Godenrath returned to from the Similkameen district on Monday last and left for Spokane to be absent about 10 days. Speaking of the trip he said : "It is nearly a year since I was last in the Similkameen and during that period much has been done to demonstrate the fact that valuable seams ot coal underlay what is described as the Princeton eoal basin. This basin, according- to William Black- more M. E., who is consulting engineer for the Ashnola Coal Company, is roughly nine miles in length by from seven to eight miles in width. It contains both lignitic and bituminous seams of coal. During the summer three different companies have been exploiting the coal, measures at depth by the aid of bore drills. The Ashnola Coal Company's drill was sunk to a depth of 1,000 feet, on landJadjoining the Vermilion .Forks Mining & Development Company. At a depth of 700 feet the drill passed through a six foot seam which is believed to be- bituminous. With a six inch shale parting, a second seam was encountered four feet in thickness, making practically a ten foot-seam, i These are the'upper seams in a series which consists of three zones and it is estimated that the whole of the coal bearing strata will be passed through at a depth of 1,500 feet. This fully demonstrates the predictions made by Mr. Blackmore, last fall, and also establishes the fact that whether or not coking coal is found, the coal will make a high grade steam and domestic fuel "From Mn Earnest Waterman, manager of the Vermilion Forks Mining & Devetapment Company, an English company, I received considerable data, regardjng^J:he_i_operation1--of^his--,:Coni-. pany's bore-drilling. This company has two coal leases one for 312 acres, immediately adjoining the townsite of Princeton and another for 640 acres. The bore operations have been confined to the townsite, and two holes have been sunk respectively 280 and 303 feet, and a third is being put down. On the lirst, at a depth of seventy feet a seam 18 feet five and one half inches was passed through, as also two other seama four and six feet in thickness. Below the larger seam no other coal was struck. In the second hole at a depth of 202 feet a five foot seam was passed through. The third hole at the time I left Princeton was down 110 feet and in sandstone. The analysis of the sample of coal taken fram the second showed 47 per cent carbon, and when one considers that the coal is more or less mixed in with the sandstone drillings the per centage is good. Samplings ofthe coal taken fpom the pit1 give as high as S3 per cent carbon. In fact it is a high grade steam and domestic coal. The third drill was in charge of Alexander Sharp, M. E., representing the Holt syndicate. Absolutely no information was obtainable in camp re. garding what was encountered, beyond the fact that several seams of coal were penetrated;' The information I obtained, while not authentic, stated that the bore was sunk 823 feet. Certain it is that Mr. Sharpe expressed himself as pleased with the results obtained, "The Osoyoos & Similkameen Coal & Exploration Company which I represent has acquired 10 coal claims, in different sections of the basin. After title has been obtained the ground will be surveyed. We have some splendid showings of coal." Will be Represented in all Important Departments* World's Fair, St. Lotus, Oct., 20 President Francis has assigned to Canada a commanding site for its building at the World's Fair. ' It will be near the Administration Building and near one of the main entrances. Mr. William Hutchinson, the Canadian Com- miisioner accompanied by W. H. Hay, chief decorator and superintendent of installation, has been here to receive the allotment. The Dominion will not only have a special pavilion of its own, but will also be represented in the principal departments. The exhibits from that country will be representative of agriculture, horticulture, mines and minerals, forestry, livestock and manufactures. Canada's pavilion will be a rendezvous for Canadian, visitors, and will be tastefully decorated of trophies made up of fruits, cereals and ' grasses. While in the.city Commissioner Hutchinson conferred with President Francis and other officials of the Exposition, He will now make estimates of the pace required in the exhibit buildings. The commissioner has available for his purposes about $125,000, and he has also the machinery of an established and permanent exposition bureau which forms a part of the department of agriculture. Il IMG How the Day Was Spent in Greenwood. II Delightful at Home Given by Local Oddfellows. Mining Notes. A rate of $2.50 a ton has been made by the Kettle Valley lines for trial shipments of ore from the Republic mines to the smelters at Trail and Nelson. Immense deposits of high grade iron ore have been discovered . in the Cascade mountains in the state of Washington by prospectors from Everett. Blessing" of the Bell. Interesting Service in Sacred Heart. Mining in Surnpter, Ore., is enjoying a mild boom caused by a rich discovery having lately been made on the Cracker-Oregon properties. C. W. H. Sansora will start work in a few days upon the Gold Finch. This property was bonded and leased a few months ago by Jas, Sutherland and Phil McDonald of Greenwood and several cars of high grade ore were extracted arid shipped to the Trail smelter, netting the operators a handsome profit. . Now _ihaLJMr._-jSa.nsp.nr has got the property back in his own hands he will do some mining on his own account. Several large nuggets have been picked up on Dragon Creek about 15 miles from Barkerville. One of the nuggets was worth $110. The property is owned and operated by Tacoma capitalists. A trial shipn.ent of 165 tons of ore from the Iron Mask mine at Kamloops to a Boundary smelter yielded a net profit of $20.00 per ton. It is announced that a new company has been formed for the purpose of acquiring the Rathmullen group in Summit camp. The Cariboo Gold Mining company of Camp McKinney will declare a dividend of two and a half per cent on the capital stock next month. Sloean Star Fatality. Do you use Blue Ribbon Tea ? L. White & Co. New O. I, C, Store. Thanksgiving Day was generally observed in Greenwood. All places of business were closed and many took advantage of the glorious weather to spend a day in the open air. In the afternoon a shooting tournament was held at the athletic grounds. There was a large attendance of spectators, who thoroughly enjoyed the efforts made to hit the bull'seye. In fact it appeared as if some of the contestants were shooting under a misapprehension. They evidently considered that the object of the contest was to avoid piercing the bit of canvas placed against the hill. From this point of view they succeeded admirably. On the other hand, some exceptional scores were made, when it is considered that it was the first shoot ever held in Greenwood, and that the rifles were of every age and make. There were two contests, both 200 yards. In the first each contestant was given five trials, the possible score being 25. There were twenty entries. W. Hi Webb and G. E. Richardson tied for first place with a score of 17. * The first six were as follows : -;"**' W.H. In the second contest the contestants had three shots, with a possible score of 15. A. Wilmot was the victor, the highest scores following : A. Wilmot 11 ^^^GrEjRichardson"trr*?;:^r:t:":::::10 *" ~"~ A. Logan 9 J. G. Martin 9 A. D. Hallett 8 F. W. McLaine .....8 J. R. Porter 8 The most exciting contest was that between W. M. Law and J. L. White. It was decided that they shoot until one or the other hit the target, when the fortunate one should be declared the victor. After several rounds of ammunition had been used, the scorer announced that Mr. Law was the better shot, a3 he had succeeded in making an outer. Mr. White states that he has evidence that the scorer had become tired and that he made this announcement simply to end the contest. It is likely that this charge against the scorer will be investigated further. Those taking part thoroughly enjoyed the outing, and judging by the large number of entries and the interest shown by the spectators, there is no good reason* why a strong rifle association should not be organized here. In the evening the Oddfellows were at home in their comfortable lodge room'to about one hundred members and their friends. Cards and various other games were played, an interesting programme of songs, music and speeches was carried out, and tasty refreshments served. Everyone was made to feel at home and the committee in charge, Messrs. Holmes, Mortimer and McKenzie, were congratulated on all sides for the success of the affair. At the various homes the day was quietly spent. Mrs. Caulfield gave an afternoon at her cosy residence on Kimberley avenue, which was attended by a large number of ladies. Turkeys and other good things were plentiful at homes and hotels. While there is no boom in Greenwood, it is something to be thankful for that there is no distress, but that all have plenty. Mr. Sidley himself has tons of grain, bnt he is in the same predicament as other farmers in that vicinitywithout a market. They are anxiously awaiting the advent of a railway, when the Anarchist Mountain district will become one of the most important agricultural sections of the province.' The acreage is there, the soil is rich and seemingly inexhaustible, and the climate perfect. In the meantime the farmers are feeding the most of the grain, and selling cattle and hogs. Mr. Sidley's name has been connected with the alleged jumping of the Waterloo claim in Camp McKinney. The facts are that Mr. Bennett, who re-staked the Waterloo, held a claim near the Waterloo in conjunction 'with- Mr. Sidley. This claiin rati out, and Bennett re-located at midnight in another's name. At three o'clock the following morning the then foreman of the Waterloo jumped Bennett's claim and adversed his record. He went to Mr. Sidley for advice, and as the latter is a Justice of the Peace and well versed in the mining law, he pointed out that as. the Waterloo company had allowed its free miner's license to lapse, the Waterloo claim was vacant and open for re-location. Bennett promptly relocated the claim, and now negotiations are underwayjfpr a cessation of hostilities. The Clarendon after being renovated and refitted throughout has been reop ened with Fred. This state of affairs he of course Jays to the non-completion of the West Fork wagon road, as all the properties in the district upon which development work has been done are looking well, and several of them are in a position to begin shipments as soon as there are any transportation facilities to the Boundary reduction works. They report the fruit and stock exhibit as good but the other exhibits were far below their expectations. The racing was pronounced first- class. W. A. Clark, Jr. of Montana had a fine string of horses at the park. Financially the exhibition has been a succoss and as an annual affair is welcomed by the people of the mining towns of British Columbia as an '. opportunity of taking a short vaca-j tion in the outer and larger world. As the bass had already been removed from the Government ponds near Belleville, and all arrangements made for their shipment -west'before the can- ners' complaint was received, it was decided to.place the.fish in the lakes in Alberta lying- between Calgary and Edmonton. The special car conveying the black bass will leave Ottawa today for Calgary. The above despatch will not prove interesting reading to the people of the interior. After long and continued effort they succeeded in arranging with the Department of Marine and Fisheries for the transplanting of black bass to some of the interior lakes. As these lakes find an outlet iii the Columbia river, and as the salmon in the Columbia do not rise above the Dalles, it is difficult to understand why the salmon can tiers interfered. The stocking of* these interior lakes would not have interfered with their business in anyway. In any case they should not, like the coal baron of Pennsylvania, have assumed that they are possessed of divine rights and every whim of theirs must be obeyed. It is said that black bass "are voracious, but in this respect they are not in it with the salmon canners. .The people of Greenwood aud Cascade went to considerable expense in arranging- for the shipment; They sent men to Revelstoke to meet the fish and all are greatly disappointed. The department we think exercised undue haste in listening to the complaints of people, who were not interested in the matter. .As was stated it is difficult to understand why B. C. canners should be so anxious about black bass who if they started seaward would reach the ocean only by the way of Astoria, Ore. Newspapers have a nasty habit of never reaching the persons to whom they are addressed. It is difficult to say where the fault lies. A number of reasons could be suggested but the indignant subscriber in nearly every instance blames the poor publishers. Every week brings one or more protests. The language is sometimes moderatesometimes it isn't. It is not often however that we are blessed with an effusion similar to that received from an esteemed subscriber in Liverpool, England. The mail service must have been treating him in a shameful way before he could be induced to pen the following to the 'editor of the Times : Dear StR : Reading the cheerful and seductive remarks burst upon an admiring world from your Editor's Easy Chair on the'Sth of September, we feel that what has at long been a profound mystery to us has at last come to the light of day, as in one of the "big commercial centres of Great Britain" it has puzzled us to account for its non-appearance on many occasions during the year. Now we understand that our copy is some- ttmes borrowed (and not returned) and sometimes stolen by an admiring but uuder-.-icrupulous non-subscribing public. As "we greatly appreciate the news, the wit, and the humor, of your honored publication we should rejoice greatly if all the inhabitants of the Boundary district would become subscribers to the Green-wood Times, so By a curious anomaly governments by their passivity ignore the very functions for which they exist. A concrete illustration is the failure of the Dunsmttir administration to the reserve on certain government lands in the Boundary district, thus retarding, or more strictly speaking, obstructing the development ' of vast resources only' awaiting the application of capital and labor to be converted into tangible wealth. Some years ago this entire district was blanketed with an official reserve iu order to enable the C. P. R. to select land it was entitled to under a clause in the charter of the Columbia & Western railway. The C. P. E. having made its selections, and the balance remaiuing vested in the government no reason exists why this governmental interdiction should not be abolished with all possible speed. IRElBIfflS Some Interesting Civil Suits Will Be Tried. In that learned, legal language, which is always so unique and expensive, a sitting of the Supreme Court as a Court of jjAssize, Nisi Prius, Oyer and Terminer, and general gaol delivery, will be held in 'Greenwood on the 27th inst. Owing to the criminal cases originating in this district having been tried at Nelson, there will be none- here unless some citizen is good enough to take the rather unusual proceeding of seriously offending the law. It has not vet been announced who is coming here to preside, but as the Chief Justice is taking the interior circuit, it is likely he will decide to Cyme in here. There will be some interesting civil suits. Among thee will be that of the Greenwood EUctric Company, Ltd.. vs. t|ie Waterous Engine Company, Ltd., for damages for breach of war- :raiity.iof-.-.aii.i engine. -^-The--plaintiffs allege that a McEwen Simple Engine 18x18, purchased by Duncan Mcintosh as trustee, for them in November of 1899 and received in the following January, was not properly . constructed, was defective mechanically, and consequently was not first class machinery according to wairanty. They accordingly claim (a) cost of removing defective parts of engine and replacing same with properly constructed machinery, f.945, and (b) for loss of fuel caused by said defective construction, 438 tons per annum, or in two years and a half 1,095 tons at S5.6S per ton $6,186.75 ; total $7,131.75. Defendants deny warranty as alleged or otherwise, or that plaintiffs have suffered alleged or any damage by reason of any act or fault of defendants, and make counter claim for S341.75 for repairs made on two occasions to engine at plaintiff's request. Another action pending, one, however, that in the absence of the defendant from the province is not likely to come . before the court just yet, is that of S. F. Parrish vs. R. Wallace Jakes, to obtain specific performance of an agreement re a one-half interest in the Bell mineral claim. This claim is reported to be one of the most promising of a number situate on Wallace mountain, near Beaverdell, West Fork of Kettle river. The half interest that is the cause of this action was. a couple of years ago, willed to Dr. Jakes by Alex. Wallace, an old time prospector in the Boundary, who died in Dr. Jakes' hospital about the time mentioned. This interest was sold to Mr. Parrish, who requires completion of the transaction.
