Some ol' them are brutally candid, on the subject of what Uncle Sam has in stole for Canada, Thirty years' operation of the Canadian tariff or National Policy has resulted in over 150 American industries establishing branch fact-ones in Canada. It was not until they had become convinced of the fact that protection to home industry had become a fixed principle in.Canada's fiscal policy that the" movement became general, and now when Vancouver was counting on gtlting a. branch of the United States Stool plant and Hamilton, Out, are about to get the Oliver Plow Works, of Indiana, which Elbert Hubbard says will mean an addition in population of 25000 from that one industry it is surely an inopportune- time for Fielding, Patterson, Laurier et al. to give them the impression that if they wait a. bit it may not be necessary for them to come at all. The announcement that fruit is one of the commodities to go on the free list in the reciprocity arrangements entered into by Canadian commissioners Fielding and Patterson comes like a thunderclap to fruit-growers great and small. Large concerns that had un- deraken huge irrigation schemes involving the expenditure of sums in the neighborhood of a million dollars in some cases more, have reason to be dismayed at the prospect of heavy loss staring them in the face, and men who had saved tip a few thousands out of the earnings of almost a lifetime and put it into fruit lands at prices ranging from $200 to $700 per acre expecting the investment to keep them in their declining years, are alike dumbfounded at the suddenness with which this calamity has come upon them. After adopting a fiscal system and demonstrating by a trial of over thirty years that it has been the means of building up a prosperous country-it seems incredible that a man in banner's position would put in the power of two old chaps like the Commissioners to work ruin of this nature and extent. facts from Parker we paid no more attention to C. M. K. than to tlie barking ot a yellow dog, and only a blackguard like the editor of the Sunset or of "World's Work" would permit the publication of an attack upon the bona fides of an iustituti> ai or the. personal honor of an individual by any one who was too cowardly to sign his name. The Sunset code of honor in that respect we all know, and thanks to Ida. M. Tarbell and Tom Lawson we also know something of the capabilities of the power behind the throne in "World's Work." To further prove the lying resorted toby McConnell in this list of questions, it is only necessary to-point out that the last sale of stock was made here on September 10th, 1909, and that neither after seeing the article by C. M. lv. nor for weeks before was a; man in Hedley asked to buy a share of the stock. But the C. M. K. article had nothing whatever to do with the' cessation of stock sales. The only reason for this was that the price of the stock had then gone beyond a mark where the editor of the Gazette was prepared to put any of his own money into it and he is not in the habit of pressing others to risk where he will not do so himself. Another lie contained in the questions is the assumption that any prominence given to Wireless in the columns of the Gazette was due to any instructions received from any source whatever. A careful examination of our office files, moreover, shows that only three times in the six months proceeding the action of the post office authorities in the. middle of .Tune last, was Wireless mentioned in our columus and in every instance it was the reproduction of a news item concerning it taken from Vancouver dailies and had no reference whatever to the purchase of stock. Thus McConnell the prince of lying slanderers, has again had his lies put down his throat. Possibly when he gets a little older he will learn who to leave alone and quit .imagining that others could be as unprincipled as himself. Miss Corrigan, of Keremeos is visiting in Hedley for a. few days with her father and brothers, and is the guest of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Wirth. Holly Brown was taken to the hospital on Saturday for treatment for her ailment. During the past week she has been subject to a series of convulsions. A John. Love, of Phoenix, paid Hedley a visit last week and remained for a couple of days. He reports Phoenix prosperous and mining in that section in a healthy condition. On Tuesday night next (7th inst) the Lyceum Players will appear in Hedley under the auspices of the Ladies' Hospital Auxiliary. General admission 75 cents; reserved seats $1.00. Dr. McCaffrey, of Princeton, came down on Tuesday and assisted Dr. McEwen in tho amputation of a portion of \V. T. Atherton's feet which hud been frozen during the late cold snap. Mrs. Frank Logsden arrived in town last week on her return from a lengthy, visit to her, friends in California. She remained a day and then went on to Princeton where her husband is working. The harpist Tioiuanillo is a strong feature of the entertainment given by tlie Lyceum Players. He has no equal, in liis presentation of habitant stories, but on this occasion there will only be time for him to give one habitant selection. February 2nd. Ecclesiastics call it Candlemas Day, but we on the frontier will continue to know it as "groundhog day" and will stick to the , old legend of the groundhog and his shadow. Now what did that "stone mowitch" do to-day, anyhow? Four short plays will be put on by C. P. AValker's Lyceum Players. While each play under the circumstances must be short they are nevertheless claimed to contain qualities which make them dramatic gems, and the members of the troupe have genius and skill to bring out those qualities. Miss Emily Jackson, of the JNew Zealand was taken violently ill at the end of tlie week with an acute attack of appendicitis. On Friday evening her condition was quite serious but on Sunday then.* was a marked improvement and she was considered fit to stand the journey to Spokane for treatment. The Saturday Sunset editor appears to have found an echo in the scribe who runs the Chilliwack New Era. When the latter wants to play the role of foot-licker be; should seek a- worthier oxainplar than the blackguard of tho Sunset who apparently has only to take snuff to set his Chilli- Avack protege sneezing. Last week some of those who had discarded their wood-burning stoves and put in coal stoves had a taste of trying to keep up heat by burning wood in their coal stoves and are not disposed to regard it as being much of a success. A car-load of coal which was about ten days overdue was responsible for the shortage. Fortunately the coal man happened to have a. fair supply of wood on hand or some would have been rather badly caught. The; new matron of the HodIe\- Hospital is Miss Margaret M." Miller who. had her professional training and. miich of licit.* practice ill Scotlond, although she has had appointments in this country both in Alberta and British Columbia. She. is expected to arrive here before this issue is in the post office^ Mr. and Mis. Rotherham entertained the members of'the.Golf Club at their residence on Friday evening last when a very enjoyable time was spent. To-night the Golfers meet in Fraternity hall for a farewell party to Misses Fraser and Bond of the Hospital staff. Cards, dancing, music and other diversions will be provided in the way of entertainment. The burning =o'f-. fire-crackers and general hullabaloo a round the Chinese quarter left no doubt that China, New Year had come around again. Sortie of the tyees also made their rounds among their patrons distributing tea packages and other presents showing their good will and illustrating that .the New Year spirit is abroad among them. The Presbyterians, of Penticton, extended a call- to Rev. W. Miller, a graduate of Queens^University, Kingston, who was a missionary student in Fairview in the summer of 1901. He is also a brother of Rev. John M. who is well known throughout tho province having had charge of important congregations at Phoenix, Nanainiq and other points. The Presbyterians of Penticton. have madeaio mistake in their choice, and Mr. Miller in coming back to the Okanagan after an interval of ten years will find himself in a somewhat different atmosphere. Coasting down the Hospital hill on Webster street is. now a favorite diversion. The grade is over fifteen per cent and the bottom of it is the bridge over twenty-mile. To fail to steer straight on to the bridge would mean disaster and the speed attained.is tha t of an express train. So great is the momentum that the sleds after striking the level continue along Webster street on a slight up-grade for a distance, of about a .block and a half. Grown-ups who savvy the 'sport ih'ay engage in it with comparative safety but where their example is likely to encourage children it is questionable whether it is wise to permit it. Then there is the danger to street traffic which it entails. No team would stand the meeting of a sled or toboggan going at such a rate. keep; your eyes on CAMP H WATCH IT GROW It is destined to be the Greatest Gold Mining Camp in Canada. Miss Violet Kirby is now in charge of the post office in place of Miss Mildred,'who is resinning her studies in the public school. Mr. Gibson of Vancouver, who has some property interests "at the old town site, has been spending a few days in Keremeos this week. Mr. 0. H. Carle is spending the greater portion of his time in Princeton these days in connection with his business interests theie. A party of Kettle. Valley surveyors came in on Tuesday and detrained here. They were evidently on their way to Penticton, but their presence in tiie valley, looks good at any time Keremeos is still without a barber (Meg pardon, Charley. We forgot), "Fish", who left some time ago on a trip to Vancouver having failed to return up to date. Rev. Mr. Cleland conducted service here, .Sunday, morning and evening. While tlie congregations now are not as large-as they used to be Mr. Cle- la nil's visits are none the less appreciated. H. B. Measette was in Princeton on Friday looking up some contract work. Harry is a first class workman and our friends up the valley might go farther and fare much worse than by engaging hitii. Fruit-growers should keep in mind the lectures and demonstrations in connection with fruit growing to be given here on Monday and Tuesday next and be on hand prepared to pro- lit by the information to be had. Mr. Spencer and family left on Tuesday for Ontario where they will nia'ke their residence. Mr. Spencer has been a good citizen and we regret their de- departure from the valley. We trust however that they may find life in old Ontario all that they hope for. There were, big doings in Chinatown the beginning of the week, the occasion being the beginning of the Chinese New Year. Unlike ours the celebration usually lasts anywhere from a week to a month: but then it is the only holiday in the whole year that they celebrate. Mrs. A. C. Kennedy returned this week from a visit to her friends in California. On her way out she had thc- misfortune to be in the Great Northern train wreck at Summit, thus givinsr some excitement to mix with the pleasure of the visit. Sain Manery and bride, arrived here on Thursday afternoon on their return from their honeymoon trip and drove down to the home of the groom's parents Mr. and Mrs. Win. Manery. On the following evening a large party of young people from here formed a sleighing party and drove down and called upon them. Reciprocity negotiations is tlie all engrossing topic of conversation in tills* district. Even our leading liberal is having a hard time to convince, himself (to say nothing of others) that it is alright. While we do not wish to appear pessimistic still we cannot help thinking that the commissioners, in making their concessions to the Prairie farmer have dealt British Columbia a crushing blow. That there is method in their madness cannot be doubted as tlie liberal party have nothing to lose in British Columbia and much that they are anxious to hold in the prairie provinces. It all points to a federal election within tlie year. Engineers on thc route of the Kettle Valley railroad tell of some hold np tactics on the part of ranchers along the right-of-way which equal some of the stunts in this valley in the construction days and were equally successful. In one instance a rancher, looking for indemnity, pulled up his fruit trees and planted them where he believed the right-of-way was to go, only to find that it eventually passed through the ground from which he had removed the trees. Another built a large barn on the supposed right-of- way and nearly died of chagrin when he found that the road .side stepped it. 'Mr, Editor; you took us up wrong in regard to our statement last week that most of the readers of the Gazette did not- get their papers until Friday. We did not mean to imply, that it was owing to any neglect on the part of the post-office officials here, but to tlie fact that many of the readers living at some little distance from the post office do not trouble to call for the evening mail from up the valley. We do not know of a single instance in which the copies of the Gazette were not sorted in the post office here on Thursday evening within a few in in utes after the arrival of the train. During the week no fewer tlian three petitions have been passed around for signatures. One hailing from Fair- view asks for a. change in the location of the Kerenieos-Fairview road in the vicinity of the.Stemwinder.-mine; one from claim owners at the Apex asks for a. wagon road up Cedar creek to the summit and another, started rolling by D. McCurdy, asks the government to refrain from granting separate schools to Chinese, as requested by the Trades and Labor Union. J. A.
