B. Aymswobth. "William Scott, Esq., 369 Elgin Ave., Winnipeg, Man. The Board of Licence Commissioners for South East Yale met in Fairview on 'Friday, loth, when ii number of applications for new licences and for renewals of existing licences came up for consideration. ' The principal interest centred in the case of the Central Hotel nt Keremeos, which had incurred the displeasure of the Chief Licence Inspector, who, as announced by him in a previous issue, had reported to the Board that the Central Hotel was being run as a saloon, and who -claimed to have liad authoiity from the Board to order the hotel to be closed. As f,he Board had not met to consider the question, and the Inspector was evidently acting from some motive known only to himself in harassing needlessly the holders of the licence, the chairman of the Board very properly stepped in, as he was in a position to know that Mi*. Venner's claim that the place was being conducted as a saloon was not founded on fact, for the holder's of the licence, although occupying temporary premises after'the fire,' were giving both sleeping and eating accommodations. Here was an, occasion for the exercise of a little common sense as well as justice oil the part of the Inspector, and that had not.been forthcoming. The. Board very properly saw the question in the right light and granted the licence. All other applications were granted, with- the exception of that of Mrs. Blyth for the Blythwobd hotel .-.at Westbridge. TWENTY-MILE ROAD. Good Force of Men at Work and Fair Progress Being Made. Operations in the building of the new road up Twenty-Mile, are now on in earnest. Beginning at the bridge below the old charcoal kiln, the new road follows the east bank of the creek, where an easy grade has been obtained for a distance of half a mile. As to the work already done, generous width and careful grading are particularly noticeable. The more difficult part of the construction is now entered upon, cribwork, filling and bridging being necessary to make the ascent of the canyon. The amount of money appropriated will not finish the work, but "well begun is half done," and the portion already constructed reflects credit on foreman Deardorf and his nine men. ,, Qn Sunday, Ling (something),' who operated a laimdry ' oii Ellis avenue, nearly opposite the. Methodist church, moved his plant down to 'iChinatbwn." He.is now located in the new building recently put up by Mu Yuen in that quarter. This is a good move on his part, as it was only a.matter of time when his plant would be out of place on that street. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Many settlers are coining in to take up land, and the heavv rains have done much to help the growth of the numerous young orchards which have been set out during the last few seasons. METEOROLOGICAL. The day was almost a perfect one for a game; not' enough sun to make it too warm, and a nice breeze blowing down the valley which kept tlie air fresh and cool! ..- The game was ..called by umpire- Boeing at' 3 p.inV, with Keremeos'at the biit. The visitors started out well,, scoring, two in the'first and two in the' third inning, but after that they crossed ithe plate only three times. The "boys in bhib"'scored -'three times in the first inning and eight in the third, and with this lead the result of the game was never in doubt. The play, for the most part, was not fast, though the players on both teams showed good spirit and did their best to make the game as interesting as possible. . A noticeable and pleasing feature of this game was tlie entire absence of wrangling and disputing on the field. An umpire, is only human and is liable to make mistakes even while doing his best to deal fairly. Turner, the Keremeos captain, thoroughly understands the game, and when he bad any objection to make he did it in a quiet, gentlemanly manner, thus doing away with all the fuss and loud talk which was so evident in former games. The.amount of buncombe, in which some papers oi: usual eclir tovial intelligence can at times indulge was illustrated by the -St Paul Dispatch the other day when, 'fi\ commenthig oh the death of Gabriel Dumont,', lieutenant .of Louis Reil in the Canadian northwest rebellion of 1885. It referred to. Keil as one who "a hundred years from now will have taken his place among those victims of British fear like Napoleon and Joan d'Arc. The "rank.;may seem too high for those of us -who lived in the day when Louis Reil was almost king, but without doubt he isia. figure to appeal to the imagi- llation, and the future may do . him'the poetic justice which Canada was forced to deny him." It is almost incomprehensible that a writer claiming to be-well- informed should declare that "criticism will always be visited upon the British government at Regina. That execution fol- lowed a regularly conducted trial in which Reil had every opportunitj" under the law to clear himself, hut as a result of which the jury, without hesitation, found him deserving of the fate that was subsequently meted out to him. Kiel's character was such as to call forth no sympathy except from those of his own race, and among his followers there were many who when they realized how he had misled them through false representations, were willing to admit that justice was vindicated when he was executed. The upraising which he led in 1885 was without j ustification, and he was intelligent enough to know that there was never any prospect that it would succeed, yet he recklessly started a small war in which many lives were' lost. In the rebellion of 1869 his true character was even more glaringly manifested in the cruel and treacherous murder of Thomas Scott at Fort Garry. Had he fallen before the bullets of soldiers in battle or been shot down by the small body of scouts that effected his capture, there would have been little sympathy wasted . upon him. But since he was given a judicial trial and was condemed to death maudlin sentiment strives to make him a hero and martyr. Spokesman-Review;. In the death of Sir Hector Langeviti another of the "few rehuiihing Fathers of biohf^deration has departed. Sir Hector was the natural successor of Sir Geo. Cartier as leader of the French-Canadian Conservatives. He was an able organizer and administrator and for years held .powerful sway politically in his own province. -The scandals which developed in his department were the beginning of the end of the long Liberal-Conservative rule in Canada. and were '.exposed as the result of a quarrel between himself and Mr. Isreal Tarte, who . afterwards joined the Liberal administration. It is of especial interest to know that Sir Hector was active in promoting the union of British Columbia with Canada, and one of the first official reports on the province was prepared by him and submitted' to' parliament. He- had only to live a feAV years longer to have seen the downfall of the Liberal government upon charges of political corruption much .more serious and widespread than any with, which he was associated and which cast a shadow over his political career.
