with him on this trip, and they were quite comfortable in the unique private caboose formerly used by his predecessor. He returned , directly to Nel son Wednesday night, his car being attached to the regular passenger train. Will Use Four Horses. J. F. Rover, of Graiid Forks, proprietor of tlie Grand Forks, Phoenix and Greenwood stage line, which makes connections both ways with the Great Northern trains, a great accomodation to travellers generally, was in the city Wednesday and Thursday, having driven the Premier's "party over the Boundary. Mr. Rover states that, contrary to the expectations of many, the line is a success, so much so in fact, that he will make it a four horse line on the first of next month if he can secure a suitable stage in time. It is given out that the prospects of the promoters of Midway and Yernon railway soon receiving substantial aid towards construction from the Dominion government, are very favorable. Within the last month the Snowshoe mine also lias been using this power; which has cost $500,000 to equip and deliver in Phoenix, -A Arrangements have now been com- pleted, however,by which asecond smelter; the Mother Lode, will utilize this cheaper electric power, and discard the more expensive steam power, in use since the smelter first began operations, two or three years ago."; ' Last week S. S. Fowler, of Nelson general manager of the Cascade Water, Power & Light Co., was in Phoenix with Wm. Anderson, of Cascade, the superintending engineer, in connection with the extension of the company's powpr line to Greenwood and the Mother Lode smelter. It is understood that the contract for the clearing of the five mi les of right of : way required, and the erection and equipment of the pole line, has been awarded to Lome A. Campbell, of Rossland. The necessary surveys for the new line have already been completed, and the active work of construction will be begun shortly. In the course of a month or six vveeks thereafter the pole line can be completed if there are no delays on acconnt of lack of material. The substitution of electric for steam power at the Greenwood smelter is a long step towards the more economical reduction of Mother Lode ore, and it is believed that Manager Goodell, of the Sunset smelter, located three miles further down Boundary creek, will also have the same thing in mind in the near future especially as he is now putting in place a third furnace. Recent information from Fairview is to the effect that the New Fairview Corporation continues to employ between 60 and 70 men in its Stemwinder mine., . The third furnace has been received from Spokane at the Sunset smelter at Boundary Falls, and a force of men are now at work putting it in place. So far about ten cars of ore have been shipped from the dump of the Morrison mine, Deadwood camp, to the Mother Lode smelter. It is expected that about 1,000 tons will be shipped altogether. Last Saturday was the anniversary of the shipping of the first car of ore put of Phoenix, that event occurring July ir, 1900. .-Since.then the Granby mines have shipped a total of over 780,000 tons of ore. From the last car of ore from the E, P, U, mine p. W. McVicar received $3211 net, or an average of $ rid per ton. After paying all costs he'had $1200 clear.' There arc ten men employed on this property. Since eight furnaces have been in blast in Boundary smelters, requiring more men at the mines generally, there has been a scarcity of men for mine work. The quotas are gradually being made up, however. A claim near Eholt that is attracting attention is the Boulder, under lease to Mike Tebo. It has two shafts, 12 and 15 feet deep, all in ore, and the Qre body on the surface has been uncovered for r,30o feet in length. On the Queen of Sheba claim in Deadwood camp, Geo. Andrews is taking out some fine looking ore. He is now down to a depth of twenty-five feet in an incline shaft. The ore lies between two well defined walls of lime and porphyry and gives every indication of permanence. L. A. Smith of Anaconda, and Geo. Andrews own the property. POLITICAL POINTERS Tennis flames Saturday. The Phoenix tennis courts are now as good as any in the interior, being in almost perfect condition. Last Saturday Messrs. Mr. Green was also surprised with a purse. Tuesday Nurse Howell, of the staff of the Phoenix General Hospital, had the misfortune to slip on the front steps of the institution and break her collar bone. She will probably be laid up for two or three weeks. James Marshall has been selected as the delegate from Phoenix Aerie No. 158 to attend the provincial con vention of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, which will, he held at Victoria July 27th, 28th and 39th. At the meeting a delegate to the national convention at New York will be chosen. Preparing For Labor Day. At last Monday's meeting of the Phoenix Trades and I^ihor Council a committee was appointed to meet the city council and secure its cooperation in the celebration of Labor Day in I'hoenix this year, which occurs on Monday, Septenibr 7th. Tlie committee met the city council Wednesday evening, and it was decided to call a public meeting of citizens and business men, which will be held next Tuesday evening in the lower room in Miners' Union hall at eight o'clock, to consider the subject, and arrange for ways and means for the celebration, there is a general feeling that such a celebration should be held, and the Trades and l^abor council have fully decided to go on with it, but would prefer to work with all the people of the town in arranging the details. L'pwards of 400 names have been placed on the voters' list in Greenwood riding. As the Pioneer was going to press last night, the Liberal convention for Greenwood riding was being held. Premier McBride held conferences with the conservatives in Grand Forks Phoenix, Greenwood and Midway this week. The Phoenix Conservative Association has opened committee rooms in the old school house on Dominion avenue. It is asserted that over 275 voters have been registered in Phoenix already. The Phoenix vote at the last election was 167. Duncan Ross, of Greenwood, secretary of the Interior Liberal Council, is taking a trip into the Sirnilkameen, on an organizing tour. It is probable that the Liberal committees from the three associations in this riding will meet on July 20th, to arrange for a convention. The socialists have organized at Boundary Falls, and say they will do the same at Eholt, Mother Lode and Midway in the next two weeks. October 31.si has been set for election day. H. C Kerman is returning officer for this riding and George Cunningham for Greenwood ridiug. Hon. Richard McBride, premier of the province, visited Phoenix last Wednesday on a trip through the interior. His last visit here occurred about two years ago, when he was minister of mines, which position he shortly thereafter resigned. This time the first minister was quite naturally looking into the political situation, with an election in sight, and after going as far as East Kootenay, expressed himself as pleased with the prospects for the conservatives at the polls. The premier stopped in Grand Forks over Tuesday night, spending most of the next day in Phoenix; and then dtiving to Greenwood, leaving direct for the capital the next day.. He was accompanied by Wm. McNeill, assistant; commissioner of lands and works, the premier himself being the chief commissioner. ; The Pioneer man asked the premier the direct question as to whether the government intended to issue coal prospecting licenses for tracts on the much talked of two blocks of valuable land in East Kootenay. In replying to the question Mr. McBride made his position on this question quite clear. Nothing would be done in the matter until after election, for the excellent reason, the premier explained, that it was quite proper that the present administration should be endorsed by the people before tak ing action on such an important matter. In fact, he did not think any other course would be right. The premier stated that those who had acquired legal rights in East Kootenay should be protected in the exercise of the same. Hon. Green and Hon. Wilson, now in Ottawa, would insist on the allowance of Bill No. 16, which nullified the C. P. R.'s claim to the lands in dispute. And further than that, if the Dominion government should happen to disallow, Bill No. 16, it would be re-enacted by the' British Columbia government as often as it might be disallowed. Joint I. 0.0. F. Installation. Tuesday evening a joint installation of the Knights of Pythias lodges of Phoenix and Greenwood took place at the latter place, the installation officer being deputy grand master David Whiteside, of Grand Forks. Some 2-5 or 30 Pythians \yrnt down from Phoe- hix, and two were present from the Grand Forks lodge. After the cerem-, onies a supper was seaved to the visitors. In January a joint installation will be held in Phoenix. J. C. Poff, of Vancouver, representing the Sun Life, J. Bum Morgan, of Grand Forks, representing the Mutual .ife of New York, and L. M.
