Dr. Olivier of Creston, medical health officer; visited the Wynndel school last week. Mrs B. W Payne of Creston is a visitor at the home of Mr. and Mr.s J. G. Abbott. - \"- Members of Creston school board have had a couple of meetings within the past week at which most of the time was taken up with trying to get things squared away with the authorities at Victoria so. that the earliest possible start can .be made with the erection of Creston's new four-room public school. Since it was found the tenders originally submitted for the construction of the new building were so far in excess of the $15,500 available/ tbe plans have been redraftedand the two lowest tenderers, one of whom is Al. Hendren of Creston, . were asked to submit new bids on the revised plans, but the second tenders, while lower, are still .too high. The original bid of $18,320 was reduced to $17,666, and the other first bid of $17,985, was cut to $16,485. When these figures reached the board they wired the department, asking that Victoria make up the difference between the $15,500 available, and either one of the revised tenders. The Victoria reply wast at-no such consideration would be shown but suggested that some' further revision of the revised plans be made to get the cost down to the sum the trustees have voted to spend. Tuesday morning the beard wired Victoria that they were agreeable to this and urging that all possible speed be made to get in the third set of bids so that actual construction would not be, unnecessarily delayed.' At the re gular meeting of the board on Monday night, along with the new school building matters, the' trustees had before them the resignations of Miss M. Smith and O. A white-haired woman had just emerged from the station. -She wore a broad-brimmed black felt hat much like a man's, while her long black cape being unfastened, revealed a middy blouse of flaming ordered: \"Roast beef sandwiches, coffee, lemon meringue pie for three, please;- and take your time.\" Struck dumb by this breezy individual, Jack stifled a smile and gave his sister a disconcerting nudge. Their escort had flung her cape on a nearby hook, and was a noticeable figure in her broad felt - hat and scarlet middy. People looked at her, mildly amused; but there was nobility in her weatherbeaten countenance, and her smile was winning. Lunch was quickly served, and there being no privacy at the counter, was consumed in silence save for a few questions regarding their journey. As the train pulled away from the station, both boy and. girl turned to watch it, feeling a subtle, regretful twinge, as if some good friend were deserting them; and as Nance resumed her mO'al their companion asked: \"Sorry to see the train depart without you?'* \"I suppose I am.\" replied the girl, and added at this unexpected insight of her mood: \"You see, it makes me feel as if the last bridge behind us was burning. I don't think you'll find Columbine 1-Jelson hard to live with.\" \"Have you known her long?\" asked Jack, hoping to secure a bit of light on the character of their unseen relative. \"All my life. Do you suppose our Otto will have to go?\" Aurora's apt to get flustered in an emergency, but I never saw her so worked up.\" This brought a laugh; and Mark said dryly: \"I didn't know we'd ever had a christening in Pine Ridge, Miss Columbine. Too bad that party was interrupted by a war!\" \"It wasn't,\" retorted the old lady. \"I called back: 'Keep still, Aurora. I'm going to stop him.\" She signalled wildly, and a truck drew up beside them, though it seemed to Nancy that both vehicle and the driver did so with reluctance. The latter started to remove his hat, found he had none on, and blushed furiously. The truck emitted a sort of groan. \"If you reach home first, Matthew, just sit and wait till we get there,\" ordered Miss Columbine. '\"You can tell Aurora I said to give you a slice of chocolate cake. And this is as good a time as any to make you acquainted with my cousins, Nancy and Jack Nelson. I'll be careful, Miss Columbine.\" j He reached for his hat again, found it still naissing, blushed redder, and started the truck with such a jolt that empty milk cans careened drunkenly in the rear. Such confusion amused his brother, and a quiet laugh escaped from Nancy. She said: \"He's really bashful, isn't he?\" \"Born that way,\" responded Cousin Columbine. \"And so. good looking!\" observed Nance. A look over the district reveals the fact that 100 acres of strawberries are now in bearing at Wynndel. The British Sovereign is the most popular variety, with VanSans a close second. Raspberries, although only accounting for twenty acres will keep the berry pickers until at least the end of July. It is unfortunate that the 24 below * zero touch late in January damaged the canes and the outlook,-in consequence, is for only a 50 per cent, of normal crop. The growers are fortunate in that most of the plantings are to the well known Cuthbert variety. In a conversation with E.
