Arriving in the\nCity Daily\u00E2\u0080\u0094Local Happenings During Past\nThree Days.\nNothing of great importance has\n, transpired in railroad circles since\n, the 'last issue of The Sun. All the\nsubcontracts on both the smelter\n1 spur and Phoenix branch have been\nlet; the contractors and subcontractors are in the field, nnd camps\nare being established. Great numbers of railway laborers are arriving\nin the city from the south by every\nincoming train, but as from 1500 to\n2000 men will be required, there is\nno danger of flooding the market.\nThc beginning of next week will see\nactual grading started on more than\none piece of work.\nin this city and the mines at Phoenix. W, Y. Williams, the present\nsuperintendent of the mines at Phoenix, has been appointed consulting\nmining man.\nTaylor & Fisher, the local contractors have heen awarded a subcontract on the Great Northern railway smelter spur for that portion of\nthe road between the smelter and\ntho dam, witlftbe exception of the\nrock work. They intend to put on\ntwenty-two heads of horses on this\nwork as a starter, will break ground\nearly next week. This is the only\nlocal firm that have secured a contract on cither the spur or the l'hoenix branch, and they intend to employ home lahor as much as practicable. The work will be commenced\nwitn a force of forty or fifty men,\nwhich will be increased as occasion\nrequires.\nMessrs, Woodard and Fraser, of\nSpokane, have' secured a contract\nfor clearing seven miles of the Phoenix branch right of way, and have\nalready started e force of men on the\nwork.\nThe work of clearing the smelter\nspur right of way is progressing very\nfavorably, about half the work having been completed already.\nThe public will do well to remember the entertainment to he given by\nMiss Pauline Johnson and Walter\nMcRaye on the evening of the 9th\ninst. Of their abilities we quote the\nfollowing from an eastern paper:\n\"To thc student of Indian life, with\nits sorrows and burning passions, its\nwild freedom and joy, Pauline John\nson will stand unequalcd in her interpretation of such characters.
