The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power company are going to ttmuel the mountain from Boundary creek to Phoenix and are going to erect large smelting and refining works near the portal of th?. tunnel. In this issue of the Times is a notice from D. Whiteside, solicitor for the company, of an application which will be made to the legislature to enlarge the scope of the company's power to enable it to carry out the huge undertaking. The tunnel scheme is not a new one in Greenwood. It has been reported on by eminent engineers and its feasibility has never been doubted by those who inquired into the merits of the project. A large amount of capital will be required, and this was hot eas7 to secure until it was fully demonstrated that Phoenix ore could be treated at a profit. Now that thq Granby company has declared a dividend and announces that a similar dividend will be paid every three months it will be a much easier matter'to secure the required capital. A few years ago L. M. Rice, who was the engineer in charge of the construtcion'.'of the C. &'W. railway, took considerable interest iu the scheme. He stated that there were no insurmountable engineering difficulties in connection therewith. The great essential is suffi;ietil capital. That Jay P. Graves and his company can finance the scheme there is no reason to. doubt. The advantages to the Granby company when the tunnel is completed ia simply incalculable. Thecompany Iuh demonstrated that it can mine ana treat ore at a profit when its output if, less than 2000 tons a day. Its profit will be much larger when tha'. output is doubled or trebled. Today the company is paying transportation rates for hauling its ore about 25 miles to tlie smelterat-Grand^Forksr^-Th rough am tunnel the ore can'reach a smelter site in less than three miles. The saving in transportation charges alone will, if the output is 5000 tons daily, amount to S1000 a day. Although no announcement was made by the company there was a strong suspicion that such a project was being considered by the company. For some months the Granby company has beeu purchasing claims above ami ambiguous to the proposed route oi the tunnel. It will in all probability be started at a point on ICholt creek above Hall's ranch, about four mile- above Greenwood, and run in a dirccf line to the Grauby mines at Phoenix. The length of the tunnel will be less than two miles, possibly not more than 2000 yards. The system of open quarries is the cheapest method of mining in the world, but the system can apply only to what might lie termed surface ore. When the quarries attain depth the expense of hoisting" the ore must be taken into consideration. The Granby company has an enormous tonnage which can be mined bj' quarrying, but the only practical method of deep mining without expensive hoisting- is by a tunnel through which the' ore can be cheaply handled and hauled to the smelter. The Granby management is nothing if not practical. The cost of the tunnel will be large, but not beyond the limit of a fifteen million dollar company which has already demonstrated- that its mines can be operated at a profit. The tunnel scheme only confirms the pretty well recognized fact that Greenwood is the centre <>f the Boundary. The ores naturally gravitate to Boundary creek and it is the natural smelter center of the district. When the tunnel becomes an established "lTictTTT"Fenwood~wiireasiry:be~tKe largest city in the interior.- HIS FIRST TALK Liberal leader Macdonald made his maiden speech in the provincial house Monday and created a. remarkably good impression. His manner throughout was marked by more reserve than is usuala reserve which is accounted for by the dual reasons of his own modesty and his inexperience. He spoke briefly, adopting a cautious line of offering his criticisms, without advancing many suggestions, notwithstanding several anxious attempts by McBride and others to draw him out. lie sharply criticized McBride's retention of the two per cent tax, notwithstanding Conservative promises of its repeal. He also confessed to distrust of the administration because of its small majorit}- and took the premier sharply to task- re the Fernie matter. The government, he said, has readily recognized the necessity ior a means of access and transportation to Dawson from the coast which shall be free from United States influence or domination. PLATINUM Iridium and Other Exceedingly Rare Metals May Be Saved Mine owners of Rossland and the Burn tBasin'districtare trying-to ~ save" the rare metals. The complex ores of Rossland district carry values in molybdenum, platinum, iridum, osium and one or two other exceedingly rare and valuable metals. Heretofore these values have been thrown away as no smelters within reach were capable ot handling tbe ore so as to save the metal-... Recently the matter has been receiving considerable attention. The Giant company is the first Rossland corporation to take hold of the problem seriously. Ferdinand Dietzsch. an Associate of the Royal School of Mines, has been employed to give the matter careful study and see what can be done. Two tons of Giant ore will be shipped lo him iu London, where experiments will be made during the winter. Mr. Dietzsch is recognised as an authority on the treatment of complex ores. Another mine on which an effort ivill be made lo save the rarer metals is the Contact, iu Burnt Basin, a section of the Rossland camp. A number of tests conducted in England to date have satisfied the management of the mines that platinum exists in the ore in commercial quantities, the results secured to date indicating an average of a quarter of an ounce of platinum per ton of crude ore. Within the platinum are iridium and osium, rarer metals, and it is hoped tint a system of treatment at the mine can be devised whereby these precious metals can be utilized. The Contact possesses a strong lead of ore running 510 to SIS in gold and silver and is a valuable concentrating proposition, irrespective of the presence iu the ore of the platinum metals. The Grand Forks smelter and converter plant will ho continued as there will be sullidcnl ore from the glory holes to keep these plants running. But the greatercjuiput will come through the tunnel.
