SANDON, B.C., SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1902. $2.00 PER YEAR. Tliey Were Easy. Sandon Defeats the B. C. Champions of Nelson By 11 to 4. One of the best and faetest games of hockey-over played in Sandon was held .in the rink hero on Wednesday evening, when the Nelson hockey team, who are the champions of British Columbia, were vanquished by the Sandon team. There has been quite a controversy as to which team is really the better one. Sandon being defeated at the Rossland carnival by Nelson, the latter were thought to be by outsiders; but Sandon- iies who knew their team said otherwise. Nelson's men are heavier and may have a slight advantage in weight and endurance, but Sandon makes up ber deficiency in that line by scientific playing. After Wednesday's match the Silver City team greatly strengthened themselves in the minds of many, and who still think that if given a good sheet of ice and no favor, Sandon could beat Nelson on neutral ground. The game was scheduled for 8:30 p. in., and long before that time the nailery wns crowded-with an enthusiastic assembly of spectators to witness the fray. Jeff Main was chosen referee and sharp on time blew his whistle for the players to- line up. At the signal to start both sides rushed things, but shortly after Hood and Howarth got tho puck between them and scoijed first blood for Sandon amid great cheering. This was repeated in .a few minutes. Then Nelson scored and were greeted with applnuse. It looked as* if the contest was going to be a very close and exciting one, but Sandon got in its combination and kept the rubber near Nelson's goal throughout the game. Goals were scored very frequently. Nelson making some line rushes and scoring a few times, but Hogan showed up,to fine advantage, and at one time when knocked down and the stick flung out of his hand with the puck near his goal, he grabbed it with his hand and threw it into the centre. At half time the Bcore stood Sandon 0, Nelson 3. Town Jottings. Charles Anderson has become n British subject. A couple of more feet of the beautiful on Wednesday. James Anderson, of Whitewater, has been created a J. P. The Rev.'Mr. Ball left for his home in Trail on Monday. The Hon. A. G. Blair ia going to withdraw from the Federal Cabinet. A ball will be held at the Grand hotel atNakusp ou the. 17th of March, St. Patrick's day. Mr. Macdonald, of Ross & Macdonald, reached home from his Nova Scotian visit this week. The War Eagle at Rossland, it is said, has been sold to an English syndicate for 2 1-2 millions. Barney Chandler, the C. P. R. agent at Silverton, returned on Friday from eastern Canada, with his bride. The Ladies' Aid of the Presbyterian church will give a taffy pull in Crawford's hall on Thursday, March 20th. It is said that Gordon Hunter, K. C, of ..Victoria, ..will, J-e appointed. Chief Justice of the Supreme court of thiB province. Now that the late trustee election has been investiged, it lies with the Council of Public Instruction to do as they think best in the matter. The Rev. Mr. Green lectured an temperance in the Methodist church on Mondav last, but we failed to see it has closed up any of the saloons. The Rossland sportsmen are always much welcome in Sandon. /They always take the results whether for them or against them in the best of good humor. Mr. White says the ledge on the Silversmith is improving all the time, which assumes a mine of large proportions. Bob McDonald, formerly the genial proprietor of the Balmoral, who has bee'h on tour of the surrounding districts, returned to town this week. The Sandon Curling club are contesting for the All Comers cup and prizes among themselves. So" far two games have been played; M. L. Grimmett defeating Dan McLachlan and Hall coming out one point ahead of Gomm in a close match. The series is still going on and it will be some days before the finals are announced. There is some talk of forming a team from the Sandon and Nelson players to go t'o Winnipeg and try conclusions with the Stanley cup players of tha1 city. Should the idea materialize a strong combination ought to be made up that would do credit to both towns and give the Winnipeggers enough to do to hold their own. The Silver cup people, says the Lar- deam Eagle, have out nearly 700 tons of the proposed 800-ton output, and it is reported have also struck a large new chute of ore in an unexpected portion of the mine, which if taken out will largely increase the output. The Nettie L. people are continuing work,, and o.re is now being rawhided down over the waggon road. Work is being prosecuted on the Black Warrior, Horseshoe, Beatrice, and a few individual properties, nut of course tliere can be very little real ac- tivity.expected for a couple of months. The Trustee Mroilio. An Investigation into the Matter was ' Held on Tuesday. Mr. Wilson, school inspector, came in on Tuesday, and held an investigation as to the irregularities in connection with the late trustee election the next day. At the investigation three things were established. 1. That the trustee electtons were not held on the day of the municipal elections, as the law says, they shall be "when possible." The only reason given for the impossibility was the matter was overlooked. 2. It was shown that when the elections were held but five clear days' notice was given between the days of posting and the nomination. 3. That a trustee was elected who was not on the voters' list, and was not qualified to go on. Mr. Wilson also inspected the school while here. Mining Near Silverton. The Ruth May Open Shortly. It is reported that the Ruth mine will resume operations sometime about May 1st, when a good staff of men will likely be engaged to work this mine. This property has been closed down for over a year or more on account of the low price." of lead and silver and ,conditions effecting silver-lead mining generally. The Hope, one of the group, has been under steady developrnent during the winter months, employing two or three men. Some occasional shipments have been made from the Hope when the rawhiding first started. This claim was worked last fall in a small way, only a few were then work- on it. On the lower tunnel of the Ruth is where most work has been done. It is expected that the lead in this level will be struck with about 80 feet more work. Some ore has been taken out of this tunned and sacked and isnow ready for shipment. The ore assays somelike 200 ounces to the ton. Purely development work has been done on the Ruth property until the the mining outlook took changes for the better. It is likely plans have been mapped out for future operation. Last fall theore find- The owners of the Dalhouisfi group, Ten Mile, will commence working the property as early as the snow will permit. The Dalhousie is a promising property. The Neepawa, Ten Mile, continues to improve; and the holders of the bond consider that they have a valuable mine. The returns for a carload of ore have been received and the net returns are $300 over all expenses. The smelter figures show that the ore went 55 ounces silver, 57 per cent eilicia and 1 per cent copper. The ore was taken from the ledge and shipped without any particular sorting. A trial shipment of five tons of ore was made last week by the May, a Twelve Mile property. The ore was taken from the drift. A continuous streak was followed from the outcrop- pings. The May is a graesroot proposition, and it adds another to tho list of shipments from the division. Tlie Mining Review. SATURDAY, MARCH S, 1902. FOR THE BETTER. We are glad to see that Liberals as well as Conservatives are taking a more sensible view of commercial and industrial questions in Canada. The following resolution passed'by the Associated Boards of Trade at Kaslo last week is a proof in point: Whereas, Canada is becoming a large producer of pig lead, and its product is being sold to a veiy limited extent in Canada, while the bulk is being disposed of in China, Japan, Germany and other foreign countries, and Whereas, (.'astern Canada is today importing from Germany practically all the white lead it consumes: Be it resolved, that the Dominion government be again requested to so increase its duties as to make the manufacture of white lead aiid other manufactured lead possible in Canada, and so allow the producer .of pig lead in Canada an additional market in his own. country for his own product, and that a committee consistingof President G. U. Buchanan, W. H. Ald- ridge and James Cronin be appointed to go to Ottawa to place this resolution before the House. If the entire world had universal free it might be best for all; but when it has not got it and is not likely to have it in the present generation at least, dreaming over theories and sentiments is only so much waste of time and money. Everyone knows one of the main causes of the present depression in this province is the low price of lead; and as matters stand tliere is no cure for it. If we had Free Trade with the United States, for instance, our mine managers would get from $3.50 to J^.OO per cwt. for lead, the same as the trust has t,o pay the producers tliere; but when we havn't it and can't get it, the next best thing we can do is to take care of ourselves, the best way we can. If we cannot, get Free Trade for our raw materials, there is no reason why we should give Free Trade to the United States and other countries for lead manufactured. This principle Cannot be gainsaid. By placing duties on manufactured lead, or lead products, we will manufacture our raw material and supply home, demand; and in getting the raw material cheaper from our producers than the American manufacturer can get it from tlie trust, our manufacturers should in a verv abort NOW IS THE TIME Seasons change. Times are never as good as when wages are high and work is plentiful; but work must always diminish as labor demands the lion's share of the profits. When the latter is the case, it means ruin to both.. Our idea is divide profits between employer and employes. Things are always unhealthy when it is otherwise. NOTICE. Tlie Mining Review. SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1902. FOR THE BETTER. We are glad to see that Liberals as well as Conservatives are taking a more sensible view of commercial and industrial questions in Canada. The following resolution passed by the Associated Boards of Trade at Kaslo last week is a proof in point: Whereas, Canada is becoming a large producer of pig lead, and its product is being sold to a veiy limited extent in Canada, while the bulk is being disposed of in China, Japan, Germany and other foreign countries, and Whereas, oastern Canada is today importing from Germany practically all the white lead it consumes; Be'it resolved, that the Dominion government be again requested to so increase its duties as to make the manufacture of white lead aud other manufactured lead possible in Canada, and so allow the producer .of pig lead in Canada an additional market in his own country for hii- own product, aud that a committee consistingof President G. 0. Buchanan, W. H. Ald- ridge and James Cronin be appointed to go to Ottawa to place this resolution before the House. If the entire world had universal free it might be best for all; but *when it has not got it and is not likely to have it in the present generation at least, dreaming over theories and sentiments is only so much waste of time and money. Everyone knows one of the main causes of the present depression in this province is the low price of lead; and as matters stand tliere is no cure for it. IE we had Free Trade with the United States, for instance, our mine managers would get from $3.50 to $4.00 per cwt. for lead, the same as the trust has to pay the producers there; but "when we havn't it and can't get it, the next best thing we can do is to take care of ourselves, the best way we can. If we cannot get Free Trade for our raw materials, there is no reason why we should give Free Trade to the' United States and other countries for lead manufactured. This principle cannot be gainsaid. By placing duties on manufactured lead, or lead products, we will manufacture our raw material and supply home demand; and in getting the raw, material cheaper from our producers than the American manufacturer can get it from the trust, our manufacturers should in a very short time, be able to compete with orrj American cousins in any country that has fields for lead products. This resolution is the proper thing, and the delegation should exhaust the last effort to secure a pledge from the government at Ottawa, that they will give effect to its very reasonable and moderate request. NOW IS THE TIME . Seasons change. We can't change them. We can't prevent the coming of cold and damp airs. ' * But we can prevent the sore throats, the coughs, colds and lung troubles by taking Scott's Emulsion. Nothing does more to make the tender throat tough. Nothing gives such strength to weak lungs. We are glad to see the press of this country becoming more and more sensible on this point. Times are never as good as when wages are high and work- is plentiful; but work must always diminish as labor demands the lion's share of tho profits. When the latter is the case, it means ruin to both.. Our idea is divide profits between employer and employes. Things are always unhealthy when it is otherwise. Prior into his cabinet as Minister of Mines, and the colonel will.contest Victoria with Mr. Bod well. What the result will be it is hard to forecast: sentiment appears to be in favor of Bod well, but Prior is a very strong man. Had Mr. Dunsmuir done something like this when he took J. C. Brown, of New Westminster, in, he would be to the front today with a .strong government. As it is, we are given to the belief Mr. Dunsmuir .will pull through the session without defeat. He'has announced in the speech from the Throne that he is going to England, as premier, to witness the coronation of King Edward, to be knighted, we presume, and no doubt he intends to go. This means he intends to hold the premiership until after tin- term, at least. There are but a few members of the House who want to go to the people again, and fewer still can afford it. This is a strong reason why a dissolution is not very likely. Mr. Dunsmuir is a wealthy man. and would not be much shaken by the expenditure ofa couple of hundred thousand dollars aud- many .of the opposition members are needy.
