A petition was circulated and received the signature of all firms save one. This has delayed putting- the half holiday into effect. There is a general desire for a half day's recreation- At present those employed indoors have only Sunday as a day of recreation with the result that Sunday afternoon is spent by many iu the pursuit of base ball and other athletic sports. This is objectionable even to many who participate in these games but in the absence of a half holiday no othes time can be found for necessary recrealion. During the summer months there is a feeling that there would be no loss-of business by reason of closing one afternoon each week. THE BOUNDARY CREEK TIMES. In addition to the timber, the company will get a twenty thousand horse power fall on Maple Creek, -where there is a 45-ft. fall. The deal will mean the expenditure of a million dollars, of which $350,000 will be spent in connection with harnessing the water power and starting the mills. Under, the terms of agreement the company will start work before September 15, and the whole works must be completed and in operation before 1904. A cruiser has been up the coast laud finds that all the timber can be obtained a mile from shore, there being over 300 miles of coast line on Quatsino Sound. The timber will be hauled out by cable to the coast. Cruisers who have been along the coast, find spruce all along streams, unlimited quantities of balsam and hemlock on the higher ridges, and cedar in the low lying places. The lease is for 21 years, and open to renewal. The Victorians who are selling hold forty per cent, of the.stock. No shares will be placed on the market, as the company has funds to proceed. Markets will be obtained in Japan, China and Australia. At first the ca pacity will be 75 tons daily, and the ultimata capacity will be 150 tons. Henry Hewitt is at the head of the Steel Co. He has pulp mills at Everett, but the supply of timber for pulp has so deteriorated that only a. third-class article can now be produced. At Quatsino the very finest article can be made as the quality of the timber there is excellent." It is gratifying to learn that foreign capital intends building up a new and important industry in this province. The new regulation introduced by General Manager Tonkin at the Coal Creek Mines did not effect the men at Michel, but sympathy for the Fernie Miners introduced them to go oul. Brieflly the history of the Michel strike was as follows : On Saturday, June 31st, the secretary of the union received a communication from the Fernie union requesting that they call - out the menin the mines there, and at a meetiug held Saturnay evening it was decided to . grant the request and the men "were accordingly called out. The membership of the union at ! In j conversation: with: a '.'News-Advertiser" representative, Mr. Miner stated that lie* was en route to Victoria, but would return to Vancouver later iu the week, and leave for Grand -Forks, tor-visit the smelter, probably on Thursday. The attention of ,Mr.. Commenting: upon this, Mr. Miner stated; that although he did not know the exact local conditions at thesinelter npt having been to Grand Forks yet on his present trip, it was correct, however, that the third furnace had been re^startedi aud'-t'iiat-'th'e company would as/it always Wad ^'endeavor' to-jju on prosecuting its work, irrespective of externalj-t^oubles," -as. far-as. it possibly could. As the matter really -stood, -the smelter needed some 11 .cars, or over 200 tons of coke daily^. to .enable it to be operated to its full capacity. At the present time a refinery was more needed than a smelter. The matter was in abeyance, but that was all. It would be in the interests of the Province, as a whole, to have a refinery established and to enable the Province and those interested in it to derive the most benefit from it, it should be established at a seaport.
