F" Stow, a former club secretary, and for many years a member of the staff of the Bank of B. N. A. here, with a parting; gift, in token of the esteem in which he is held by his fellow club members and the business men of Greenwood, for his good fellowship and businesslike encouragement of everything local, for the past eleven years. In making the prer sentation James S. Birnie expressed the general regret of all at thc departure of Mr. Stow, who had become a landmark of Greenwood, and hoped that the future would bring much happiness to Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Stow in their new home-in Rossland. In his response, Mr. Stow stated that he had lived longer in Greenwood than in any other town in his life, and always considered it home; that he regretted breaking the old ties but hoped- that all his friends would call and see him in Rossland and renew the old comradeship. The after-presentation speeches of many of the club members are not recorded, but one and all had a good time and many a cheer raised the roof for the departing bank manager and his wife. The presentation took the form of a silver teapot, sugar basin and cream jug, and a tray of cut glasses. During the past week Mr. and Mrs. Stow were the recipients of several beautiful gifts, and a crowd of friends gathered on Monday to speed them on their way. GENERAL NOTES HARD LINES 1 ON DR. COOK The University of Copenhagen has found that Dr. Cook's papers fail to prove his claim that* he reached the North pole. . After .years of exploration, after hardships and privations in the farthest north, Dr. Cook is, repudiated by .most of the authorities on Northern exploration, such as Nan- sen, and even if the doctor did not actually,, stand ou^ the coveted spot where, all roads lead to the South, it is hard lines to have almost the whole world turn against him with the exception of a few faithful friends. Had he claimed to have gone within any reasonable distance of the pole no one would have doubted him, except Peary, who cannot believe anything good of the doctor, but he claimed no less than the pole itself. The world stands aghast ar the doctor's delusion and its discovery. 1 COAST NEWS THE LAST WEEK OF 1909 With- one week rn ire of the. closing year to ran it is interesting to remember what 1909 has d'M** f.ir Grenwoof|, VVe have seen the G~eenwn/|.Phoenix tunnel s'arted and work resinned there af'er wme tn mths delay. A JAPANESE TRAGEDY Now that King Leopold has gone to his final account with his maker, and the whole world has stopped cursing him, for a while, for his maladministration of the Gongo and its reign of rubber terror, it is interesting to note that this vast terrisory was offered to England by H. He shut tbe door of his cabin and, whistling to his dog, climbed tbe steep path where the wrinkled creeper flung its splash of scarlet and along the trull to the Knob, under the needled song of tbe redwoods. There in the dappled shade stood Jessica's rock statue, and. now it looked upon two mounds. The prodigal had returned at last, father and son rested side by side, and that, too, was well. The company owns the coal rights of 2,458 acres of land and has options on three square miles additional. Work has been done in development continuously since September 2, and a tunnel is now being driven to cross-cut three seams which show on the surface. Coal can be delivered from the mouth of this tunnel to the C. P. R. tracks below by gravity. Development work done thus far is as follows: One prospecting tunnel on the surface of the seam, 50 feet in length. One shaft and drifts, about 45 feet, all in the coal seam. One shaft and incline, following the proven seam to the depth of 80 feet. An analysis of the surface coal returns 66 per cent carbon and only 3 percent ash. The Company owns other properties, including fruit lands, mineral claims, options on mineral claims, mines and timber limits. Its coal holdings alone are considered worth more than its issued capital stock. An investment in this stock at the present price should be immensely produc, ive.
