Now if Canadian life insurance cannot stand all the daylight that may be let in by means of a thorough and searching examination into the affairs of any and all of the companies-.doing business in Canada, then .it is high time that public, faith should be shaken and the eyes of the public opened to see what -means have been employed by financial parasites to fatten. on .the hard-earned savings of others. That there, are very great leaks somewhere i.s quite apparent, for the profits to policy-holders in many of the companies are becoming microscopic, and the insurance is costing more than the actuaries have determined as the proper sum for which insurance should be carried. If this leakage, is in profits to stock-holders, high salaries to officials or unnecessarily high commissions to agents, the public ought to know it, and Attorney-General Foy will be doing the public a good service by putting the ball in motion. There is every reason why there should be a most rigid investigation, the Globe to the contrary notwithstanding. In Ottawa, city the share-holders of the York County Loan are anxious to have J. Lome MeDougall conduct the investigation. The Toronto Star publishes an interview with an agent of the York County Loan who admits that he was employed most of his time in writing life insurance for a stock company, the Toronto Life, and charging his salary and expenses up to the York Lonn, and this is the kind of the Globe wants to keep RENEWALS. \" Jas. He went up the river on Wednesday's stage., The Hedley Lumber Company have their camps in full swing-up, thu river, where they are using every endeavor to secure an exceptionally large cut for the season's' supply of lumber. They have a considerable quantity of logs on the river bank opposite the mill but are waiting for tins river to freeze over in order to 'get them over. Out of thirteen examined 'in one day at Vernon ten had' to lie killed, and a'few days'previous twenty were slaughtered. ' ' - .Editor Keffer of the Anaconda News is to be congratulated on the fifth annual number which is to hand and is a most interesting production. The history of the paper as related^ by the editor and covering the period from 1900 to* 1905, gives evidence that its publisher is made of the right kind of stuff. In this number, too, is contained a great deal of what the public are most anxious to know in the way of information about the Boundary. - A Sunnnerland correspondent of the Vernon News states'that \"Sir Thomas Shaughnessy is having one of the large movable cottages erected on his property.\" This would look as if Sir Thomas has to do a little guessing about railway location like the rest of us. The correspondent doesn't 'say what style of locomotion this particular movable cottage is to have. The designer of the cottage should next try his hand on getting up a movable townsite. ' ' Pat Burns having the meat contract for the Great Northern on this portion of the road, brings in a state of affairs that is not to the liking of.local ranchers, who cannot sell a pound of meat to sub-contractors although willing to deliver it for less than they are paying at the camps. In the matter of grain and hay they can sell all they have, but if they cannot get rid of their beef cattle they will require the' hay themselves to bring their stock through the winter. The manager of one of them, the Sun- Savings and Loan, when remonstrated with about this replied that it was unreasonable to- expect a .society of that kind to do husiness without the amended elalise which took from the shareholder the light to withdraw ninety per cent, of what had been paid in as agreed when shareholders were induced to take stock, and he was quite offended when told that ''maybe it was a little bit too much to expect eagles, hawks and other winged creatures 'of that ilk to prosper without beak and talons.\" A few months ago Hedley was visited by an agent of a AVinnipeg concern who claimed great\" superiority for his institution which for the first time .was giving western people a chance to purchase preference slock'and intim-r ating that heretofore only the'skim- milk was allowed to western purchasers by the eastern' concerns.. This preference stock Avas held at a premium of 25 per cent^but it was sure to yield profits of anywhere from 10 to 32 percent. This particular' note as the agent explained, was to be made at four months but was to be altogether a matter of convenience for the'maker thereof, who need not meet it in full when it became due, but could pay just as much.or as little as he felt disposed and the balance, .was to be carried oyer for him. From some these notes were taken with this \"' understanding; from others neither > f notes nor cash were'required. The first of these notes to fall due (and why one of them was made to fall due before the other i.s a1 matter that deserves some explanation ) was pre-' sented to the maker for payment about two hours before the bank closed on the due date. The banker was asked whether any instructions were given him for acceptance of a portion, and replied that there were none, and -would give no I assurance that any exception would j be. made in this case from the ordinary treatment for non-payment of notes. Tiie Hedley subscribers had for the most part decided to lose the five percent, which they paid in and proceed . no further in the matter, whereupon the company sent in a--different iep- reseutative from the first agent, to i pour oil on.the troubled waters. His > reception might have been called frigid {if it were..'not for the warmth .that was imparted to some- of th'i; meetings. The subscribers were not.--disposed to treat with a stranger, and the latter was equally devoid of either tact, courtesy or common sense.
