Speak ahead for your Xmas dinner at the King Edward.\" Men and Things as Seen Thro' Hank Reklaw's Periscope Before another issue of The Press, the elections will be over, and we shall know whether or riot the Union Government is to continue. It does not seem possible that at this time Sir Wilfrid Laurier could command anything like a fplloAving sufficiently strong to put him in power over the combined forces which are ih the contest against him. With the press of the country almost solidly opposed, and other conditions working against him, there docs not seem to be a possible chance to win. Yet, there are unmistakable signs of an undercurrent of thought and feeling which cannot be ignored. With Quebec solidly for him, and here and there constituencies strongly contested, and in doubt, it would be folly to say Sir Robert Borden will have a walk-over. Nobody realizes the need of hard fighting better than thc Government leaders themselves, and they are making the most of every advantage which is theirs. Not having a contest on in this constituency, we little realize how bitter the fight has bcen in other parts .of the Province, and in neighboring provinces. A war-time election is a bad thing at best, and when reverses are in the air, and the nerves of thc people high-strung, it is then that anything is possible. Faith in Canada is'now the essential thing. No matter what be the outcome of the elections, the principles of right and justice for which Canada ever has stood will'still prevail. Ancl if the boys at the front require reinforcements they will get them no matter who is in authority. Canada's loyalty is not bound up in any onc party or set of individuals. Premier Borden nnd his ministers -have had a most strenuous.life, of service in the interest of Canada. They served as-faithfully as any set of men chosen by the people could have served. We believe Sir Robert Borden will still bc Premier after December 17th. But if thc vote, indicates that a change is desired, Sir Robert can step down as gracefully as dozens of other premiers in Allied countries have had lo do since the war began, without any serious consequences to those countries or to the prosecution of the war. Fine Poultry Exhibit Perhaps there have becn larger winter poultry shows in the Northern Okanagan, in point of entries, lhan the winler show held at Armstrong-last week, but for quality in each class and fine appearance of the birds, there can be no question about lhe ,1917 .show leading all previous seasons. The bfrds to win in almost any of the classes had to run close to the mark of perfection, in weight, plumage and shape. Enderby poultry fanciers were on hand with some very fine pens, and all came home with prizes. ; Mr. G. H. Smedley's Black Min- orcas carried off everything in their class, and his pen won first in the Mediterranean class, and for the best bird in this class. Mr. Old ford's Cornish games attracted more attention^ than any pen in the show. He won first cock, 1st cockerel,. 1st and 2nd pullet, 1st pen, and the best pen in the Cornish class. He was also awarded the best pen of games, and-carried off the Association, special prize for thebest bird bred by exhibitor. Eddie Sparrow's Campanese won 1st hen, 1st and 2nd cockerel,'' 1st pullet and 2nd pen. W. J. Graham's White Rocks led in one of the best and largest classes in 'the show. These efforts have all bcen worthy, and particularly the women of Enderby and district deserve all kinds of credit for thc hard work they have done on behalf of this worthy inslilulion. But, after all, are these efforts to be commended? Is this policy the only policy by which lhc Enderby hospital can bc kept in existence? In point of fact, it is tlie only policy that has becn tried, and results today do not speak very.highly of it. And yet, when lhc suggestion is made with the object of placing the hospital on a straight business basis, hands go up and wc arc told it can't be done. Surely it could be tried. And if it did not succeed the failure could not be worse than that of the imbusiness-like policy of the past. Enderby has now a duly incorporated hospilal board, incorporated under the Hospital Acl of British Columbia. .As a hospital board it must have full charge of the hospital; il musl pay the nurse and assistants regular salaries, and must collect all hospital fees and account for their disbursement as provided by law. Heretofore the matter of. hospital fccs, receipts and expenditures, etc., have, been left to. thc nurse in. charge, who ran the hospital i'or the fees 'made. The city provided the hospilal building and furnishings, and paid thc water rate and taxes on the -property, while thc Okanagan Saw Mills, Ltd.,-\"furnished the lights, up to tlie closing of the hospital some lime ago. Last year the city paid out-on behalf of thc local hospital the sum or$438. In addition lo this the city paid $457.50 for the tubercular case sent from the city three or four years ago to thc provincial hospital at Kamloops. This $457.50 per year could as well have been given to the local hospilal all these vears if an isolation ward for Lb. patients had. been provided. Under the Hospital Acl, provision is made for deducting $1.00 per monlh froniVill men working in mills, factories, mines, lumber camps, etc. This is known as the hospilal fee, and its payment entitles each man tef medical and hospital care, in case of sickness. Usually this fee of 5-1.00 per man per monlh is. divided equally between llie attending physician and the hospilal. Occasionally the division ii. 25c to the .physician and 75c .to the hospital. In othcr cases thc physician runs .the hospital and takes> all the fes Of course, in this case lhc physician pays the salaries of hospilal nurse and assistants. With all thc money thai is paid as hospilal fees by the lumber camps and mills in this locality, there should nol bc any dillicully in keeping the local hospital running\". To be frank about it, however, Dr.. Keith has stated he cannot afford to spit these fees with the local hospital, and ha has declined to run the hospital. We do not wish* to make this discussion personal. But upon all these points must hinge the success of the local hospilal. And if \"we continue to ignore them 'there can bc no hope ever of keeping the hospilal open. Thc Hospital Act makes specific provision in regard to'hospital.'fees, and in addition to these _^cs paid by the men, the government also stands ready to pay $1 per day per patient toward the 4:ipkeep=oiMhe^hQspitaL^^^ kept and forwarded monthly-to the proper department. If is not the fault of the Government lhat this data has not been forwarded from Enderby and that wc arc therefore at this time not' favored wilh thc Government grant. The municipality of Salmon Arm pays the rent, and waler and 'light rales. At Armstrong lhe nurse runs her own hospilal. She gels a granl of $30 per month from the city and $25 per monlh from the municipality. For these grants she undertakes to give free'hospilal care lo any indigent patient sent in by lhc city or municipality, and out of thc grant given by the cily she pays her-hospilal waler and light rates, rent, w^xjy* etc. From these figures wc wish to draw a *^^@e9 lesson. Draw your own con- conclusion. Do you think- we are on the right track? On the Verge of Revolution? A profound shock is given to the most consevative country in the world by the flat statement of the London Times that- England is upon the verge of a revolution. That great organ of British opinion roundly .alleges that sinister influences have gained control of the trade unions and that the workers are blindly following a path which can only lead to revolution. It says: \"The. bulk.of the men do not understand whither they are being led. They do not know that persistence in the present course will jeopardize the successful issue of the war.
