Only three Cases were Pre, sented and None so far Tried 1 One Case Only is put Over Until [Next week Monday (Associated Press Despatches.) There were but three cases to come before the court when the assizes opened yesterday, with Chief Justice Hunter presiding. These cases were Rex vs. Southin, indecent assault, laid over from last assize; Rex. vs. Smith, indecent assault; Rex vs. Raines, theft. No hearings were held, no bill being found against Smith, and while a true bill was' found against Raines by the grand jury, the crown moved to stay proceedings, owing to a daw in the ease, and the prisoner was discharged. The case against South- in was not proceeded with owing to, the illness of the prosecutrix, Miss Alice Trumper, and the case was adjourned till Monday next. The following grand jury was sworn in shortly, after court opened at two o'clock yesterday: Jos. Dandle (foreman), Geo. A. Fletcher, J. Fanning, Alex.. Henderson,, J. F. Doyle, Fred. Wagfdaff, T. T. Shortly before twelve o'clock the clanging of the fire bell awakened those: who had retired for the night, and called the fire brigade to their duties. The Portland Hotel was going up in smoke. In a very short lime after the alarm was sounded Chief Smith bad his brigade at the scene of the fire, but it was fully a quarter of an hour before water could be brought into play on the burning building. Smoke was issuing in great volumes from the roof but no Hare Was seen until the moment the water was turn ed on, when the bar room suddenly became one mass of flames. In a few minutes under the mighty xow of water the flame in the.bar was extinguished and it was clpar to the by-standers that the brigade had tho fire well under control and the quantity of smoke issuing from various parts of the building became less and less: -At, one time the alarm that the fire had broken out in the kitchen was given and the hose was speedily taken through the passage and under the'influence of the steady stream of water fire in that apartment soon vanished. The firemen continued to pour a steady flow of water on the hotel, although the fire was apparently extinguished. A few articles of furniture were carried out but that left inside was badly'damaged bv water.
