T. Post Office Department of C. C. Wil derous assault with a razor ,,on Jim r Volpe in which he attempted to be head him. The affray took place in Princeton on the platform in'front of the Tulameen hotel. The men had been working out on the line at station work and came into Princeton that afternoon'. There was no quarrelling rior altercation;, between1 them at the time and the affair was altogether treacherous arid cold-blooded, for the assailant went over to Thomas' store after they had been drinkintr for a while and bought a razor with which he returned. Suddenly and without warning he slashed at Volpe catching him first at the back of the neck and drawing the razor around to the wind pipe he narrowlv missed the jugular vein. , The long wound > while deep in places is hot regarded by the. doctor as serious. Volpe was brought to the railway hospital at Hedley. When first cut he sat down on a bench and made no outcry for several minutes until, finally he called for a doctor and by this time Dominick had time to escape. - " ' Constable Hewatt, however, on learning of the affair;took prompt steps for his apprehension and the telephone was used to head him off. He kept off the wagon roads and a couple of days later was caught about half way between Princeton and Nicola, presumably on the One-mile Trail. The only reason Volpe can assign for the assault was that in his capacity as foreman of the gang he had occasion at times to collect from the men to send out members who were injured and on these occasions Dominick would not contribute and was 'disagreeable and a little friction was caused terminating as above. "- ' NEARING COMPLETION Oroville;Wenatchee Line soon Ready for the Rails. (Oroville Gazette) The heavy blasting that has reverberated through the valley for the past week was the work of a gang of men engaged in connecting the "Y" on the east side of the Okanagan river with the grade of the Oroville-We- uatchee branch. The contractors ran against some prettv heavy rock work at that point requiring the burning of a goodly quantity of powder. When this short link is finished there will be a continuous roadbed for a long distance all ready for the ties and rails.. The grade is about entirely completed from Oroville to Tonasket, and the gaps from that point to Pateros, the present terminus, are being rapidly filled in. There is some bridge and culvert work to be finished, but from present indications there is no known reason why the entire length of the line should not be ready for- the steel. If the condition of affairs is anything like us bad as the first reports indicate then it is evident that the swindle has been much more widespread than the mere arrest of these three would warrant'and that those fiscal agents who issue the literature-upon which stock was sold under misrepresentation were equally culpable for the. false statements sent out. The same thing is now coming to Canada: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, even the territories, are now sending millions of dollars each year to Toronto arid other Ontario cities and towns for manufactures, for goods, arid also as interest on investments: so are they to Montreal and places east of Ontario. The Okanagan alone it is estimated, will ship -500 ears of fruit to the prairies. W. E. Scott, deputy minister of agriculture, says it is difficult to estimate what the whole output of the province will be, but he expects that they will ship at least 1,200carloads, or overa million pounds. Prices will rule low this year. The crop is very heavy in every line, prunes, pears, cherries and early apples being especially plentiful. Ff the weather should prove dry during the next two months Mr. Scott is of opinion that there will be some small fruit where the orchards are not properly cultivated, but where cultivation is carried on the fruit should be unusually heavy. One difficulty at present is that labor is so scarce that growers are not thinning their fruit properly. The result will be a large quantity of small fruit, instead of the finer grade, which demands higher prices. The outlook on the islands of the Gulf as well as on Vancouver Island is splendid. All the trees are laden to the limit, and the growers should make money if they can secure the necessary labor to save the fruit while it is good. Labor is at present the great difficulty. In some districts it is impossible to get men at any price. Strawberries are now selling at ten cents a pound and immense quantities are being consumed. To talk of overdoing, the business in the face of this record is an absurdity that should never he mentioned. "What are the prospects for the fruit crop this season?" was" asked "Very good indeed, we expect to ship a. thousand cars of fruit out of the province this year; indeed thereiii ay be more, and I expect a brisk demand owing in part to destructive storms in the great Mississippi Valley last April. The extent of the damage done to the fruit crop may be gauged by the report of the Horticultural Department of the State of Iowa recently issued, which shows the following averages of a normal crop; Peaches, less than 1 per cent. . Pears, less than 1 per cent. European varieties of plums, less than 1 per cent, Currants and gooseberries, no crop. Cherries four per cent. Apples, 3 per cent. American plums, 3 per cent. Strawberries, 30 per cent. Raspberries, 30 per cent. "This deficiency will lie made cood by shipments from California, Oregon, Washington and the Southern States, and will have a marked effect on the demand for fruit in the Northwest provinces. "The prospects were never better, but we must be careful ro keep up the quality of our goods and the packing must be neat and honestly done; nothing else will win; nothing else should succeed." Keremeos-Pentictoii Mail Stage.
