Oflico on North Main Street. Notwithstanding the. short notice there avus a good attendance out to hear- Mr. Burrell address the electors of Hedley on Wednesday night of last Aveek. With the exception of the meeting at Kereineos on the night' before this Avas practically the commencement of the campaign in Yale- Cariboo and Avhile the result is not for a moment to be considered in doubt the immense size of the riding to,lie covered will make it a strenuous campaign. Mr. J. D. Brass, president of the local Conservative association, occupied the chair. .Mr. Burrell in opening referred to the enormous size of the riding Avhich made it difficult for a representative to get around to the various parts of his constituency and Avhile he -had been through a considerable portion of the riding since the general etection of three years ago this Avas the first time he had been able to get back into the Similkaineen valley. But if British Columbia\had: been fairly dealt with by the government of the day in the matter of representation theiin- portance of Yale-Cariboo Avould demand another member or more. He gave a synopsis of eA*ents in the closing days of the session to illustrate the state of panic in Avhich the House had been dissolved arid the shameful manner in which the government had broken faith not only with the opposition but Avith their oavii friends. This breach of faith consisted in securing from the opposition consent for adjournment oil a promise that charges against the Minister of interior Av'oukl be taken up Avhen the house re-assembled on Tuesday but during the period for Avhich the house had been adjourned, or on the Saturday before the time set for re-assembling', the House had been dissolved and tliere had.been set a precedent unequalled for '.'moral turpitude on the part of any government at OttaAva. In this connection he also dealt Avith the misrepresentation of the opposi-- tion's position on the part of Minister Templeman avIio blamed them for obstructing the Avork of the House, implying that the opposition Avere responsible for the failure of parliament to provide supply. The facts Avere that the opposition in addition to granting supply for four months ahead in order to allow ' the Premier to attend the Imperial Conference, had also agreed to grant supply for any reasonable length of time Avhich tho government might ask on condition that the matter of Reciprocity be temporarily shelved until the census returns were all in and a redistribution bill could be brought in so as to give fair representation to all parts of the Dominion, but to this the government AA'ould not agree and did not even ask for any more supply. Under these conditions be Avas surprised that a Minister of the Crown Avould misrepresent as Temple- mau had done in this connection. If, hoAvever, tho delaying of the reciprocity measure so as to get it before the country Avas a sin the opposition Avere certainly guilty, but he thought the people of Canada avIio have a right to a say in matter of so great importance AA'ould pardon them for it. On the question of redistribution he explained the extent to Avhich the West bad been done out of their fair share of representation. While reciprocity is the main issue before the electors in this campaign lie claimed tliere Avere many others, some of Avhich in themselves constituted counts too serious to be overlooked by the electorate and as some 'had been fully proven by- committees of the House appointed to investigate them no government should be allmved to remain in office that had thus abused the trust reposed in them. The Oliver charges Avere taken up and these instead of being preferred by the Opposition came from the other side, and Avere forced on lTiogovernment'through the prominence giA'en them in the press. The. fact that Laurier himself considered them of "sufficient importance to AA'arrant him in appointing a special committee of inquiry into theni should be taken by the electors as evidence that the charges AA'ere substantial and demanded full iiiA-estiga- tion instead of the farcical treatment they received Avhich amounted to nothing more or less than that the government considered themselves immune from the punishment Avhich would otherAvise be meted out to Avrong-doers iu other Avalks of life. The most shameful feature of the situation Avas the dishonorable Avayin Avhich the government had broken faith Avith the opposition in order to dodge the consequences if the inquiry Avhich they evidently had advance information avus sure to result in the charges being fully proven, and thus they showed that they Avert* afraid to face inA*estigation. In this connection also the Lanctot matter Avas taken up and the culpability of the government shown from, the sequel in that the electors refused to accept the' govern- .ment's coat of AvhiteAvash applied to the offending member avIio had painted his house at the expense of the gov- ernment and refused to grant him rc- noniination as a. candidate in the constituency. The Prime Minister's attitude at the Imperial Conference he thought was also a question for deepest, concern on the part of Canadians. At first the Premier had shoAvn a petulant spirit and a Avish to minimize the importance of the occasion and did not Avant to go, until the opposition had practically insisted on him going and come foi-Avard with proposals to that end which left him no excuse but to go. His conduct Avhile there, hoAvever, constituted the main fault: for in repudiating Asquitlvs offer to give the Dominions a share in all questions of British diplomacy effecting the interests of the Dominions on the ground that consultation in such a case might involve a share in the responsibility for any measures of defence that might ensue he Avent badly astray. In this Mr. Burrell claimed that the Premier did not represent the general trend of Canadian sentiment on either side of the House and he gave an instance of the. disapproA'al of a stanch Liberal paper, the Montreal Witness, Avhich condemned the Premier's attitude in no uncertain terms by declaring that Laurier's repudiation of such an offer and his claim that Canada Avanted to stand aloof Avas not the Avish of Canadians. The Witness contended that Canada must either move toAvards the empire or aAvay from it and Laurier instead of hailing the for- Avard step had (unauthorized by tlie Canadian people) pronounced the declaration of separation, to the intense regret of many of his own Avarmest supporters, and the surprisn of the people of Great Britain. Taking up the question of reciprocity he dealt-Avith it both from the economic side and the national. The gOA'ernnient by its British preference tariff declared its belief in the principle of closer trade relations within the British empire and iioav by entering into this reciprocity arrangement Avith the U. S. they dealt a death 1)1oav to the very principle they had themselves enunciated. That reciprocity will kill our imperial preference and Avas specially designed for that very purpose he had the authority of President Taft and .1. J. Hill both of Avhose opinions to that effect Avere quoted. The present reciprocity scheme started Avith the French treaty to Avhich the United States objected and threatened a tariff Avar to express their dissap- proval arid tho government of the day Aveakened and gave to the U. S. similar terms accorded to Prance under the. Fiench treaty. Then finding the Canadian government so easy Tuft's next scheme avus the present reciprocity trap into Avhich the Canadian government dropped so easily, sending tAvo SIR WILFRID'S PRAYER Why is He Not Afraid Now ?--"Heaven Grant" He May be.' Here is Sir Wilfrid Laurier's vieAv as to what Canada should do with her oavii tiade. It is contained in his speech on the G. T. P. Why" has he now gone back on it. "We consider that it is the duty of all those who sit Avitliin these Avails by- the Avill of the people, to provide immediate means av hereby the products of those new settlers may find an exit to the ocean at the least possible cost, and Avhereby, likewise, a market may befound in this new region for those avIio toil in the forests, in the fields, tin theinines. in the shops of the old Provinces. Such is pur duty : it is immediate and imperatiA*e. It is not for to-morroAv but of this day, of this hour, and of this minute. Heaven grant that it be not already too late; heaven ^gr-uit that Avhilst we tarry and dispute the TRADE OF CANADA IS NOT DEVIATED TO OTHER CHANNELS and that AN EVER VTG1LANT COMPETITOR DOES NOT TAKE TO HIMSELF THE TRADE that PROPERLY BELONGS to those avIio acknoAvledge Canada as their nabiv.e or adopted land.'" Well, the "eA*er vigilant competitor" has caught hini asleep and, stolen a march on him in this reciprocity muddle, but he is too obstinate 'to own up to the mistake and try to undo the injury. It is therefore up to his supporters to think of themselves and undo it for him. NOW THEY THREATEN The Boston Transcript in its OttaAva. letter, dares the Canadian people to reject the reciprocity 'agreement, saying that the United States Avould justly resent such a verdict, regarding it as a slap in the face to President Taft, and to both political parties in the United States. THE MAN OF MYSTERY CO. Willaid, the man of mystery, held the boards in Fraternity Hall on Monday night and shoAved to a house that Avas not lean enough to be -called a frost and Avas not large enough to do justice to the toAvn's reputation--as a sliOAv-going toAvn. In- this case the performance avus sufficiently meritor- ous, even if it AA*as a one-man show, to Avarrant a good attendance and should he come back to Hedley he can count on a much better house. The sleight- of-hand AA'ork AA*as the best that has been here and his vocal imitations Avere perfect. The only thing that Avas disappointing (and that no fault of the performer) avus the absence on any hypnotic tests and hence no opportunity AA'as giA'en to. judge betAveen him and Mental Avho AA'as here some ago, but Avhen no one would volunteer to go on the stage and Willard did not carry any subjects AA'ith him there could be nothing doing in that line. Nevertheless his talk on that subject AA'as most interesting and his demonstration of hypnotic pcAver on himself in driving the blood from bis arm and bringing it back Avith a rush av.-is decidedly uncanny. His gtoiving test also avus most mysterious and placed him in a. class bv himself. old men Avho Avere Avholly unprepared to go up against astute men like Taft and Knox, armed as the latter Avere Avith the fullest data to sIioav them Avhat AA'ould be the off vet of tariff changes Avhile the Canadian representatives Avere thoroughly helpless and unprepared as they had to admit Avhen questioned aftei-Avards on that point during the course of the debate in the House. Mr. Burrell next revieAA-ed the history of the reciprocitA* measure in force betAveen IS.".I and 1SG6 Avhich avus abrogated by the US. Avithout Avord of Avarning and. Avith the expiess purpose of forcing Canada into annexation, but fortunately it had proved to have had the very opposite effect by making Canadians more self-reliant and forcing them to doA'elop inter-provincial trade Avhich culminated in confederation and started this country off in her course toAA-'ards nationhood. So strong has the reciprocity issue caught the people that they have almost forgotten about the bumper crop they are iioav hai-A-esting. Sir Wilfrid Laurier is iioav appealing .0 the electors of Ontario and Quebec on the. score of his gray hairs. It is gray matter Canada needs nowadays rather than gray hairs and there is not much gray matter displayed in allowing Taft to plaA* Avith the Canadian government in the maimer he has done in connection Avith the reci- piocity pact. Fancy the late Sir John Thompson dissolving the House to head off in- tjnii'A* into serious charges preferred against one of his Mini. ters. When Laurier's attitude in the matter of dealing AA'ith Avrong-doing on the part of his Ministers or his folloAving in the House is contrasted AA'ith that shown by Sir John Thompson in the. last parliament under Conservative rule it is seen Iioav Ioav the moral standard of our government has fallen. Borden, on the other hand, is the stamp of man avIio could be counted on to re- rive the John Thompson standards. Ten million dollars a year is the nice stun Avhich goes to the farmers of Ontario alone for horses supplied to the provinces Avest of Winnipeg and this is the market that Laurier proposes to hand over to the horse-breeders of Montana. As it it, all the money stops in Canada, and the nice little fortunes being piled up bv the fanners of Manitoba and the territories sIioavs that they have not been impoverished by the' prices they have been paying. Why disturb such prosperity by handing over the trade Avhich has caused it to an alien state which has in the past done her best to drive Canada to the Avail. Instead of boosting reciprocity to the direct injury of every farmer in B. C. Avhy doesn't our cotem. oi the Star try to encourage the fanners and the farming industry iii the vicinity of Princeton? At one time our cotem. Avas strong on the subject of horse- raising and could see barrels of money in raising horses for AA'hich it claimed the ranges around Princeton AVerc admirably adapted, and so they are. But reciprocity has been sIioavu by the most prominent hoise dealers in Ontario (Avhere most of the Canadian horses, an- raised) to mean a loss of $50 per head on every horse raised there, Avhile other dealers produced figures tiom their oavii books, to sIioav that | the loss in their case Avill go as high as J $72 per head. Then there is the dairy- j ing industry. Princeton .should have j a. cieamery ami supply good fresh but- j ter and other dairy products for the j Avhole of the Similkameen. A Liberal j tooter the other day made the state-j ment at Nelson'that 90 per cent, of the 1 butter used in Nelson came from : Washington state Avhich avus a fib to- begin with, but nevertheless some of it av.-is corning into Nelson during the hot Aveather just the same as it is coming in to Hedley. Noav none of this money for butter should go out of the country, to help the dairy farmers in Washington, for every dollar that goes out that way is lost to the country for good. Protect our farmers; give, them every chance to establish creameries and other accessories to dairying so that they may make money and keep it in the country and everybody Avill get a share of it. you WORK, nmyom honey WORK TOO. an PEFWinGyouRv-viriw WITH US THEY WIIV BHH1 * 4& INTEREST WHICH WECREWTIiOnTilLY :' riripriopiE^isRETURri- rlBLE ON DEMrWP -IS QUICKLY/IS 7HE.r1i.IL5 GUI CARRY IT.
