THE WASTE DUMP. (From Mining-Reporter.) Timberline in Colorado is 'between 11,000 and 12,000 feet above sea level, depending on the exposure of the mountain side. As a general rule, on the north side of a mountain, timber- line will be encountered at about 11,000 feet. On the south side of a mountain timberline creeps a little higher aiid is a trifle less than 12,000 feet. At least this has been our experience in most cases when testing by the aneroid. William Yolen Williams, formerly superintendent of the Granby-mines, is making a tour of Italy and having a pleasant time. Work was commenced Monday on the,Silver Cloud Fraction by Penny & Baker. The claim lies between the Bay and Silver Cloud. An option has been secured by local parties from Al. Sanderson on the Jack Pot in Wellington camp. Particulars will appear later. Ed. Hugh Wood returned this week from Beaverdell, bringing with him some splendid samples' of silver ore from the Sally, rnnning $500 to the ton. This ore was taken from a depth of 135 feet and tHc.lead .is \"between 30 and 40 inches wide. The Great Northern is now taking out about one thousand tons of ore per day to the Granby ismelter. When the two new furnaces are installed it is expected that the C. P. R. and the Great Northern Will each handle about 1,500 tons of ore a day. While all arrangements have* hot yet been made for the- bringing of power from Bonnington Falls lo the Boundary, it is understood that the matter is practically in shape, and that there will be no more shortage in power at the mines and \"smelters in this district. The annual assessment work has just been completed on the Morning Star, situated above the B.'C. Copper company's smelter. McDonald and adjoining, the Dynamo on the north, while plowing this spring uncovered a lead of chalcopyrite. Information received is to the effect that the ore looked as rich as the best samples from the Big Coppei shown in the early days. On the Mayflower, \u00EF\u00BF\u00BD\u00EF\u00BF\u00BDthe adjoining claim on the west and- owned by P. Hickey and O. Lofstad, this ore body is proved in the 20-foot shaft to be four feet between well-defined walls. The bond on the Mavis in Skylark camp, given by E. T. Wickwire to D. B. Mockrill on the 11th March, is for $15,000, wilh payments of $1,500 on the ist Sept., 1905, 13th Dec, 1905. the 13th March and June, 1906, and $3,000 on the 13th Dec, 1906, and 13th March, 1907. Work is to be commenced on the \"j.8t April aqd to continue during life of bond. In each two calendar month work must be done equal to the labor of one miner for 80 days, and in each month not less than the labor of one miner for 20 days. In all shipments of ore Mr. Wickwire is to receive Vl1/. per cent, of the net returns. There have been rumors innumerable during the past week that the Greenwood and Boundary Falls smelters are to be moved to Midway. On tracing the rumors to their source they were found to be only too true. Not only the smelters, but the daily hours of labor\u00EF\u00BF\u00BD\u00EF\u00BF\u00BD\u00EF\u00BF\u00BD-twelve\u00EF\u00BF\u00BD\u00EF\u00BF\u00BD\u00EF\u00BF\u00BDare to be moved. In an interview D. A. Bannerman stated that he would move , both smelters by dray Monday morning. The new combination smelter will get power from Bonnington Falls, and water from the Elk river in East Kooteuay. Unless rumors are roped and branded when young they are difficulty to identify. The smelters will have to move pretty lively to keep up with the rumors. James Cronin,-manager of the St. Eugene, War Eagle and Center Star companies, when asked about the compressor plant that is to be installed at the St. Eugene said: '\"We have ordered an, air compressor from the Jenckes Machine company. It will have a capacity of 3,000 feet of cubic air per minute, and will furnish power for 30 machine drills. It will be shipped from the manufacturers about June 20th, and will..- be installed in July, and we expect to have it running by August 1st. Watkin, two boys 14 and 15 years of age respectively, attempted to blow up the Phoenix school house with dynamite. Little damage was done to the building. Pascoe arrived in the citv Tuesday. He has been in the Yukon country for a couple of years, but believes the Boundary is as good as any of the mining sections of the West. The territory around Dawson is no longer a poor man's country, the principal output now being from hy-. draulicing. Mr. E. W. Bishop of Owen Sound, Ontario, is visiting his son, E. W. Bishow of Greenwood. Mr. Bishop' was one of the 'pioneer merchants of Owen Sound, having been in business in that town for upwards of thirty 3*ears. This is Mr. Bishop's first visit to the mining camps of the west, although he was for a number of years a resident of Manitoba. He will probably remain in this distiict about a a year. Jos. Devlin arrived m_the_city_last week from the north. Mr. Devlin was one of the original owners of the Minnie Healy at Butte, Mont., which he and his brother sold for nearly $100,000. Some years ago he came to this district and purchased W. J. Nelson's interest in the Black Diamond and Standard in Beaver camp, on the West Fork of Kettle river.
